Since last year? Android manufacturers have been doing it since the original iPhone was released.
Well.....yes. :)

And I do think this is probably the most blatant carbon copy I've seen of an Apple device, which is why it's drawing so much attention. But I think Xiaomi and Huwawei have done iPhone X clones that also aren't being sold in the US as well.

When you have a beautiful, functional product like the iPhone X, cheap garbage knock-offs are inevitable.

I agree it's a blatant rip off. I am surprised how companies get away with this. Just look at how many watches look almost exactly like a Rolex. If I were a company I'd be embarrassed. Because don't forget... in the USA corporations are people too.

Me after looking at Xiaomi Mi 8 and Motorola P30

Still the competition lacks a shred of insight. Apple’s exterior design is both form and function tightly knitted, with years of iteration behind every decision. Motorola just **** out what they think will sell. So basic

Companies like Lenovo, Oppo and Xiaomi are not about original thinking. They exist to make cheap copies of popular devices and that’s how they make their money.

As soon as a viable solution to in/on screen cameras is developed, the notch on the iphone will be gone.

Who will want it back? Do people actually prefer the notch?
I find that hard to believe as I find it hideous myself and cant imagine any aesthetic perfectionist (I'm not one myself) actually liking the notch because it gets rid of the chin.
It doesn't compute.
Will the ipad have a notch?
How about Macs?
Surely if it's a preferred look rather than an ugly stopgap, it would be a welcome edition to any screen?

As for the Motorola, yeah that's a blatant copy.

You’re missing the point. It’s part of the design that enables a fantastic feature, FaceID and the TrueDepth camera system. I wouldn’t want to trade those features to have a squared off top or give the screen a forehead instead.

Actual users don’t mind having it there. For me, the iPhone X is the best iPhone ever. No chin, minimal bezels and a functional notch that doesn’t compromise my experience in the least.

My point is that it's hideous, in my opinion. I didn't miss any point as I wasn't replying to anyone, there was no initial point.
If FaceID and the TrueDepth (really, is it like these are two separate systems now or what?)could be incorporated into the not so small 3.7mm bezel, would you still want a notch for the sake of a notch?

All other things equal, a notch still represents extra screen space over a phone without one, and a compromise I don’t mind making on a device like a smartphone which is typically used in portrait mode anyways.

I am not so sure about a notch on an iPad though. We will see how Apple implements it later this year.

Would you prefer a notch if the notch wasn't need for the sensors?

Would you prefer a notch if the notch was purely cosmetic?

Any examples?

In the case of the iPhone, the notch is what allows Apple to do away with bezels in their device. So it fulfils both a cosmetic and functional purpose in that regard.

I can’t envision a purely cosmetic notch.

How did he get it right, when Samsung, the biggest player in the game have designs that look nothing like the iPhone, 8 or x?
Forget about them?
So the note 9 has bigger bezels than the note 8?? There is NOTHING new in Note 9. It’s a S9 with a stylus. S9 sales are tanking. I’m sure the Note 9 will fail too. Actually the last four Galaxy’s note phones all look the same. So saying Apple can’t innovate and Sammy can is a joke.

Okay, let's try this.

If Apple were able to incorporate the face ID setup into the 3.7mm bezel at the top of the screen, would you still prefer a notch?

It's not a hard question.

That’s because Samsung’s designs are now dated. 4 years is a bit to long to keep recycling the same designs.

No need to make every thread about Samsung.
