Why not release it on iTunes, google play, Vudu...etc? Give it a chance to reach a wider audience??
Because on all platforms the sales are applied to Disney + which is wholly owned by Disney. They are not wanting revenue to be decreased though middlemen.

Disney+’s global reach extends to Australia, Austria, Canada, Channel Islands, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Japan, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, as well as the United States.

2 weeks later on Sept 15th D+ is coming to Portugal, Belgium, Finland, Iceland, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

This is also being shown in movie theaters in countries that have them open such as Canada, China, South Korea.

All of these people justifying spending $30 for a single streaming title is very scary - the downfall of theaters. Watch and see. If this many are truly willing to do this, then it can only be a matter of time.

I think it would be more flexible and handy when you had physical copy at hands. Movie collector usually rip their own collection, leaving physical copies as backup source. Since digital files are already live on hard drive, it would easily backed up into other hard drive / network / computer. Once multiple back up created, losing physical copies are no longer headache. Physical copies are still outweighs benefits rather than internet accessed only media.

I collecting my own physical DVD/BD because it nicely showed in my shelves too.
If you want to spend the time and make it a hobby, sure, disc collections and sophisticated backup systems are cool. If it's just about preserving the media, most people simply assume nearly everything will be available on streaming. The one time they're wrong, they can put in the effort to find it.

Hard to really judge much with a pandemic that is in play.

Anyone complaining about the cost can just wait and it will be on regular disney+ but then again you probably don't even subscribe to that but if you wait long enough it will eventually be on regular tv. But you probably will just torrent (steal) it anyway and watch it on a small screen with no surround sound... or you probably don't even want to watch it in the first place and you just live to complain on forums. The only reason its $30 is because of covid and they can't release in theaters which even before covid were going bankrupt left and right.

With cheap large screen 4k TVs, more and more “commercials” in theaters, etc., they were already having a tough time competing. Hence more and more were trying to improve food options, fancy chairs, in-seat food ordering, pre-assigned seats, etc. But, in the end, there are few movies that benefit from being seen in a theater, and i agree it’s a matter of time.

All they are doing is provide a means of paying for subscriptions via the credit account registered. Disney even provided the app and maintenance updates besides being the streaming host. I doubt Disney would accept 30% transaction. More likely 15% or less. After all Disney negotiates distribution of their movies to sell on Apple TV app.
They are providing the ecosystem that comes with a lot of customers.

There is no precedent to change things. Theater revenue is still magnitudes higher than anything possible by streaming. Trolls earning nearly 100 million is chump change. Haven't you noticed that a lot of Disney titles were 1 Billion + in 2019? Mulan was expected to get that originally. It might still get most of the distance with this hybrid release. :)

I'd be way more worried about theaters if nobody were willing to pay the $30 for a new release. Theaters would be permanently toast if nobody cared about seeing new movies so they can talk about them with friends and such. There's even FOMO. It would be a cultural shift difficult to reverse.

Any computer OS that has a browser can provide that. :D
I didn't buy Disney + through the apple store because I wanted the subscription to be available on a number of devices I use. For example if you have TVs that were before Apple TV app was added, utilizing the Apple subscription is worthless, because that manufacturer made available the Disney + app instead. So I did it via the web to encompass all my devices. ;)

It does seem that way, but still there is a lots of people that don't have residences that can do that so they go to the theaters, particularly in dense urban areas. The social interaction is still one of the main draws also. :)

PS in Japan where you would think they are so advanced, very few actually have migrated to 4k TVs yet. China and South Korea are lot more progressive.

I never understood people who pay these prices to watch a movie, You can rent a movie and watch it once for like $4-5.
10 movies*$5= $50 , 10 movies*$30=$300 !

I would only pay $30 for a movie if its a kids movie that my children will watch to death several times a day, which ironically Mulan movie could be...

It's not that much different than going out to watch a movie in a movie theater when it just comes out. And in that case you can't even watch it multiple times for that same initial price.

Personally I am looking forward to this Disney movie, which could be the biggest film this year when it launches on Sept 4 (Labor Day weekend in the USA). In terms of live action, appears this will be more epic than the Lion King. Although the movie Aladdin was better than I thought.

I feel the $29.99 price is justified because it is the right balance that Disney is doing. There was a lot of hard work done by the Disney team and crew to make this film. Considering this was meant to be played in theaters first - and due to safety concerns of pandemic, releasing the film this way does make sense as the practical option right now. It is still a “theatre status” movie. And not ready to buy or sold in stores yet. Also with Disney Plus - can’t wait to access their high quality library including Beauty and the Beast the 2017 remake (which was just released for the first time on 8/21), which I never had a chance to watch. Plus access to classic Disney series such as DuckTales and Rescue Rangers (which I am surprised that its available in HD).

Ironic that Disney has my favorite quote regarding this situation: “yo ho ho. A pirates life for me”

I’m on the fence on this. $30 is pretty steep but as a family of 4. That’s usually 1/3 of what a usual movie theater visit would cost. Plus I can pause and rewatch it if I so want to.
You are buying the viewing experience of going to a theatre. Now you are paying $30 for a YouTube experience.
