Most overrated band would have to any band which comes at the end of this sentence...
"The Beatles are crap. There are way better bands today, like ......... "

Which brings me to another point. Beatles bashers. You think they were boring and uninnovative, but you know that they did invent/perfect modern music as we know it? List of things they did...
- Arrangement (2 guitars + bass + drums (+ maybe keyboard)), taken for granted today...
- Wrote their own songs. Beforehand there were professional song writers. The Beatles made writing your own songs expected from bands...
- Made the album a piece in itself. The Beatles arranged songs on an album so that they worked together. Not a compilation as there was before.
- Which brings me to Sergeant Pepper. Every song was different to anything that had gone before, and yet it still worked.
- Variety of styles. Bubblegum pop, proto-Rock, Ballad, experimental songs (see Yellow Submarine, Strawberry Fields, I am the Walrus e.t.c.), Rock, proto-Heavy Metal . They tried everything. And it all worked...
- And most of all...it was good! Hence why girls screamed and such at the time, and their music collection is the most valuable today...

I take it you agree with me... correct me if I'm wrong. And by the way, I am a HUGE Beatles fan.

The Beatles still are overrated, no matter what personal opinion is expressed about how wonderful they were. They have/had their place and were very influential, sure, but they hardly defined music as we know it today.

Beatles fanboys say they're all dat, Beatles bashers say they ain't. The fact is they were just another popular group with a moderate amount of creativity. They deserve a place in music history but not the grand throne everyone puts them on.

In my mind, Coldplay and Nirvana. They have never given me anything with their music.

I'd define overrated as a band living more out of their early, rather than later works (this way you can include bands that aren't around anymore.)

#1 HAS to be Jimmy Buffett, hands down - He has exactly TWO songs that the vast majority of people know:

a. Margaritaville
b. Cheeseburger in Paradise

If that's not overrated, I don't know what is.

To a lesser extent, I could add the Rolling Stones to this list...a couple of popular hits, mostly in the 70's/early 80's.

Dieder: I know this thread is to a large degree "personal opinion", but I'd like to hear why you think Queen is overrated?

They have so many hits that are just considered classics by almost everyone who listens to them...I just couldn't personally imagine *ANYONE* thinking Queen was overrated. Just interested to know :)

Any band that ever was signed by a major label. Or that more than 100 people in a small club like. Or that gets any portion of radio play. Or that people actually like. And wait - it can't have a melody, or any catchy chorus.
That seems to be the problem with a lot of these posts - they put down anything with the slightest pop edge or catchy melody.

Uh, seriously though, I nominate AC-DC - they cannot sing, and the playing is about average.

For me - jonas brothers, for sure!

Beatles, Rolling Stones, Queen...

I can't remember if it was touched on way back when this thread began, but to me those two comments bring up the two very different ways we can look at this question.

Are the Jonas Brothers really overrated? I mean, here you have a band that may very well have not even existed when this thread started, or at the very least was only a fraction as popular as they are today. No one really considers them brilliant musicians - I don't see AllMusic or Rolling Stone complimenting their latest effort. Even the fans they do have don't necessary think they're amazing musicians, just that they're fun and cute. In a matter of years (or months, if we're lucky) they'll have been long forgotten and the fact that someone would have even thought of adding them to a list of "most overrated bands" will be absurd.

On the total opposite end of the spectrum, you've got the Stones, Queen and - the text book, flag bearing band in this thread - The Beatles. These are bands that very few people think are talentless, even those criticizing them. For some people, they just fail to live up to the enormous hype that has become attached to their names. There may be someone here and there that claims their talentless hacks, but most of the Beatles bashers are simply saying they're not the second coming.

Personally, I think the second discussion is more in the true spirit of an "overrated" thread.

Some more modern (like, popular within the last year) bands I'd add to the overrated list are:

Vampire Weekend
Kanye West
MGMT

Also, anything by Ryan Adams.

Great post Unspeaked. I think you hit the nail on the head.

Vampire weekend is a good example of an overrated band. I agree they were one of best new bands, but I think least worst new band is more appropriate. Unfortunately the competition is equally as bad or worse at the moment.

It's amazing how quickly fans churn through bands nowadays. Just thinking back to the bands that were popular as recently as 2005 or 2006, so many have either broken up or been completely ignored with their follow ups that it's astounding.

In the time it used to take bands to record and release their second album, these days you have groups that form, play clubs, get signed, get massive, release a failed follow up and breakup. It's so accelerated. Makes it even more impressive when bands break through and have a little staying power like Radiohead or Coldplay or Kings of Leon, even if you're not a fan...

Once the threads pass a dozen pages, it makes it a little difficult to reference past posts... sorry!

One other band that gets my nomination is the sex pistols. The. Most. Overrated. Band. Of All. Time. They were around for 1 album before they burned out, while bands like the ramones stuck around for 20yrs - yet they are more famous! They could not play their instruments, every song sounds the same.
Also despite their "rebellious", "underground" sound, they were signed to a major label from the start, organized by a sex shop owner to make a fashion statement.

Plenty of bands with only one proper studio album have become legends.

Look at Joy Division - I don't think I've ever seen a band whose handful of songs has been repackaged and resold as often as theirs. I wouldn't say their acclaim-to-output ratio is any worse than the Sex Pistols.

KISS, for the small amount of talent that band has they should not have gotten anywhere. Though I guess they were meant to be entertainers more than musicians, like britney spears or the jonas brothers...

OMG!!!

Why is she famous? All her fans are 10 or younger! I think HM will be like the Beanie Baby - here for 3 years then fall off the face of the planet.

Miley Cyrus will be sucked dry of any and all entertainment value by the time shes 20. By the time shes 22, she will probably be a drug addict.

I'd have to personally say U2. God, I don't understand why they're so famous. It's really not that great. Bono also irks me with the charity thing on one end while pumping his millions out of the country so he doesn't have to pay as much taxes.

Hey, instead of getting together with trendy companies and doing this Product (RED) crap, how about giving some of the millions and millions you have directly to charities? o_O

This thread is about musicians, not teenage actors...

She tries to pass herself off as one, unfortunately.
