“Had anyone every gone out”... that’s the point, you’re not going out. Are you happy to pay restaurant prices for a meal at home?

The point is this is cheaper than going out. $30 + $1.5 for popcorn and $1 for soda for 3 or 4 people is a lot cheaper than the $80 or $90 bucks that would cost at a theater.

Crime? Ransoming? Regulation?

Do you get out much? Do you feel entitled to cheap movies?

If you don’t want to pay, then don’t watch. The choice is simple.

What precisely are you proposing to regulate? Do you feel that movies are somehow a basic survival necessity?

If people don’t think it’s worth the money just wait a few weeks and download the movie for free via torrents. Problem solved, free copies for everyone.

How much you wanna bet Apple gave Disney a discount to that 30% fee? Bet you anything Apple dropped it to 15%. Apple’s unfair, underhanded practices are becoming more obvious every day.

I don’t bet, but seeing as it’s a figurative question, I’ll answer. I’m 99% sure Apple gave Disney no discount whatsoever.

1. What unfair, underhanded prices are you referring to?
2. Why in the world would Apple give out discounts like that when the eyes of the world are currently on them anyway, due to Epic blatantly breaking App Store policy?

Thankfully got a 4K Dolby Vision capable TV and a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos AV receiver & speakers. Already a Disney+ subscriber on account of my entire household being Disney nuts (had a WDW holiday cancelled earlier this year ).

Will see what the reviews are like for Mulan, as we're huge fans of the original but haven't been blown away by the live actions remakes so far. Some hope for Mulan as they're not attempting to simply live action the original (Beauty & Alladin were not great, no interest in seeing 'live action' Lion King of Dumbo). If the reviews are good, I'll buy it as it will be cheaper than us all going to the cinema.

If they were to release Black Widow like this though? Would pay up in a heartbeat!

Let's draw it up another day, a stores like Costco or Sam's Club have membership fees to go inside of the store, and you get to purchase items that they sell. Think of the store membership fees as your D+ subscription and buying Mulan as something you'd buy in store.

except costco doesn't tell me i can eat / wear / use the items i purchase only for as long as i'm in the store

Going to movies has been way overpriced for years. $30 may be fine for families, but not a solo viewer.

For that money, I’d rather buy 2-3 blu rays or 4-6 digital releases I know I’ll watch more than once.

I will pay for one month D+ access when the Marvel and Star Wars series I’m interested in are available, watch those and cancel. If Mulan is available as part of D+ then, and not some $$$ exclusive then maybe I’ll give it a look.

I feel this way about all PVOD...I can wait.

$29.99 is just too much for me. I already pay for Disney+, but even without that, I'm not paying more than I would pay at the theatre to watch something on my couch.

Why not release it on iTunes, google play, Vudu...etc? Give it a chance to reach a wider audience??

I think it’s a great idea little bit greedy that you need to have a Disney subscription and 30$ to be able to see it. But I get why they use these little dirty tricks to get you into their subscription. Just wish it wasn’t region based. I mean money is money right? Or are money from people in other countries less worth? Talk about discrimination. As long as there is regional blocks there will be piracy. Not everybody wants to pony up a subscription and vpn costs etc to watch when it’s simpler to go to a pirate site. Think they loose a lot with this bad ancient tactics. Not only Disney but all streaming services.

So let me get this straight, you ALREADY have to be a paying Disney+ subscriber, and ON TOP OF THAT, you have to pay $30 to watch the movie?

You can't just pay $30 to watch it by itself like people did with the Trolls movie a while back?

What a blatant and ridiculous cash grab. Sadly I think many people will fall for it and Disney will make a fortune, because people are so starved for new content during this pandemic and those who are still gainfully employed likely have a lot of extra cash from not being able to.. well, do anything. :(

You are literally mad because they made a product people want to buy.

They are a business, they are allowed to charge an amount they feel people will pay to enjoy their product.

Mulan PVOD is being only hosted on Disneys own service therefore there is no middleman grabbing profits. If they get 6 million (10 % of subscribers) buying the PVOD that will earn $180 Million.
This exactly!

When I saw this post about Disney charging $30 for access, the other shoe dropped for me regarding where Disney+ fits in their corporate strategy. Makes you realize how Disney is playing the long game here, positioning themselves for the next 20-30 years.

Cinemas were already having problems, and this shows why Disney wants to own and control its own world-wide platform for streaming. If they control the full "retail" dollar/yuan/yen/euro revenue spent, less normal commissions ( to Apple, etc.), they can hit their break even return (on movie production) a lot faster.

So my monthly subscription just allows me to be able to buy/rent a "premiere" movie? Laughable. You get so many great movies on Netflix as a part of the monthly.

$30 movies are the beginning of the end for theaters. This is what they need to make what they get at the box office - but COVID has changed it all.

They gotta know that $30 is high, and will result in piracy. I know it will happen each and every time, but there's a tipping point where people will pay vs. download. I don't think $30 is unreasonable to avoid a trip to the movie theater, but I'm just sayin. I have an Atmos surround sound 4K movie theater with 135" silver screen. I have been waiting for this for years.
Disney usually sells 4K UHD BDs for $29.99 when first available, eventually they reduce in price after 2 months to $24.99, and dip to less around Black Friday, or some other time period where they want to sell through stock. You are buying premium content in this instance as a alternative to being able to see it in a theater for your locations. This is a one time experiment. The price reflects access to it as long as you are a subscriber.

Netflix doesn’t get new releases except what they bought from studios. But Disney + is now the source of new releases from their suite of studios. Some Disney content will rotate occasionally to other streaming services after its return for a period of time from Disney +. 4K streaming of Disney titles will still be from MoviesAnywhere (digital code) and Disney + (subscription). I personally will wait for the physical media.

People have commented on the demise of movie theaters over the years, but they evolve and will come back to continue being Hollywood’s primary revenue source. The pandemic has only temporarily slowed releases. People still enjoying getting out and being socially involved with movies you know.;)

So Apple gets 30% of this movie for doing absolutely nothing except allowing downloads of Disney’s app and processing a credit card charge at 2.9% ... Apple does not even host the servers that stream it!
Didn’t they also build the software and hardware to allow for Disney’s app to reside on?

Most people won’t want to watch this from a computer screen. I know I’m going to watch it on my TV via my Apple TV. Disney knows that most people will want to just buy from the couch instead of going through a computer browser to just to buy it and then move over to the TV to watch it.

Actually that’s probably the real reason for the $30 cost which is higher than the previous $20/$25 PVOD rentals/purchases. They priced it to combat the various commission charges on Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon, PlayStation, etc.

Not much different than the box office split with theaters. Disney provides the content and the theaters/Apple & others provide the customer.

this is why I pirate.

Disney is already too rich to be charging a few twice than a movie ticket.
That’s a lame attempt at justifying criminal behavior.

Besides, this is way cheaper than a movie ticket. A movie ticket gets you ONE viewing by ONE person. This $30 lets as many people as you’d like see the movie as many times as they‘d like.

Aren't millions, if not more, already do that, and have been doing that for many many years, when they order delivery or takeout?

If anything, that just demonstrates that this isn't a new concept in any way shape or form and that many many people already do things of this nature without any issues.

You aren't getting all the shows and movies that are available on Disney+?

All they are doing is provide a means of paying for subscriptions via the credit account registered. Disney even provided the app and maintenance updates besides being the streaming host. I doubt Disney would accept 30% transaction. More likely 15% or less. After all Disney negotiates distribution of their movies to sell on Apple TV app.
