who cares about the speed, i want killer apps!

i personally have no problems with the current iphone internet speed although its less than stellar. what i want is cut and paste, more gestures with the touch screen, voice dialing (about freakin' time), etc.

dont get me wrong, without apple all the other u.s. cell bosses would still be sitting on their big fat butts giving us improvements in homeopathic dosages. dont these guys ever go to korea and japan to see how much more advanced they are there?

Well also go ahead and factor in the fact that Japan is smaller than four US States and Korea is smaller than 37 states.

Not that your point is missed on me completely, but what are you implying exactly? That major cities in the US like NY, LA, DC, etc. suffer low bandwidth because we have more land mass?

Mossberg's point is that if we want to have a successful downloadable or streaming video technology that can be utilized on our very large HD flat screen TV's as well as our PC's, then we should at least be at the same speeds as other technologically advanced countries. Do you disagree with that? If so, why?

Case in point.

I believe the phrase is case andpoint. And you made neither case or point.

Don't too enthralled with pixel count.
You can put all the pixels you want into the thing and its still going to be a mediocre camera.
I'd much prefer camera body with good zoom lens, flash, and its own battery for which the iphone or touch just becomes a great brain.
If June brings 3G and a silly 2nd camera for worthless video chat, I'll stick with my touch or a first gen iPhone (which will probably get cheaper.)

If your saying it will never look as good as an SLR or even a point and shoot camera, that's true. But there will still be more definition in the picture.

3G coming soon? 60 days? Wow this is news (serious sarcasm)! 60 days would put us in June correct? Though I'll most likely get aG iPhone, I think its more interesting to see what AT&T and Apple will do now that AT&T has the 700MHz spectrum. Its clear that AT&T is going to be the premier wireless carrier for the unforeseen future. Now lets see when 4G is available. That's going to be news.
I think I read nothing until 2009, so there is still time.

It seems that Apple is much more willing to release advanced information about future iPhone releases than with any other product they have ever released.

Why would anyone buy an iPhone now with the 3G version a confirmed 60 days away?

Your definition of confirmed is very different from mine. And how do you conflate an off-hand comment made by Walt Mossberg with any kind of willingness on Apple's part?

I believe the phrase is case and point.

You are wrong to believe that.

Meh, I still think the launch date is fluid. So while he may be correct now, its entirely possible Steve would want to push back the release if he wanted to. Especially if he wants to milk a few more months of iPhone EDGE purchases.

Still though, thats Walt Mossberg, so I have a hard time arguing with him. I wouldn't be surprised if he expected that meeting to stay confidential.

Also the cable boost thing was correct - in the context of downloading or streaming a movie over the internet, the speed boost only lasts for a minute, and even a minute of 20Mb/s wont get you enough of a movie to get that far ahead (if the movie is in 720p, it is probably around 6-10Mb/s anyways).

AT&T wont be doing anything with that 700MHz spectrum until 2011 or 2012 when LTE comes online.

ha, i didn't know broadband in the US was so sucky! :)

i'm in athens, greece and i've got an 18Mb line plus unlimited local, long distance and international to 24 countries calls and i'm paying like
40-50 euro a month for that, around 60-80 us dollars.

i'm guessing in scandinavia it's a lot cheaper and faster! :)

i can't wait for the iphone to go 3g, that would be the point for me to get one, EDGE doesn't even exist here! i hope though that some companies will add unlimited data to their plans cause 3g costs ****loads!

ps. good point about ubiquitous internet access being very important!

If they have those speeds on the Island of Santorini then I might move there! And ... for the record, I'm jealous of your broadband speeds, oh, and the Acropolis.

Internet is bad in the United States. Do these guys know how bad it is here in Australia?! You cannot get over 30GB of downloads in this country without being a registered business. They also charge us upwards of $110 for this ****.
Everything is included in the downloads (uploading, streaming etc) and there's no way to get rid of the downloads cap.
Australia's customer service is appalling compared to other civilized and westernized countries. It is a known fact that Australia has the customer service equivalent of customer service in the 1950s. We're almost 60 years behind.

since when is ozz civilized???

I kid, I kid:p

What about the FCC?

Doesn't the next gen iPhone/iPhone with 3G chip have to go through the FCC publicly 6 months before its release?

Question - Many folks point to the fact that nobody can find an FCC filing for a 3G iPhone as proof it is not yet ready. If Apple releases it first in a foreign country, do they need FCC approval? It may already be undergoing (or have already received) certification in a foreign country where it will be offered for sale in conjunction with the WWDC announcement with US availability "pending FCC approval".

They wouldn't need FCC approval to release it in the EU, but they would need to get a declaration of conformity to put a CE mark on it. If they've put a 3G iPhone through the tests needed to get a CE mark then they'll have put it through most of what is needed for FCC certification.

They pretty much have to release the iPhone simultaneously in all the markets they are in otherwise sales of the 2G iPhone will disappear until the 3G one launches.

I cant wait to see all the threads about how ATT just ****ed them over by hiking up the price for internet access on the iphone.
If people expect 3g and no difference in price then wake up from the reality distortion field.

3g will be awesome on the iphone. For many reasons unkown.

What about the FCC?

Doesn't the next gen iPhone/iPhone with 3G chip have to go through the FCC publicly 6 months before its release?

No. The testing can be done before the FCC filing and the processing of the filing takes 8-12 weeks if the FCC does it directly or as low as 1-2 weeks if the filing is done through a Telecommunication Certified Body (TCB).

Walt Mossberg is so full of himself that it makes me sick.
If you watched the clip you'd know he's right on the money AND he hardly mentioned the iPhone. It was more about how the internet in the states is horrible.

However, while he's right he needs to understand that the US is a heck of a lot larger, and therefore takes longer to service, than any country that has quick broadband (Japan, S. Korea, Scandinavia, etc.). I'm not defending the telcomm's (evil, greedy companies) because they definitely throttle and over charge but there is a valid reason we aren't as fast as other countries.

On it's own, Mossberg's comments might be rumor, but paired with the AT&T's CEO comments from earlier this week about "a couple of months" and the general buzz that's been brewing at all the rumor sites, I'd put money on a release by July 1st.

Now, whether Apple would release the iPhone sooner than WWDC, as PART of WWDC, or at the end of June as part of the software 2.0 and AppStore release... well-- Seeing as the iPhone is Apple's star performer right now, it would amaze me if a hardware revision wasn't launch with some kind of fanfare. Either a pre-WWDC special event, or a post WWDC iPhone 2.0, AppStore, and 3G iPhone V2 big bang: New software, new capabilities, new hardware.

Moving towards something else he said in the video...

... I hope Apple releases a Media Tablet for a future MacMini (with an amazing graphics card) which is the size of the Apple TV.

So you can seriously use the internet on a big screen TV.
(Consumers, not the geeks who already do it ;))

Has anyone noticed that Apple's website is now stating 5-7 days for shipping an iPhone from the online Apple Store?

I know there's been a shortage lately, but I understood that you could still easily get one from apple.com.
