Okay, let's try this.

If Apple were able to incorporate the face ID setup into the 3.7mm bezel at the top of the screen, would you still prefer a notch?

It's not a hard question.

Yes, because as I stated, a notch still represents extra screen space.

Likewise, if you want a top bezel, would you also insist on a bottom bezel for the sake of symmetry?

So the note 9 has bigger bezels than the note 8?? There is NOTHING new in Note 9. It’s a S9 with a stylus. S9 sales are tanking. I’m sure the Note 9 will fail too. Actually the last four Galaxy’s note phones all look the same. So saying Apple can’t innovate and Sammy can is a joke.

Bezels don't worry me as they don't cut into content space, hence all phones having bezels.
A notch is a no go for me.
That notch doesn't disappear when you turn you phone to landscape mode, if you want an uninterrupted display, you need to reduce the size to eliminate the notch, that is an unacceptable compromise in my opinion.
It most certainly isn't extra screen space.
I'm not too wound up on symmetry except when it comes to viewing content.

I bet the notch will be gone in a year or two.

It is a total ripoff, but not a bad design, could have been worse (pixel???), even the chin is used to host the logo

That is not noticeable when viewing content.
This feels to me like the whole 16:9 vs 4:3 ratio debate for iPads.

Depending on how you use your devices, you may well end up preferring one over the other. Someone using their iPad for a ton of video watching may prefer 16:9. Another person who uses it for reading would prefer 4:3, and view the black bars as an acceptable compromise when watching video.

Same here. I use my iPhone predominately in portrait mode and rarely watch video in landscape mode. I am currently using an iPhone 8+ but don’t think having a notch would bother me given how I normally use mine.

This is digusting
Hows DARE Apple copy the Motorola P30!!!
These Chinese are such great innovators and intellectuals - it’s a travesty Apple should infringe thier property
China - please start a trade war to level to playing field!!
Perhaps this already is part of the trade war - from the Chinese side, this would be a great way to undercut sales of iPhone X's in Asia (and Europe?). Corollary to that, Apple products are manufactured in China as well. With Trump's trade war, what incentive do Chinese electronics manufacturing companies have to "guard" Apple's secrets? With multinational companies such as Apple, competition takes on strange cloaks.

Well that's a a good thing for you then.

Will you be upset when the notch disappears?

The Note 5 and 7 look the same as the Note 8 and 9?
The meaning of the word same has morphed recently....

how come copy cats get away with this? Isn't there patents?
Why don't they sue them like they sued Samsung for years for copying the original iPhone, or did Samsung sue Apple?

Maybe Apple licensed the design, making more money but not worrying about the competition
We're in a trade war with China. Patents don't apply to Chinese companies (Motorola is now a Chinese company, as it was bought out by Lenovo, also a Chinese company) that don't sell product in the U.S. This phone isn't competing with Apple in the U.S., just everywhere else where U.S. patents don't apply. And you can bet that Apple's phone prices will skyrocket in China, so products like this will outsell Apple's versions.

Depends on what replaces the notch, I suppose.

If Apple can make the notch disappear behind the display and leave me with a uniformly rectangular screen and minimal bezels, without any of that moving camera nonsense, why not?

Pimple/notch call it what you like. My point is the Essential phone was the first to market and there are a few companies with successful patents for a notched design. Funny thing is the notch is already a dated design with fully bezeless phones already being released. Give it a year or two and bezels and notches will be a thing of the past.

No.
They both have a cutout. One has a notch to accommodate Face ID, the front facing camera, and speaker, the other has a cutout for a camera.
What’s also interesting is the essential cutout was identical to the Lg patent.

No one cares about first to market when it comes to patents, especially if the patent predates the phone in question.

As I showed it wasn’t a vague concept of a cutout, but a a detailed diagram of the iPhone X that would launch within the year.
Unlike the lg patent you were asserting that looked nothing like the lg 7, and was filed after the iPhone X.

Yeah Apple has THE patent on the notch, not a camera cutout. And Apple was the first as provided by the date on the patent. That’s just the facts.

I find that Samsung has a dated design, without the notch it makes it looks even more so. Sales of premium Samsung handsets are at a 5 year low, there must be a valid reason....

Since the entire industry adopted the notch it can’t really be a dated design , maybe in a couple of years.

Sure in a couple of years. Just not today.

And no If it has a chin it’s not bezeless or egde to edge.

Which of the Samsung phone had All Screen with a notch that Apple "followed"?

They didn’t

Sharp started it in 2014.

Samsung did their own nearly bezeless display in 2017 with the infinity display. However they had been slowly reducing the size of their bezels over the years.

Am I missing something? That’s what you claim Apple copied?

Incredibly dated design used twice a year for 4 years. Galaxy s at the beginning of the year note at the end.

Gets old quickly.

Still looks 100x better then any notched phone. Besides everyone is getting so defensive over me pointing out the notch is just a bandaid solution that will not be around very long. Relax people!

That’s your opinion and your entitled to it.
But if it has a chin, it’s not edge to edge or bezeless

Depends on your definition. If we discount Face ID, there really is a "more or less" consistent bezel around the entire display, which is missing from a lot of android smartphones who aren't able to make the screen curve at the bottom.
Not really, your statement highlights that, "If we discount", the devil is always in the small print.
The definition of bezel-less means that it has no bezel. The iPhone X has a bezel at the top and hence is not bezel-less.
Come back when they remove the notch and you can then claim that.

Here is the first phone that is bezel-less https://www.scmp.com/lifestyle/arti...hone-oppo-find-x-truly-daring-device-and-good.

You always want to turn everything into an Apple vs Samsung debate, get over it. The essential phone was the first phone to have a notch, thats just a fact. Also Apple are not the only ones with a successful notch patent, as you can see most phones have a notch now. The next fact is companies are already finding ways to get around the notch and in a few years the abomination that is the notch will be no longer and thats a good thing!! Looks are subjective so if you prefer the notch over the Samsung approach then thats cool, thats why we have choices but I think we all agree a fully bezel-less phone will look best.

The essential phone was the first phone to the market with a notch. LG also won a patent for a notched phone in November 2016. Apple was not the first.

Apple patented the notch first.

Maybe you haven’t noticed but Samsung is the only oem left without a notch.
If you talk dated designs. That’s what will come up.

Actually they are the first with a successful notch patent . You keep ignoring that.

Sure a company that rushed a half baked product that essentially killed said company was first ;).

Ok I can see where the confusion is coming from, you are referring to who got a patent first and i'm referring to the first phone that was released. If i'm completely honest I don't really care, the sooner the notch goes way the better imo.

Maybe you haven’t noticed but Samsung is the only oem left without a notch.

Thats EXACTLY why I have a Samsung phone in my pocket, I prefer the small chin on bottom and bezel on top then a notch it also gives a better body to screen ratio. Im also one of the people who thinks the curved edges make the S9 look awesome. Like we agreed on, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
