No, I think it’s you that’s confused.

Widespread: “found or distributed over a large area or number of people.”

Where’s the large number of people who have this device?

These were review units, as in not for sale yet.

Where's the large number of people who have the 2019 iPhone? Apple is domed.

Not going to be a good year for Samsung.
Well, the Fold is a $2000 phone, so whether it sinks or swims, it will be only a minuscule number for Samsung in terms of sales. Majority of Samsung’s sales come from their mid to low end models, and despite me disliking Samsung, they seem to be doing interesting stuff with the M and rebooted A series. It is still a PR nightmare for Samsung though, and their reaction of blaming those who remove a piece of plastic seems stupid. The device should’ve been durable enough without it.

If we are truly honest, the iPhone wasnt expressly needed by anyone nor was the iPad. People (consumers) have always been extremely close minded and always panic when they get offered a new product.

You're defining innovation as both a pro and con. I get that. But this is like someone taking the tires off your car, replacing them with rockets, and saying you'll get there faster. It MIGHT be true... but you might end up in a pile of totally broken car.

Anyone can look at this device and doubt that hinge is going to last. Hell, even Samsung came out and showed a video attesting to over hundreds of thousands of flips before any issues. They knew this would be a real concern, because when you look at it, you can already see deformations in screen at the hinge point.

In retrospect - and I bet Samsung is doing a LOT of retrospection at this point - they didn't do a flip, then place into a pocket filled with particles/fluff, then unflip, then flip, place into another pocket/bag, then unflip, etc, thousands of times ... they did it in a purely clean-room space. Sure... it'll last!

I can't quite put my finger on this, but that's where human intuition is more important. I trust that they do care, but I doubt they did the real world diligence. We're seeing evidence of that now.

Now this is an Apple forum, and I don't fault Samsung for trying. They deserve praise for being bold and attempting innovation. But I seriously question the need for a folding screen, as to the problem it solves. Sure no one asked for it, but we've got screens of all sizes -- ipod, iphone, ipad mini, ipad, ipad pro. Why exactly does it need to fold? Does it save space? Not really - I wouldn't or couldn't put it in my pocket, it's twice as thick as a phone. I'd prefer a smaller phone. Is it really big enough for a tablet, when unfolded? Well, again, maybe. And why couldn't I just have a small phone and a tablet and then save myself easily 500-1000 bucks in that process? What does this product offer that people crave that isn't solved more cheaply and safely in other products?

lol its not ready its a failure no innvoation. if apple did the same thing people will go mad it will be everywheere, on the news, youtube, twiter, facebook, all most every social platform.

So you are willing to say there will NEVER be folding screens? It’s just busted, it’ll get sorted out.

Lol! The problem is they just made it to fold in half. For a truly successful product like this, they should have designed it to fold into quarters.

I like the innovation but the execution is bad even for a first generation device. The front phone part looks terrible and the huge notch makes no sense. Would rather have one selfie camera on the front phone and a full screen on the tablet part.

Because failure elsewhere makes Apple exempt from criticism?

No.
Nice deflection buddy. Kind of missed the whole point.

Can you even call it a 1st generation device? Many people think it's more like a prototype.

Apple is a services company now and their latest services release, Apple news plus, is a failure. Half baked release not ready for prime time.
I like it. WSJ for a fraction of the price elsewhere, and the occasional magazine article that i find interesting thrown in for good measure.

Yes it will be a minuscule number but at 2,000, Samsung is relying on it to pad its profit margin its been a rough couple of quarters for them.

Bear in mind s10 sales has been tepid, when compared to last years s9 which just didn’t sell.

And you can tell from the new a series, Samsung is increasing prices across the board while discontinuing its low cost j-series. They need the profit margins the fold will contribute.

Huawei and the other Chinese oems have been eating Samsung’s lunch in the low and mid range with apple dominating high end.

“Foxconn Android unit Reportedly Shifts Away from Phone Manufacturing”
https://www.extremetech.com/mobile/289005-foxconn-reportedly-shifts-away-from-phone-manufacturing

“Nikkei says Foxconn has decided to transfer hundreds of engineers away from smartphone projects and put them on its automotive electronics project. While most of FIH Mobile’s income is from mobile devices, it’s not making as much in profit per unit. In 2018, FIH Mobile reported an $857 million net loss, which is the largest since it went public on the Hong Kong stock exchange in 2005.

FIH has reportedly seen smartphone orders fall dramatically in the last few years. Even highly successful brands like Xiaomi don’t need as many units as smartphone reach saturation. Whereas FIG previously had huge engineering teams to service three or four Android clients, it’s now using three or four teams for a single client. Sources tell Nikkei that Google’s contract to manufacture Pixel phones with FIH is the only profitable contract right now.”

You probably don’t like it because you haven’t tried it.

Which iPhone are you currently using, I always forget.

Uh, it’s supposed to go on sale April 26th. They might be review units, but they would be final production examples. As in, they’re not early prototypes or alpha units. Not even beta units. They’re production units. It’s too late for Samsung to change anything and have them ready in 10 days.

Edited: At this point in time the only changes they could make based on reviewer feedback would be software fixes.

Looks like everyone is just jumping on the samsung hate bandwagon without actually doing any research on the fact it was down to USER ERROR. Reviewers were pulling off a layer of the display that is was not meant to be removed.

Oh yeah, completely agree with you. Overall, Samsung’s mobile division actually is not doing great.

But hey, only Apple is doomed here, for some reason. :D

Folding a screen is kind of a stupid idea in the first place. Maybe this will make it all go away.

Nah, this is an upcoming trend that has been known about for a while, and is actually a pretty neat idea for those who are not uninspired.

The thought that I can have a nice big screen to use in portrait or landscape for normal phone usage, but then unfold the device to a bigger screen for games, videos, movies, video chats is pretty great conceptually.

If it was not supposed to be removed, why was it removable? Consumers have been trained to peel off any thin plastic coverings of their electronics.

Besides, I would expect the Fold to be more durable than this. I mean how can durability becomes zero when only a thin film of plastic being removed?

No. Not everyone pulled off the film.

The real failure on Samsung’s part is having an easy-to-remove film that looks like the removable film that comes on any new device with a screen as the primary protection of that screen.

Maybe, just maybe, they should have applied something that was, I don’t know, permanent?

The retail version has a clear label saying to NOT take off the layer but the reviewer units didn't have it.

This is a demo of the tech, which has been applied. In reality, even Apple already does folding screens. The OLED panel inside the X/XS are folded on their sides to achieve the bezelless look and hide the controller.

Uh, as people love to point out, Apple doesn’t make screens. They buy them from Samsung.

The real slap-to-the-face? iPhones with a Samsung screen always outperform Samsung phones with the same screen. The reason is Apple actually calibrates their screen and iOS actually has proper color management (unlike Androids half-finished version).

So no, they’re not “much better” at all.
Better by what definition?

Behind the Apple reality distortion field where it's perpetually 2016 maybe not.

No it wasn’t.

1) read the article. Not everyone peeled off the plastic
2) one of the people peeled it off because it was already peeling at the corner (defect)
3) as distributed to the reviewers, it did not have any warning not to peel it off
4) you shouldn’t be abler to peel it off.
