None of my Apple devices bend because I don't sit on them or try to bend them like the idiots who bought them did.
My iPad Pro is bent and my iPad Air 2 bent before it. I don’t care that my iPad Pro is bent because it works and it doesn’t effected the functioning of the device. I didn’t sit on it or mistreat it. I have Apple care and I could get it swapped out but I can’t be bothered as I don’t see it as a big deal.

I would hardly classify people using their iPads as they used to or how Apple shows themselves as idiots. The idiot would be the guy who claims no flaw and then puts his iPad in a steel case. Mark my words, the next version will have improved internal structures to make it way more sturdy like the iPhone 6s got.

Looks like everyone is just jumping on the samsung hate bandwagon without actually doing any research on the fact it was down to USER ERROR. Reviewers were pulling off a layer of the display that is was not meant to be removed.

Ah, no. Did you read the entire article? It states: “Not all of the reviewers with broken units removed the plastic film, however, so there are clearly multiple issues impacting the Galaxy Fold”.

There are problems aplenty with this device, protective film removed or left alone.

Just as cumbersome as oversized phablets, or fold-fails.

I am already wearing spectacles. There would be absolutely no cost to me at all.

And there’s nothing stopping people with perfect vision from using them either, the same way they wear shades to protect their eyes from the sun.

@Relentless Power

I am aware of Apple’s foldable phones patents, but I believe that Apple will likely never release one. It just comes with way too many compromises for a very limited benefit.

Make no mistake. Samsung is doing what they are because they have practically no presence in wearables, which is an area Apple is practically dominating. Samsung’s weak point is offering cohesive experiences, and as such, they can only rely more and more on their hardware chops in order to get around what is pretty much a nonexistent software and services portfolio.

At Apple product events, the takeaways often end up being related more to how Apple is setting the stage for the future. Certain announcements and features make much more sense when thinking about what Apple will likely unveil the following year.

At Samsung events, it's the opposite. There's no coherent vision when it comes to the future.

Seriously, Samsung is chasing up the wrong tree.

Apple isn’t doing a foldable phone because they don’t need to. That function (a larger display) is going to be fulfilled with a pair of AR glasses.

By this time next year Apple will possibly have released Glasses .. a clear path forward for nextgen UI.

Other device manufacturers will be nowhere with a similar wearable device.

And their foldable screen path will be dead.

You heard it here first.
Apple don’t need to make a foldable phone now. Being the only manufacturer of hardware that runs iOS they have luxury of sitting back and waiting to see what takes off before they commit to anything. The android OEMs are in competition with each other so they need to constantly be pushing out new technology.

No AirPower was not an ordinary charger, however the galaxy fold is also not an ordinary smartphone.

Did Apple release the Airpower? Did people spend money on it?

No.

So yeah there is a huge difference....the fact that Apple canned Airpower is just further validation that if a product doesnt meet the standards they set out, they are willing to scrap it instead of releasing a subpar product...

It’s not the quantity, but the quality (or the lack thereof).

This whole galaxy fold issue is happening precisely because Samsung rushed to be first with a price of tech that was clearly nowhere near ready for adoption.

Not at all dissimilar with the current situation here at Macrumours where we have critics rushing to be the first to hate on any piece of Apple news, and it shows as the comments on the first few pages are usually devoid of any substance whatsoever. Not surprising, because it takes time to digest the news and craft an informed and well-reasoned opinion.

Now you see the people who roasted Apple for not releasing AirPower rush to defend Samsung for releasing a clearly faulty product. But hey, it folds!

People love an underdog story, love to bash Apple, and they see nothing hypocritical with putting Samsung on the same pedestal as Apple until it is time to grade their products.

What's the solution? The bar needs to be raised for companies not named Apple. If a company is said to be outpacing Apple, that company deserves to have a bull's-eye placed on its back.

Until then, Samsung is no leader.
You were the one who used the comments number as a metric, not me.

Also, many people (me included) criticize apple because they care and want apple to release products with the same quality they used to make. The mac mini is a step in the right direction, let’s see if they fix the horrible keyboards and release a decent mac pro. Their phones are already wonderful in my book (maybe a bit overpriced).

As for the foldable phone, yes, this looks like a complete screw-up. I don’t care about it, I don’t really like samsung products nor do I need or want a foldable phone. While we’re at it, I don’t think we’ll ever see a foldable phone from apple in the near future for one simple reason: it would be thicker, and Sir Jony Ive would not allow it.

AirPower wasn't a charger at all. It never existed. It was an interesting idea that Apple couldn't make work.

People talk as if Apple had warehouses full of them but decided not to ship. They had a photoshop and some prototypes, and nothing more.

So you give Samsung a pass for releasing hardware that may not be fully baked but rag on and on and on about Apple?

Samsung is trying to revolutionise the industry like how Jobs did with the iPhone (Antennagate) and they are bound to run into some hitches along the way. It’s after all a unique one of a kind product. Apple is trying to shave off costs and reduce product quality to increase margins. Big difference.

Unless you hate glasses.

I remember reading about this and wondering.... WHY? Samsung has a killer 10 line, 3 devices which hardware wise make the iPhone X look dated (hello thick bezels). And then... this, looked half baked from day 1

This is what I mean about time travel, and why it's freakin' laughable that people think Apple has all this room to bust on other tech companies that are at least pushing the envelope of what's possible. In 2019. Not 2016.

That I can go to Apple's site right now and find a machine for $1300 freakin bucks with 8GB of RAM and not just a hard drive- but a 5400RPM hard drive! Where do you even still find those? Oh wait, perma-2016.

"Oh I'd just swap it out for an SSD..." no you won't. Just try taking one of those damn things apart without breaking the screen.
I have had 2 iMacs and it broke my heart to waste a good screen when you upgrade.
I don't think I could bring myself to buy another all in one.

It's a concept device, far from being suitable for real usage. People should be aware of that before purchasing a super-expensive concept.

Yes, it will probably be samsung that will get there first, or huawei. Yes, apple will be late to the party as usual. But right now, nobody has something really useful to offer.

Having a protective layer that looks like it is removable is uniquely dumb.

I'm guessing that layer is supposed to be removed, but Samsung is using it as an excuse for why the phones broke so soon. "You did something wrong as a user. You broke the phone…"

Be very cautious of a new product that the manufacturer is already looking to shift liability on.

When asked for a comment regarding the display issues with some Galaxy Fold screens, Samsung referred the matter to their newly hired outside consultant, a Mr. K Rogers who said this in relation to the matter:
‘You got to know when to hold them, how NOT to ‘Fold’ them, till the beta test period is done...’

Maybe it's just a few effected... Will see if this can be fixed as it's more the screen turning off is the issue

No but everyone bitched about Apple's lack of innovation and not jumping on this train when this was first announced... Now look at what happened.

I bitch about Apple's obvious lack of innovation, but I never wanted a foldable phone from them.

You can't put something that fragile out for the general public. People sit on phones all the time. Leave them in hot cars. Drop them. It's called 'life.' Samsung is going to regret this move in spades.

I've only just been able to stop myself laughing.

THIS IS WHY WE BUY APPLE BECAUSE THEY DON'T RUSH CRAP TO THE MARKET
Lol no it's not about rushing things out.. They wouldn't release If they didn't it was ready. Its a few review units that's failed. Will see if this is all units but right now it's only a few...

I'll be wrong, but i see folding phones going the way of 3D TV...

The concept of foldable phones was flawed right from the very start.

The Galaxy Fold isn’t a smartphone that happens to unfold into a larger device. Instead, Galaxy Fold is a small tablet that folds in half so that it can fit into your pocket. Having to unfold a tablet in order to use it (and then having to hold it again when you want to put it away) is not a good user experience.

I do believe there is a use case for flexible screens. It just won’t be for phones. Instead, I see a place for it on wearables such as smart watches and smart glasses which ironically don’t get bent much.

Here’s the reality facing Samsung. Samsung has been crushed by smartphone competition across the board. Their wearables strategy is a mess. In my view, Samsung is placing the wrong bets and it’s going to come back to hurt them.
