'Mulan' to Be Available as $30 In-App Purchase in Disney+ App on Apple Platforms

So you pay for a streaming service... to only then have to pay for an individual movie? Not sure if they thought that business model through...

Maybe if they added a higher tier streaming service with early access.
Did you not read any of the dozens of posts that explained the "business model"?

Here's an example of said business model that has been around for years -- ever seen (or paid for and watched) any major boxing sports event between two big boxing rivals? That is easily $60+ on top of the Showtime or HBO or whatever service it is shown on. Personally, I'd never pay $60 or $100 to watch a boxing match, but like dozens have said here, for a family of 4, $30 is a good deal to watch a movie.

Disney's upcoming movie "Mulan" will be available for purchase in the Disney+ app on iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV, as noted by an FAQ on Disney's website highlighted by Deadline.

On September 4, Disney+ subscribers can purchase "Mulan" for $29.99 in the Disney+ app on platforms owned by Apple, Google, and Roku. "Mulan" is what Disney is calling a "Premier Access" movie, which is not included in the standard $6.99 per month Disney+ purchase price.

According to Disney, paying the $29.99 fee will allow Disney+ subscribers to access "Mulan" before it comes available through the standard Disney+ subscription service. Disney has not yet said when "Mulan" will be available without the $30 purchase.

Disney previously said that "Mulan" would be an additional purchase, but had not made it clear if Disney+ subscribers could purchase it from all platforms that offer the Disney+ app. After paying the $30 for "Mulan," Disney+ subscribers can continue to watch it as many times as they want, but a Disney+ subscription must be maintained to access the movie.Apple will likely receive a standard cut of the purchase price of the movie when it is purchased through the Disney+ app on Apple's devices as it will be available as an additional in-app purchase option.

"Mulan" has been moved to a digital release because many theaters across the United States remain closed at this time. Disney pushed back the release date for the "Mulan" several times, but ultimately decided to experiment with a $30 purchase price for the film rather than further delaying it.

It looks excellent, but I’ll wait until it and the next season of the Mandalorian comes out before I will re-subscribe. Zero chance we’re going to pay $30 for a movie.

Disney+, Apple Music etc have largely reduced the torrenting scene to an afterthought by being affordable and easy to get. I don’t consider +$41AUD affordable, and the torrent will be easy to get.
I don’t think they’ve hit the $weet $pot to avoid pirating.

People who pirate movies etc will always pirate no matter if the cost was $5, $10, $15, or $20+

This is easy to get legal access to, and for families that were going to go to the theaters and watch it anyway a better deal for them $30 to watch it as many times as they want, can pause rewind, have easy access to subtitles should they choose. Yes you have to be a Disney+ subscriber but the audience Disney is targeting already likely has that (and probably are on the annual plan or like me got in on the 3 year founders circle deal)

if you don’t like the price you can wait a few months and buy the Blu-ray if having it physically makes you feel less butthurt or waita few more months and it will be included on Disney+ like the original plan for the movie was.

Mulan was never intended for a Disney+ premiere and is a premium title. It’s Disney’s choice to try and recoup there losses this way instead of just writing off what was a billion dollar box office movie pre-COVID and giving it away free to entitled people. They already gave you Artemis Fowl, Hamilton, and now the One and Only Ivan for free. So thank you Disney. Thank you for giving me the choice to see Mulan on September 4th in the safety of my own home and as many times as I want instead of having to risk going to a theater on a future undetermined date.

I’m on the fence on this. $30 is pretty steep but as a family of 4. That’s usually 1/3 of what a usual movie theater visit would cost. Plus I can pause and rewatch it if I so want to.

I agree. The only thing missing is the big screen experience, and I bet Disney expects some % of purchasers will still go see it in the theater.

I've been looking forward to this movie for a long, long time now. However, it's $35 CAD and at that price, no thanks.

You get to "own" it until you cancel Disney Plus. So in other words, you are paying $30/$35 for a rental. Or you can subscribe to it forever for just $6.99/$8.99 a month.

One thing the mouse knows how to do is make money.

Let's draw it up another day, a stores like Costco or Sam's Club have membership fees to go inside of the store, and you get to purchase items that they sell. Think of the store membership fees as your D+ subscription and buying Mulan as something you'd buy in store.

I get your point, but just to be a pendantic jerk (after all, this is the internet), you do not have to be a member to shop at Costco, all you need is a Costco Gift Card that a member buys for you. That will get you in and yo can shop to your hearts content. Great option if you have a kid away at college; they can stock up on some items and split the costs of others as needed. Not sure if that works for Sam's.

The point about family viewing is well taken, especially since going to see it in the theater is not an option yet. if kids like it they can watch it over and over.

A family with 4 or 5 people will see this as a bargain.

This model isn't for everyone, but as I mentioned people with 4 or 5 people will see it as a bargain.
This is nothing like Costco because when you cancel Costco they do not take there products back until you sign up again. If they want to charge more for a release ASAP cool but to put it on Disney+ and the only way to watch it in the future is through Disney+ subscription is nothing like Costco. I personally don't care about this movie but if it was a movie I was wanting to watch, I could see it being worth it to spend more on iTunes to get it right away.

I would have spent over a hundred dollars taking my daughter and a couple of her friends to the movie theater. This is a BARGAIN and I hope always a choice in the future.

Isn't this like twice the price of a theater ticket?
Yes, but I think that if 2 adult tickets and 2 or more kids tickets would cost a lot more than $30 so watching it at home is "cheaper" - But still having to access it through the Disney + subscription seems like they should "sell" this for $23, not $30

I would pay 30$ for a boxing fight between Mike Tyson and Kathleen Kennedy on Disney+. Go for it, Disney!

So let me get this straight, you ALREADY have to be a paying Disney+ subscriber, and ON TOP OF THAT, you have to pay $30 to watch the movie?

You can't just pay $30 to watch it by itself like people did with the Trolls movie a while back?

What a blatant and ridiculous cash grab. Sadly I think many people will fall for it and Disney will make a fortune, because people are so starved for new content during this pandemic and those who are still gainfully employed likely have a lot of extra cash from not being able to.. well, do anything. :(

Well it is so you can watch it before it is available. Price is a bit greedy because it wants to compete with cinemas, which normally costs less and it is more of an experience then just watching a movie. Silly imo, but they have to try I guess :D

Its being treated as a PVOD as a alternative to movie theaters not being opened in the states for your location. If you can wait long enough it will be out on 4K BD, or will eventually after a year or more be added as content for all subscribers.
<looks up PVOD>
Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease? I don’t get it.

So my monthly subscription just allows me to be able to buy/rent a "premiere" movie? Laughable. You get so many great movies on Netflix as a part of the monthly.

$30 movies are the beginning of the end for theaters. This is what they need to make what they get at the box office - but COVID has changed it all.

They gotta know that $30 is high, and will result in piracy. I know it will happen each and every time, but there's a tipping point where people will pay vs. download. I don't think $30 is unreasonable to avoid a trip to the movie theater, but I'm just sayin. I have an Atmos surround sound 4K movie theater with 135" silver screen. I have been waiting for this for years.

Everyone commenting that movie tickets only cost $10-15 should enjoy it while it lasts. There’s a high likelihood movie theaters don’t survive at all, the small ones are already on the verge of closing and the big chains like AMC might not make it past 2021.
The movie business is going through a seismic shift and George Lucas/Steven Spielberg predict it’s going to evolve into a niche business like broadway where a small number of people go to watch a theatrical release for $100-250 per ticket.
(Part of a talk warning kids at USC not to major in cinema)

There are plenty movies to be seen on HBO, Netflix, Prime while I’m waiting for Mulan will be available just for subscribers. This is not a race for me.

“Had anyone every gone out”... that’s the point, you’re not going out. Are you happy to pay restaurant prices for a meal at home?

Fair enough but we live in a different world ATM, so I’m happy to not whine about what companies gotta do and how they need to evolve no matter how much they make or what they’re worth.

Maybe this is their new normal for movie releases.

Maybe it’s temporary.

No one knows.

People freaking out over price, threatening piracy, etc are forgetting this will in time become a normal Disney+ title like all their other movies, Internet reactions are so silly sometimes.

i like disney+ but cmon dont make loyal subscibers pay extra
what other extras will we have to pay for next - ugh
on the otherhand i can wait if it will be free not too far in the future

I’m still not really getting these “live action” remakes, and my tween daughter isn’t interested either. Does Disney have any plans for any animation?
They do animation quite frequently, CGI, but still quite frequently, or are you referring specifically to hand drawn?

So Apple gets 30% of this movie for doing absolutely nothing except allowing downloads of Disney’s app and processing a credit card charge at 2.9% ... Apple does not even host the servers that stream it!

Disney should charge $40 through the app and $30 through disneyplus.com, but they won’t for some reason.

But what does "theatrical release" mean in this context? Simply that you'll have it sooner than people who are willing to wait for the exact same movie to be released for a reasonable price.

True, but that's sorta how it always has been. First of all, many places across the world (without Disney+) ARE releasing it in theaters. But truly I guess it depends on the the reason you see movies in theaters. If it's 100% the experience then sure this doesn't compare. But if it's because you're excited to see this new movie and to be able to talk about this new movie to people IRL or online, then this fits the same bill. If I'm being honest, I recognize that I'm biased, because in my more recent (adult) life I've completely gotten over the whole going to the movie experience. It's expensive, limited/pricey snacks, you can't pause it for bathroom breaks, you can't talk, and it takes time to drive to/from the theater. If I'm going to watch a movie, I'd much rather watch it from the comfort of my own home where I can watch it instantly, make whatever snacks, pause it, and invite as many people over as I want. So for me the draw of seeing a movie in theaters is simply "see the new, hot movie!" not "experience the new, hot movie on the big screen with surround sound!"

You don't own the movie. You unlock it as part of your subscription. If you cancel your subscription, you lose access.

I can only assume you meant to quote someone else.
