re: aapl seeks to release 3G iPhone in time for $600 rebates...

It appears that AAPL is scurrying to get the 3G iPhone out in time for the $600 incentive rebates. How many of you are going to use your six hundred to buy a 3G iPhone?

It seems that Apple is much more willing to release advanced information about future iPhone releases than with any other product they have ever released.

Why would anyone buy an iPhone now with the 3G version a confirmed 60 days away?

I'm pretty sure upgrading your iPhone would not extend your contract. And I'm almost 100% sure that buying a new phone wouldn't break your contract. There were a few people who upgraded from the 8gb to 16gb iPhone with no hassles, and I broke my iPhone and got a new one without any hassle either.

Correct. I had my 8GB stolen so I felt like upgrading at the time to the 16GB. At first AT&T had my contract wrong on their system. I had to call them about it and they said issues in the system prevented it backdating to June 2007. They just called me last week, and said they resolved the issue and backdated my contract. :) I assume we can all do the same if we choose to buy the 3G model.

I don't necessarily think it is Apple that is willing. They had to with the first iPhone as they were shopping around for a provider. This is all speculation and despite the likely hood of the rumor it is that; a rumor.

Agree. I care about 3G for the iPhone. But what Mossberg said about the poor state of most home user's broadband connections effects me even more.

As one who could not care less about 3G, I second that call to pay attention to the rant about American 'broadband'.

Yeah. 5+ MP would be great. I just took over 400 pictures with my phone today. Easy to do. I would LOVE for a better MP CAMERA.

Don't too enthralled with pixel count.
You can put all the pixels you want into the thing and its still going to be a mediocre camera.
I'd much prefer camera body with good zoom lens, flash, and its own battery for which the iphone or touch just becomes a great brain.
If June brings 3G and a silly 2nd camera for worthless video chat, I'll stick with my touch or a first gen iPhone (which will probably get cheaper.)

me in the back of the board room at 6:53:

Walt: ...there will be a 3G iphone in 60 days and...
Me: WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA....WALT--WHAT THE HELL DID YOU JUST SAY?

A 3G iPhone should have video recording capabilities, since it would have access to a data network capable of sending it quickly. Then again, Apple wouldn't settle for extremely low-res video (176x144) on a device with a huge screen. It would have to be QVGA (320x240) or iPhone's resolution (480x320), probably in H.264 format.

I noticed that too! I think it is very sad and it really annoys me. Now I AM NOT PERFECT, but I try and it scares me that people are not intelligent enough to simply comprehend the meaning of what they are saying. I think some people just give in because they are lazy or because everyone just says it wrong anyway, but that is sad as well.

The real point is that it is no secret that Americans are becoming illiterate and have absolutely slaughtered the English language. Read some classical eloquent old English and then listen to how teens talk today. Their vocabulary is pathetically limited and morphed into an internet slang crude language because they lack the ability to properly express themselves. I don't mean to get off topic either, but it makes me fear for our future generations in such a high tech and intelligent world with vast competition.

Other annoying things people butcher all the time:
FERmiliar, anywayS...

The US really does need to catch up. We are losing all jobs but high tech ones pretty much, and yet we are so far behind in the world in our own tech. Time to get on the bag America!

Watch the film "Idiocracy" by Mike Judge - it be all that! ... um, I mean: This film explores the decline of civilized discourse and culture in America, elucidating in a satirical fashion what our future might resemble in five hundred years.

It was nice to hear Mossberg touch upon net neutrality and the pathetic service of North American ISPs. It's currently a very heated debate here in Canada (CRTC / Unions / Wholesale Partners vs. Bell Canada), as it was in the recent past with Comcast in the USA.

I don't think 3G for the iphone is going to improve things much. I know there is a big hype about this but all its going to do is maybe allow some apps to run without wi-fi.

For me it means I'll be able to use the BBC iPlayer when not in a hotspot. I've given the iPlayer a whirl on o2's Edge and it isn't good. 3G isn't incredibly fast but good enough to watch TV anywhere.

And of course the iTunes and App store away from wifi networks. There aren't many of those around me so buying songs on the go is out of bounds for me

I'd put money on the next iPhone having proper video recording functionality. It's entirely possible to do it with the current model but recording might be an artificial reason to get everyone upgraded to a new iPhone.

3g has been a given, and this has been the timetable the rumors have discussed for some time now. that doesn't ensure that it's true, but makes this less surprising.

that said, now i'm more curious about whether or not the new iphone will have wireless N in it so that i can set my time capsule to N only and have all my stuff work with it. i wouldn't expect it to be faster because of wireless N, but i just want to set my home network up that way. since ALL of apple's wireless now is N capable, i'd like to see this in the phone as well.

dub?

did anyone notice that the camera moved away from his mouth when he said 60 days? maybe it was.... DUBBED?!!?!?!

It will be late June. Apple and under estimating time are one in the same.

More importantly then 3g, where is the talk about GPS?

Apple will just change the date to make him look bad now ^_^

I'm afraid you don't know S. Jobs well enough. Apple will release a new iPhone on time, but will have workers take out the 3G chip the night before. ;)

No.

Mossberg's talk was primarily focused on delivering video content through the internet. Two classic moments for me - slightly unrelated to 3G coming in 60 days (I think June 9) - were:

1 - When he slammed his hand down in disgust at the advertising that viewers must endure.

2 - When he stated "we suck at broadband" and then made a plea to our next president to get us to compete with the broadband delivery speed of other countries like Japan and Korea.

I couldn't agree more with him on both accounts.

Well also go ahead and factor in the fact that Japan is smaller than four US States and Korea is smaller than 37 states.

and IMO theya re also way more techonologically advanced than america

I think thats what he means... they are small countries so therefore the resources required are more easily obtainable than in a huge market like USA.

It still doesnt make a lot of sense though and stinks of monopoly tactics by these companies

when he was talking about 3g he still said it would be slow...especially compared to europe...why should I buy 3g then???

I think the point is that "broadband" here is crippled and suffers exponentially as more users rely upon the same connection. AT&T is looking ahead with 4G rollout in 2009. Anything Apple does in the interim is just filler. (But, boy, consumers love Apple filling.)

There is significant incentive to forge ahead with a 3G iPhone for many reasons, even if the experience does not yield tremendous performance to everyone, everywhere.

  1. Apple must maintain its status as innovator and technology leader
  2. Apple supplies an international market where 3g is commonplace
  3. Consumer demand will skyrocket sales
  4. 3G leaves room for next year's hardware upgrade
  5. 3G is less expensive and more power friendly than a year ago
  6. Faster connection will translate to more iTunes sales w/o WiFi
  7. Performance of iPhone Web apps dependent upon Internet connection need broadband
  8. GPS on iPhone requires instant status updates - broadband (unless countries' maps are stored inside)

It's a funny how a boat can leak from the top. These are not announcements from Apple. These are individuals within the inner circle with flatulent lips.
