Who is as popular as the Beatles 50 years later (other than Elvis)?

Ugh. Off the top of my sleepy caffeine deprived head this morning :

Beach Boys (Rock n' Roll)
Frank Sinatra (Crooner)
Pink Floyd (Progressive Rock)
Iron Maiden (Heavy Metal)
Rolling Stones (Rock/Hard Rock)
Jimi Hendrix (Psychadelic Rock)
Nat King Cole (Crooner)
Charles Aznavour (Crooner)
Ozzy Osbourne (Heavy Metal)
B.B. King (Blues)
Ray Charles (Soul)

Seriously, I didn't even try and I'm not into any of those genres except for Heavy Metal (I'm a big metal head).

Again, stick to your Pop sphere guys, it's the dumps of music.

Agreed. Only one match.

That's not surprising given the Beatles probably didn't know at what time of the day a computer company in the future might hold an event, and probably didn't know what time zones said computer company might want to show on the front page of their website. For them to actually match up, they'd have to have the announcement at 3:43 (or 8:17) or something, and given the minutes would have to match up even if the hours don't (by virtue of time zones), there's no place on the planet that anyone could ever make that image work.

So, to summarize, that "only one match" logic doesn't make any sense.

George Harrison isn't around anymore to block it's release though his widow Olivia, Yoko and Ringo would have to agree to it. Macca wanted it on the Anthology compilations.

Harrison really didn't like it, describing it as 'avant garde a clue'. :D

Haha yeah I've heard that story :p Wonder if Olivia and Yoko would mind? I have a hard time imagining that. They should get as much out as possible even if it's not that good it's still unreleased Beatles material.

There's probably a load of jazz musicians...

Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath weren't around 50 years ago and you're having a laugh with Iron Maiden.

I'd try next time. :p

Did its job if over-hyped

The best any marketer can do is to have a product hyped up.

Once announcement is done, we wait for the next product release.
Nothing man-made satisfies completely. We will get bored and look for something else.

Prepare for buyers remorse.

Yes, but I'm completely Jazz ignorant. Don't forget country.

Then you've got the likes of John Cage and Philip Glass for your modern classical types

I didn't want to bring him down as he seemed to be on a roll...
:)

and Pink Floyd have been around 47 (ish years in one form or another), so that's close enough...

Bands from the 60s. Don't worry, we'll talk about them still in 5 years.

I forgot The Doors. Jim Morrison is quite the icon himself.

And seriously, don't diss Maiden. Ever. At least they are still active and making Albums, and they made quite a comeback with Brave New World and Dance of Death, though their last 2 are a bit a return to the lackluster post-Dickinson era.

But yeah, Maiden is more in their 30s than close to their 50s.

Move the goalposts why don't you?

You've got to wait another 15 years for Iron Maiden. :p

At least Ozzy was a Beatles fan. :D

What a complete letdown this announcement is going to be in relation to the teaser they made.

WGAS about The Beatles?

Those Beatles haters and peeps who think they are just an overrated pop band, go to ultimate-guitar.com and look at the Beatles chord progressions from Sgt Peppers on. Now compare to any of the other bands mentioned in this thread. Now compare the different textures, colors, and instruments they used. If you play an instrument try playing through the Album Sgt. Peppers. I am not sure if I would call them geniuses but collectively with George Martin they were certainly revolutionary and extra ordinary.

But as far as this announcement, who cares, any fan already has the music.

This would be so stupid if it we're true.
And I actually thought using the different clocks on the website was very useful.

No, this is more important than mere hype. It introduces, and will continue introducing, the entire Beatles catalog to generations who already have, or will, grow up without physical media of any kind for their music. Kids in general don't buy CDs today. They download. Sometimes for free, and if it's not available for purchase, definitely for free. But unless their parents, parents of certain generations, are into music, they'll not likely just trip across the Beatles unless the catalog is promoted by and available through a legitimate music download service.

I know everyone on MR wants cloud-based iTunes, or a subscription service announced alongside the immediate availability of iOS 4.2, but in the greater sense of the music-consuming market, especially the youth demographic, if this is "just" a Beatles announcement* this IS very important.

*It is a Beatles announcement. There's a Paul and Linda McCartney written song, Another Day, with the refrain: "It's just another day."

This HAS to be an "oh and one more thing..." dealie.

There can't be this much hoopla over a group that no one under 40 cares about and if they do, THEY ALREADY HAVE THE MUSIC!

I know this is SJ's pet project but nobody else cares. I mean really.

OK, no more griping until 10:10. :D

I bet half the bands you love, and their members are certainly under 40, will claim the Beatles as a moderate to major influence.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

The clocks look a lot more like the cover of "Abbey Road"--John (which it makes sense to be represented by "Tokyo") in front, standing straight up, the rest following. Compare the two, the hands seem to match--or, at least, they seem to match better than they do with "Help!".
