okay, now if it can make breakfast for me and kiss me goodbye I can ask my fiance to move out.

I'm pretty certain they would be telling the truth about the processor on the device listening for the command locally. It would chew way too much battery and data to run the translation all the way back to googles servers and back.

Now, if you were to interject wondering if it listened to other keywords and recorded that... it would be interesting. (Although, with the open source nature of the product, I'm certain someone would catch this behaviour before anyone was at any real risk).
Unless of course the NSA went to the FISA court, got a secret warrant requiring Google to record everything (since the technology obviously permits it) and further ordered them to lie about it if asked (as most FISA warrants do) and not to release any related changes to the code, so that no one would be any the wiser. (Anyone objecting that Moto and/or the carriers would have to be privy to such changes: no problem they get their very own FISA warrants. Non-US carriers wouldn't need to be told.)

Negative effects on battery life? Sure, very possible if someone talks a lot during their waking hours, but so what -- it will be just another Android product that starts performing badly a couple of months after you bought it - what else is new?

Paranoid? Only if you didn't read about XKeyscore in yesterday's Guardian.

This is the first android phone that makes me seriously consider switching to android. Hardware an software controlled by google is a big move.

The big problem I have is, ever since Android (stupidly) took out the ability to move apps to the SD card, the 16GB storage in these phones is looking anemic. Either Android has to put that feature back in, or manufacturers better start putting more default storage memory in their phones.

I just think Apple is pushing it with the larger iphone. They are giving Samsung and others a REALLY long time to OWN the market for smartphones with larger screens.

Remember the smartphones aren't like mp3 players, you just don't get one and use it for years and years before replacing it. Most people buy their smartphones on contract and then the phone companies allow you to upgrade after only a couple of years. When Apple comes out with a larger screen phone and more bumped up specs then the market will still be open for business. No one can really own the cell phone market. Even when Apple was at the top when the iPhone first came out and then again with the introduction of Retina, being at the top didn't last that long.

I really don't understand....this is not Apple news, this isn't anything to do with Apple, apart from the fact it is competition. Not Apple news, don't post it, unless it is really huge news (this, however is not. It is a good phone, but not revolutionary, like 8GB RAM and a flexible indestructable phone).
But I do like the phone, I just wish it was available WORLD BLOODY WIDE!

Have a little research, mate. This is using Moto X8, in otherwords, "We have 8 cores mate, but we don't want to go in, my specs are better than yours race". Don't just take everything on a plate, otherwise you would think iPhone 5 was the thinnest phone at launch, it wasn't.

its clearly a middle of the road phone. even the android faithful are shunning it

"assembled in the USA"
I'm not American so I don't know why this has to be mentioned. Is this a big thing?

It's a cool phone, no doubt. But iPhone will still sell better.

And I totally thought that was James Franco at the beginning.

Basically it's American made but some parts used to make it aren't American.

Literally, for it to be Made in USA everything that makes the object has to be America.

And that's pretty tough to do.

I've been an Apple user since before it was "cool", and will be one till the day I die....but even I have to admit that Apple is really dragging it's heels on releasing a larger iphone. We all know they will. It's what the market seems to want.

I know Apple always takes their sweet time. Steve Jobs was notorious for saying things like Apple will never come out with a music player, or a phone or a tablet...and then coming out with one. It's practically their modus operandai...to deny or wait awhile or outright deny the need for a product while a trend is beginning to form....and then coming out with their own better version...and end up OWNING the market.

I'm still waiting for the mythical iPhone "killer". It never arrives.

I applaud Google for not even trying for the iPhone "killer" with the MotoX, but maybe Google would have been better off setting its sights a little higher than it did?

I really dislike the lack of capacitive buttons below the screen for home, back, ect. Why use up screen realistate for buttons when you've got a bezel otherwise just taking up space? This is my only grievance with the Nexus as well. You quote that it has a 4.7" screen but its quite a bit less than that when you take in to account the needless waste for buttons.

Also Google, replace the recent apps button with the menu key again. Then I can finally get away from samsung.

Honestly, this is getting ridiculous. People too lazy to set reminders and wake up calls. You do this before you go to sleep not the next morning. If people are too lazy to get out of bed to do this, then they should stick to a normal clock / alarm combo. Add to this, having your phone on overnight for the sake of laziness, really makes me see that with the invention of technology, laziness is the new sickness in society.

Lazy people are lazy. They'd still be lazy if they had to click clock to set an alarm. For the rest of the world however, this is great.

Are you seriously saying we should be turning off our phones at night? Do you unplug your landline too while you sleep? Kind of wreckless but okay.

Apple, please listen. Battery life on a phone matters because people use them on the go for everything. Battery life on a pro machine like rMBP's should not take precedence over performance especially when the outgoing machines already have good life.

I like this new phone and the battery life seems very enticing -- I'm lucky if my iphone 5 lasts me the entire work day (I like to listen to music at work). It's enough to make me *think about jumping ship.

Technically it's assembled in the USA (some components are manufactured overseas and some are built here). And yes, it means something. It means that some manufacturing jobs are coming back to the US. Right now all our phones are assembled in China, Brazil, or (I think Mexico) so moving those jobs to the US is a big deal because traditionally manufacturing jobs are pretty good paying jobs. The US built its power on the back of manufacturing and those jobs have been moving overseas for a couple of decades to take advantage of really cheap labor. For many people recouping some of those jobs is a really big deal.

This likely can't happen until they pull their heads out of their asses regarding screen size. A larger screen size allows significantly more room for battery. This is why android phones are getting so large. My Galaxy Note II lasts me a day and a half of heavy use, and 2 days of light use.

To be honest, the prospect of a 24h battery is far more intriguing than the thinness of the iPhone 5 or the prospect of an even thinner iPhone.

So here's the thing.....

Google Now is incredible software. You have to use it to understand just how cool and useful it is. The ability to use it hands free? Might come in handy but it might also be one of those things that works better in theory. I guess we'll see soon enough. I applaud innovative features such as this but at the end of the day the core OS is what it's all about and Android OS has a long way to go before it approaches the fit and finish of iOS. My sense is that the vast majority of peeps who say they're gonna ditch their iPhone for the X have never really used Android OS for any length of time. I'm not gonna turn this into a dissertation on the shortcomings of Android OS; I'm only going to say be prepared to be underwhelmed. Minor irritations like having to download a separate craptastic app just to have visual voicemail and the inability to send videos in MMS without them looking like something from a first gen flip phone mount up. ....and be prepared to miss iMessage. I just returned to my iPhone after a 2-month journey with the HTC One, which is arguably the nicest Android phone on the market so I know what I'm talking about. So go ahead and get your X. Ask it 10 times a day (hands free) what the weather is like. Play with your widgets. Have fun. .....but you'll be back.

----------

.....and anyone that thinks they are going to get anywhere *close* to 24 hr. of *real world* battery life from the X is just plain stu......not very bright. :)

I'm kind of getting over the smartphone craze- they are all basically doing the same things/looking the same these days.

^This

I just don't think I care anymore. I'll see what's out there when my iPhone 5 is getting long in the tooth.

Announced battery life specs is useless against actual usage battery life. :)

Precisely! You're absolutely right.

But since they're the only reference value spec given by manufacturers we have considered them as a starting point.

Hence, according to them you have something like this,

(r)MBP 13" & 15" - up to 7 hours
iPhone - up to 8 hours
MBA 11" - up to 9 hours
iPad - up to 10 hours
MBA 13" - up to 12 hours
Moto X - up to 24 hours

Moto X is way far beyond.
