do I get to ”own it” at that price or is this a rental? I don’t like the thought of this as a precedent in streaming services
You get access to it while you have access to Disney+. It's along the lines of seeing it in a movie theater (although in this case you can still rewatch it too).

How much you wanna bet Apple gave Disney a discount to that 30% fee? Bet you anything Apple dropped it to 15%. Apple’s unfair, underhanded practices are becoming more obvious every day.

Umm it's really not a bad deal considering how this is a theatrical release and generally speaking if you go to the movies, you're going with at least 1-2 people which easily makes up for the $30/$35 price tag. Combine that will the fact that you can watch it limitless times during that month (if you don't want to maintain disney plus). Presumably it will eventually become part of the regular Disney+ catalog and/or be possible to rent/buy in the traditional sense (if this is still possible with disney movies).

You don't own the movie. You unlock it as part of your subscription. If you cancel your subscription, you lose access.

What on earth are you going on about.

Y’all are acting like $30 is an insane price, but like, what do you expect? A family of four could see this for much less than the price of four movie tickets in an actual theatre. They have to offset the cost of several people watching it together for a flat $30 fee.
So ppl like me. Who don’t have a family. Must help subsidize those who do. Got it lol.🤷🏻‍♂️😂

Isn't this like twice the price of a theater ticket?

You would think, given that digital distribution is easier, that prices would be driven downward.

Maybe ticket pricing can be variable? Starting high, dropping a little every week based on demand, until it settles in at the standard rental price?

So many interesting ideas.

So let me get this straight, you ALREADY have to be a paying Disney+ subscriber, and ON TOP OF THAT, you have to pay $30 to watch the movie?

You can't just pay $30 to watch it by itself like people did with the Trolls movie a while back?

What a blatant and ridiculous cash grab. Sadly I think many people will fall for it and Disney will make a fortune, because people are so starved for new content during this pandemic and those who are still gainfully employed likely have a lot of extra cash from not being able to.. well, do anything. :(

Yes, you paid your hardware (i.e. TV + AppleTV), you paid your ISP, you paid Disney+ for the distribution and you will pay Disney+ for the movie itself. But the popcorn is for free :)

The good news is that the 30% apple tax is included.

So ... is Apple taking a $9 cut, right?

*strains to keep a straight face*

Jungle Book was good, Lion King was brilliant. Aladdin wasn't as bas a critics claimed. The others have been meh. Certainly wouldn't pay £30 on top of the monthly subsciption when you don't actually own it. Why not just wait a few months and by the Blu-Ray/4K for less.

Has anyone ever gone out to dinner and ordered a cocktail for like $15? Maybe ordered 2? Maybe your bill was $100 for said dinner?

$36.99 for a movie might sound absurd at first but in realty, what were you paying to go to the movies?

and I know y’all bought that big tub of popcorn and soda for like $17

If you don’t want Disney+ just cancel before the renewal and watch all the content you want before that.

Mandalorian alone is worth that price.

OR don’t freaking watch it.

Disney+, Apple Music etc have largely reduced the torrenting scene to an afterthought by being affordable and easy to get. I don’t consider +$41AUD affordable, and the torrent will be easy to get.
I don’t think they’ve hit the $weet $pot to avoid pirating.

we have a lot of theaters around here, but they all feature the 45 minutes of nonsense before the opening reel. I’d happily pay extra not to see that.
The local IMAX (downtown Toronto) is one of the best in North America, and that’s where I had hoped to see Mulan, and for this movie I would have gone on my own. It’s inappropriate for my very young kids.

If it’s not at that IMAX, I usually don’t bother going to the theatre.

As for Disney Plus, I’m thinking of cancelling soon since we’ve already watched what we want to watch.

P.S. I keep getting autocorrected to iMac.

So if you cancel Disney+, you lose the movie too?
Yes. But you have the option of paying $6.99 a month to keep your subscription to that movie.

You don’t lose it, but you probably wouldn’t be able to access the movie if you stop being a subscriber.
Disney has not said that. AFAIK, all Disney has said is that once you pay for Mulan, you maintain access to it for as long as you have the subscription. If you cancel, then it’s gone, and they have never said you get it back by resubscribing.

“Had anyone every gone out”... that’s the point, you’re not going out. Are you happy to pay restaurant prices for a meal at home?

If 2 see it once its same like a cinema ticket so think its ok pricing to see it on cinema release date but from home..

Well, you can also lose the physical copies.

I think it would be more flexible and handy when you had physical copy at hands. Movie collector usually rip their own collection, leaving physical copies as backup source. Since digital files are already live on hard drive, it would easily backed up into other hard drive / network / computer. Once multiple back up created, losing physical copies are no longer headache. Physical copies are still outweighs benefits rather than internet accessed only media.

I collecting my own physical DVD/BD because it nicely showed in my shelves too.

I'm a HUGE Apple and Apple TV+ fan! However, I'm surprised that there's a premium to watch this movie. I'm surprised that its $30. I'm worried that we're going to see more and more slip into this Apple TV+ PLUS category. It's going to be VERY tempting for Apple. I hope they can resist.

Expect to see them try to test the upper end of people's willingness to pay. $40, $50?
