Did Apple copyright the notch? Or that wallpaper style? The iPhone X design is pretty generic looking, which was part of its allure, being very minimalist. I'm not certain what identifying characteristics Apple could show to prove that it was copied. When Samsung was sued, the software look (grid of apps) was used to prove it copied Apple.

Are you kidding no one had a notch before the iPhone X.

Apple applied to Patent the iPhone X design back in 2016....

And they got it.

Don’t know why you would think it’s generic.

I said the look of the X was generic, not the notch, which I asked if it had been patented, thanks for the info. Apple suing Motorola exclusively when every other Android maker is using a notch, that doesn't make sense. I don't think these other makers would leave themselves open to what Samsung went through for years, there is something else going on that allows these makers to use a notch. The main point was, Motorola getting sued over this seems unlikely.

Shows how good apple is when everyone copys it
Do you understand the actual reason these companies copy the iPhone design? Its not because the iPhone X design is something special. They copy it because Apple are the most recognised brand when it comes to phones, Apple could release the worst looking phone in history and others would still copy it.

Except the patent was on the entire design of the iPhone X including the notch and the rear camera module, there is nothing about the design that is generic, hence the patent.

No Motorola won’t get sued.
Lenovo, however that is entirely different matter.

I don’t think Samsung is stupid enough to copy Apple again.

This is great news, it means the notch is less of a differentiator now and Apple will need to find some other design to differentiate the iPhone, hopefully that means the notch will be gone in the not so distant future?
That differentiation theory sounds so much more likely than Apple just wanting to waste as little screen space as possible...

Motorola's latest P30 smartphone is making headlines this week, but not for an impressive feature set or a unique design. As it turns out, Motorola has opted to copy the design of the iPhone X, resulting in an Android smartphone that's nearly identical to Apple's flagship device.

The P30, which features a 6.2-inch display, is by far the most iPhone X-like Android smartphone that we've seen yet, with a frontal design that includes rounded corners, a notch that's similar to the iPhone X notch in size and shape, and an edge-to-edge design. There's a small bezel at the bottom, which is the only feature that distinguishes the P30 from the iPhone X.

At the back, the P30 features a dual-lens camera setup in a vertical orientation much like the iPhone X, and it replaces the Apple logo with a Motorola logo that doubles as a fingerprint sensor. The colorful metallic body of the device is reminiscent of the Huawei P20, making the rear of the smartphone look like a P20/iPhone X hybrid.

Black and white versions look a little more like the iPhone X, and Motorola has even been marketing the device with iPhone-style wallpapers.

Motorola's P30 is available in China and isn't being distributed in the United States just yet, and while it has an iPhone X-style design, it is positioned as a mid-range device that's more affordable, perhaps attempting to lure customers who want the iPhone X look but aren't able to shell out $1,000.

Inside the Motorola P30, there's a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chip, 6GB RAM, 128GB of storage, and a 3,000mAh battery. The two rear cameras feature 5 and 16-megapixel sensors while there's a 12-megapixel front-facing camera. Despite the notch, there's no front-facing facial recognition system.

As The Verge humorously pointed out, the P30 looks so similar to the iPhone X that when doing a Google image search based on the P30, Google guesses that it's an iPhone X.

Since the iPhone X launched last November, many Android smartphone makers have adopted the notched design to allow for maximum screen space to compete with the iPhone lineup. Smartphones from manufacturers that include LG, Leagoo, Huawei, OnePlus, Asus, Vivo, Oppo, and others have adopted the notch design. Even Google is set to copy the iPhone X's notch with the upcoming Google Pixel 3 XL, based on leaked images.

Apple is planning to unveil three additional smartphones that use the notch design introduced with the iPhone X, and we're just a few weeks away from their debut. Based on rumors, we can count on a second-generation 5.8-inch iPhone X with an OLED display, a larger-screened 6.5-inch OLED iPhone that can be thought of as an "iPhone X Plus," and a 6.1-inch device with an LCD display and a lower price tag.

All three will feature an edge-to-edge display with a notch that houses a TrueDepth camera system, doing away with the Home button in the iPhone lineup. Apple is expected to introduce the new 2018 iPhone lineup right around the second week of September, perhaps on September 11 or September 12.

I'm not hating on the iPhone X, it is a unique design for sure. I think something can look generic and unique at the same time, but that may be because I love minimalism which is bland in a unique way, if that definition makes any sense.

It’s simple Because iPhones sell.

Other companies want to emulate Apples success so they copy their designs it nothing new.

It’s the most recognized brand because of Apple designs.

Yup just like Samsung did before they had to curve their displays. Horrible design.

Aren’t generic and unique Antonyms?

Don’t think it’s possible for something to be both generic and unique.

I agree it's power of the brand. However that notch is ugly as sin and other companies are still copying it because its Apple.

Copied? Smartphones are so small and so many of their features are dictated by necessity that it is hard to imagine them looking that different. Someone would have to make one round like a coin or triangular to really be different.

where do you think that phone you ditched when you upgraded in March went?
if you guessed motorola, you wins!

why you......

So the top corners are edgeless, which proves they can pull off that sort of thing with the screen, but they add a notch anyways... Said notch contains nothing of use, it is literally a blemish on the face of the phone... Not to mention despite the edgeless top, the bottom still has a chin...

What in the everloving christ is wrong with these people

Good. That means Apple continues to be popular. We should be concerned when companies stop “blatantly” copying Apple’s design and features; that would mean Apple is no longer relevant.

It sure would be nice if macrumors would start a new Article / Thread, titled:

"Apple Blatantly Copies ..."

& let their Readers fill in the rest !

AAPL has a long history of copying others.

They will, in-fact, very-likely announce a new app that is a near-copy of an existing app, that has been Off
the Radar of most, but should NOT have been.

If the brand isn’t consistent it won’t last long.

Nokia, Motorola, HTC, Sony, BlackBerry, Windows mobile; all had devout fans that cared about the brand, that’s just not enough, without consistent quality products, that’s what Apple offers.

I disagree, I like the notch, maybe it’s the curved edges or the absence of a chin. But I like the notch on the iPhone X, the only complaint I have is I find it too small for me, which will be rectified with the iPhone Xplus.

I don’t think I would have liked the notch without the curved edges.

There are a bunch of rabid one plus 6 fans that would also disagree with you in regards to the notch, not just iPhone X users.

There’s a specific purpose to the notch, a reason it exists. I have a feeling the powers that be at Apple decided to accept it rather than try to hide it. They were never going to do something asymmetrical anyway, so what could they do besides a notch? I highly doubt anyone decided let’s do a notch to make the iPhone stand out.
