The crazy thing here in the UK is that O2 actually had to implement EDGE just for the iphone, and sacrifice the progression their 3G network for it. Well, at least it appears they've sacrificed it as all the other big players are offering HSDPA USB modems and other multi-megabit services.

(quoting mossberg) mobile data isnt that quick

Odd statement that.. I easily get 2Mb/sec (of 3.6Mb/sec max) out of mine on '3' and with the vodaphone ones at 7.2mb/sec I could probably triple that (not paying their rates though...)

An iphone with a 2Mb/sec would be cool imo :p Probably wouldn't bother with wifi once that was working.

No matter how bad the US 3G network is I can't imagine it being so bad that 3G wasn't a win.

Question - Many folks point to the fact that nobody can find an FCC filing for a 3G iPhone as proof it is not yet ready. If Apple releases it first in a foreign country, do they need FCC approval?

I don't think Apple would release a mobile product that can be used everywhere, except the US.

Besides... 60 days... a lot of time for the FCC to test the new iPhone. Who knows... SJ could just introduce the 3G iPhone at the WWDC, but then announces that it will be in stores next month or so.

That's a good point. HSDPA or no deal. Then again, it would take more that 3G for me to buy. As long as Apple doesnt just put 3G in there then its probably good. If all apple does is put 3G and doesn't put a better camera, better screen, or processor, or GPS or SOMETHING that isnt software related, then its no deal for me. Although screen and processor wouldnt make me buy it either without a camera and some other nice boosts in some department. Although i will probably buy this at some point. It would be great if Apple somehow convinced AT&T to allow people to buy this new iPhone without having to get a new 2 year contract. Or atleast just allow to pay for the phone and not breaking the contract early. Just some thoughts.

Yeah, i'm looking at any two of the following and I will upgrade:

32GB
HSDPA
5 megapixel+

Very good video overall. I couldn't care less about the iPhone part (okay, I actually could), but if the other stuff he talks about (broadband, tv) comes to life soon I'd be very excited.

I'm pretty sure upgrading your iPhone would not extend your contract. And I'm almost 100% sure that buying a new phone wouldn't break your contract. There were a few people who upgraded from the 8gb to 16gb iPhone with no hassles, and I broke my iPhone and got a new one without any hassle either.

I don't know about that. The way he says "the iPhone will be 3G in 60 days" sounds like a 3G iPhone will be purchasable in 60 days.

Wonder if they'll make this a global thing and not US first-and-only for a while since 3G networks are much more developed in Europe.

There is no way Apple would release a new version of the iphone in other countries before the US - it's its major market. Selling it in other countries first would simply mean that ninety percent of your iphone sales would tank while they waited for the new sexy to become available in the US.

I am also thinking that it won't be released at WWDC. It is a developers' conference. While I am sure there will be streams devoted to iphone SDK and its use, if the iphone is released at WWDC it will completely dominate proceedings, distracting from other things you might want to introduce. An obvious example would be an overview of what will be in 10.6. Hardware wise, a new laptop for the geeks would be more likely.

The iphone is big enough to deserve a separate event, say a couple of weeks before WWDC, to address the FCC hurdle and allow the iphone to be released on June 29.

Agree. I care about 3G for the iPhone. But what Mossberg said about the poor state of most home user's broadband connections effects me even more.

Out of curiosity, how much would the 3G iPhone be able to get (speed-wise) from a WiFi hot spot? Does it depend on the Access Point itself?

Im hoping it'll be as soon possible to be released. Apparently the iPhone will be released in Australia when the first official Apple Story opens June-July. I would hate Apple if they brought out the 2.5G iPhone in Australia, while the US has the 3rd Gen =(

I think the short supply of the current iPhone is neither a coincidence nor a underestimation of demand.
Apple says they underestimated the demand.

Well, what were they supposed to say in order to stick to the truth?
"Hey! We've got a new iPhone in a few weeks!" or "No comment!".

By doing it like they did they gonna keep up demand up until the new iPhone hits the market.
Makes perfect business sense, huh?

Walt Mossberg said, that the 3G iPhone will be [available?!] within 60 days.

Apple can announce a hardware upgrade without any keynote, can't they?
Think about it!
It is just a hardware upgrade. Apple is all about Software.

"Hey guys! We've got 32Gigs of memory and 3G connectivity. That's it."

Wow, that would be an incredible announcement on a keynote, right? *irony*

What about this:
They release new hardware in April or May and roll out the App Store alongside the 2.0 firmware at WWDC 2008.

Finally, it does not make any sense that the iPhone already is on short supply if Apple is not gonna roll out a new hardware revision before June.

We will see a very suprising launch of new hardware in the next few weeks.
That's my personal opinion!
Sorry for my bad english. I'm from Germany. ;)

3G for the iPhone

I don't think 3G for the iphone is going to improve things much. I know there is a big hype about this but all its going to do is maybe allow some apps to run without wi-fi. So I guess I don't have to find a wi-fi spot to download a song now. The biggest change is obviously going to be the applications for the iphone, and of course you know they will remodel the thing to make it seem like a different phone. If 3G is going to be the only change to the phone then I think I can hold off. But I have a feeling when steve jobs presents this at WWDC I'll feel the need to have it because he is one hell of a sales man.:)

3G coming soon? 60 days? Wow this is news (serious sarcasm)! 60 days would put us in June correct? Though I'll most likely get a 3G iPhone, I think its more interesting to see what AT&T and Apple will do now that AT&T has the 700MHz spectrum. Its clear that AT&T is going to be the premier wireless carrier for the unforeseen future. Now lets see when 4G is available. That's going to be news.

The 3G iPhone will not only be HSDPA but HSUPA. (With faster upload speed)

Because all at&t's 3G markets will be HSUPA by mid-year. There is no way Apple wanna settle for less.

AT&T Nears HSPA
By Brad Smith
WirelessWeek - April 02, 2008

LAS VEGAS—AT&T will have all of its 3G markets enabled with the high speed uplink capabilities by the middle of the year, according to Hank Kafka, vice president of network architecture for the operator.

AT&T had 255 major metropolitan markets with W-CDMA/HSDPA at the end of 2007 and continues to add markets. Kafka said at a GSM Association roundtable on HSPA that AT&T expects to cover 350 markets with 3G by the end of 2008, including all of the top 100 markets.

The operator started installing HSUPA last year and now is in the process of rolling it out, he said. By mid-year, he said all of its 3G markets will have HSUPA. He says typical data rates on the downlink now are between 600-to-1400 Kbps with a peak of 3.6 Mbps, while the uplink typically is 500-to-800 Kbps.

There are upgrades for HSPA which take it as high as 14.4 Mbps and Kafka says AT&T is studying those. But he declined to say when or if AT&T will raise its data rates to those levels.
Kafka also said AT&T has seen significant data usage increases for customers using 3G.

Off topic, but it annoys me!

Why are we seeing one of the most prominent tech writers/commenters of the modern age misusing the english language in such a way!?

The following are not quotes, merely examples

"I COULD NOT care less" = I care so little about this particular thing that there is no way that i could care less.

"They/he/I/we COULDN'T care less" = They/he/I/we care so little about this particular thing that there is no way that they/he/I/we could care less.

"They/he/I/we COULD care less" = With reference to thing that is currently under discussion, They/he/I/we could care less...... In other words, They/he/I/we care a little..."

It is probably a small matter to most but it really gets me......

The point of the matter is, is that everyone misuses the English language. Is it ashame? Yes. Do I do it? All the time. I know the point your trying to make is that because he's such a prominent person, and yes, i agree, but the fact of the matter is, is that the English language changes so much and very few people knew the "correct" way of speaking it from the start, that if that bothers you...well...yeah.

The 'could care less' thing doesn't make sense , it's true.

I noticed that too! I think it is very sad and it really annoys me. Now I AM NOT PERFECT, but I try and it scares me that people are not intelligent enough to simply comprehend the meaning of what they are saying. I think some people just give in because they are lazy or because everyone just says it wrong anyway, but that is sad as well.

The real point is that it is no secret that Americans are becoming illiterate and have absolutely slaughtered the English language. Read some classical eloquent old English and then listen to how teens talk today. Their vocabulary is pathetically limited and morphed into an internet slang crude language because they lack the ability to properly express themselves. I don't mean to get off topic either, but it makes me fear for our future generations in such a high tech and intelligent world with vast competition.

Other annoying things people butcher all the time:
FERmiliar, anywayS...

The US really does need to catch up. We are losing all jobs but high tech ones pretty much, and yet we are so far behind in the world in our own tech. Time to get on the bag America!

Yeah, i'm looking at any two of the following and I will upgrade:

32GB
HSDPA
5 megapixel+

Yeah. 5+ MP would be great. I just took over 400 pictures with my phone today. Easy to do. I would LOVE for a better MP CAMERA.

True. But that wasn't really a new phone. Not the way I see it. Still good to keep that in mind though.

Actaully I read that ATT is expanding there network quite a bit so it
Shouldn't be bad.

at&t is very aggressive expanding 3G this year indeed. Most people will be quite happy with 3G coverage when they get their 3G iPhone.:)

I don't think Mossberg's comment sets anything in stone. We have an iPhone-heavy event coming up in early June and that AT&T exec just said we'll see a 3G iPhone "in months." Mossberg could just be taking these two points and coming up with 60 days. I don't think it's anything to bet the farm over.

Though, he's surely correct. 3G has been no secret since the 2007 Macworld keynote...Steve himself said 3G iPhones would be coming. Why not by the time WWDC rolls around?

I hope we get new hardware before June though. One: WWDC should focus on the SDK, not new hardware; and (most importantly) two: I really want to buy an iPhone at the end of this month. Knowing that I'm such an important customer, it seems unlikely that Apple will keep me waiting. Me, of all people!

Looks to me like 60 days means during WWDC and not at the end of the month. Thst makes a lot of sense since the developers can buy it during the conference and learn to program it. That Apple store better have a special allocation of iPhones as the attendies are going to rush the store.

Looks like uncle Walt has let slip a possible early June release-WWDC?

I wonder after this slip up he will get the :apple: goodies early before anyone else like he normally does;)

Last year he had his iPhone 2 to 4 weeks before it was released. He may have his already.

oh man..... I just got my iPhone yesterday! I hope its one of those "all iPhones purchased within the last month will have its 3g chip activated with this firmware update" that would be sweet!

If the internet is so much faster in Finland, then I'm moving there ASAP.
Anyone got an extra pair of snowshoes for sale? :p

Seriously, if this is true, why is there such a disparity?

Apple submitted the documents for the current iPhone on 9 March 2007, got approval on the 17 May 2007 and released it on 30 June 2007. They had also requested a 45 day delay by the FCC in releasing documents related to the approval, starting with the day of approval.
