For sure, they have to address the issue. If they have already fixed it then they need to let people know that those were from an initial batch that was perfected afterward. Though I highly doubt that because why would they send faulty products to the people that have actual influence regarding how the product does.

They need to do something or this will be another Note 7 type fiasco. I would be super pissed if I bought a $2000 phone that lasted a few days.
You're right, they can't ship them if there is a defect

If its just a small amount of demo units then they can recover this

They weren’t going to sell that many anyway but the best thing for them to do is to cancel the release or at least delay it. If they release it and the displays start breaking it will be the note 7 all over again and this time I won’t give them a pass because they knew about the issue before they shipped.

Exactly. The tech isn't ready, push it back, state that you are reviewing the issue and are committed to quality, and focus on getting it right. Unfortunately, the damage is likely already done. Maybe their thought is to push this out and get to work on version 2 for an early 2020 release.

Samsung this week provided reviewers with Galaxy Fold devices for some hands-on time, and it appears the folding smartphone may be suffering from some serious flaws. Three of the reviewers who received a Galaxy Fold have already experienced failures, all of which focus on the display.

The Verge's Dieter Bohn says that his Galaxy Fold device broke after a random bulge appeared on the display, perhaps from a piece of debris that had gotten into the hinge. The debris, or whatever the bulge was, pressed into the display hard enough to break it.

Bohn says that he did not mistreat the phone, doing "normal phone stuff" like putting it in a pocket and opening and closing the hinge.Similarly, CNBC's Steve Kovach shared a video of his review unit displaying a flickering, failing screen after just a single day of use.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman also ran into a catastrophic display failure. His Galaxy Fold is broken and unusable, appearing to feature some of the same screen failures as Kovach's unit.

In Gurman's case, he says that there was a protective layer on the screen that is not supposed to be removed, but this was not communicated to him. He took it off, which may have contributed to the problem. Well-known YouTuber Marques Brownlee says that he did the same thing because there was no warning in the box.

Not all of the reviewers with broken units removed the plastic film, however, so there are clearly multiple issues impacting the Galaxy Fold. Three broken review units that failed within a day or two does not bode well for the device at all. It's not known if reviewers received a bad batch of the device or if units going out to customers will experience the same issues, but anyone considering a purchase should be aware of these failures.

Samsung's Galaxy Fold costs a whopping $1,980, which is a sensationally high price even for a device that works. Right now, Samsung is accepting pre-orders for the Galaxy Fold on carrier sites, and the first retail units are expected to be available to customers on April 26.

Told you so. Folding phones will simply not work well with current technology. At some point in the future, maybe. No time soon though.

Clearly the tech is not there yet. They should have shown this a a prototype or a concept of the future...something they're working towards.

NOT something they have to ship now.

No matter whether it ends up being viable in the future or not, WORKING folding devices are by far the coolest thing I've seen in tech since the original iPhone. The idea is sound, perhaps not as a be-all-end-all, but as an additional form factor out there.

You have to at least give props to Samsung and Huawei for trying, and showing that it CAN be done, even if not today.

Isn't it still courage when you try and fail?

Yes they said that.

You said this.

They never said they were terrible, that was you.
No in a later post they said colour management was terrible
Oh?

https://www.cultofmac.com/512485/iphone-x-boasts-best-smartphone-display-ever/

Which backs up my posts:

  • An iPhone with the same generation screen as a Samsung phone outperforms the Samsung version.
  • Android has terrible color management meaning that gorgeous screen in any Samsung phone is wasted due to not being able to render all content properly.

It’s like have a $10K audiophile speaker system in your home. The speakers may be the best sounding ever, but if all you’re doing is listening to MP3s at a measly 64k bit rate then it doesn’t matter.

Yes they said that.

You said this.

They never said they were terrible, that was you.

In a later post they said “
  • Android has terrible color management meaning that gorgeous screen in any Samsung phone is wasted due to not being able to render all content properly”

And I said that displaymate doesn’t say that Samsung displays are terrible.

Yes the color management profiles are terrible on Samsung phones compared to iPhones, that’s because apple automatically manages the profile depending on whatever content is being displayed. Samsung’s displays can’t do that.

But you claimed he stated that “Samsung displays are terrible” which is being disingenuous.

Companies have spent years getting to a point where there is little to go wrong with your phone.

Waterproof.
Less holes to get bunged up.
Sealed in batteries / No sliding cases

These folding phones are multiple points of failure waiting to happen. Should have sunk the development money into AR Phones.

But this is old. The S10 plus has already surpassed the screen on the Xs max and Apple have only been making phones with Oled displays for 2 years.

Displaymate did not say that the displays on Samsung phones are terrible as you put it. They’ve been rated as excellent by displaymate.

Also after the Xs max came out and was given the best display ever rating the pixel 3 Xl came out and that was given the best display ever rating. All 3 displays are made by Samsung.

The fact is the displays on Samsung phones and iPhones with OLED are both very good.

Please.

I ALREADY said that DisplayMate rated the S10 higher, because it has a newer version of their OLED screen. I also said that when the next iPhone launches this fall using the latest Samsung OLED screen that it will again steal the best smartphone display crown from the S10. Just like last year where the Note 9 was declared the best display, only to lose that title a month later to the iPhone XS. This is how things go - companies leapfrog each other as technology advances.

Did you even read the Anandtech quotes I provided? A Samsung S10 can't even display content from two different color spaces on the screen at the same time. iPhones have been able to for years now. What's the point of A) having a really good camera and B) having a really good screen if you can't properly view content in the correct color space?

BTW, DisplayMate only tests the screen/panel. They do the equivalent of testing an expensive speaker system in a lab and publishing the results (numbers). That audiophile speaker may get a perfect score in the lab, but if it's connected to a cheap stereo system it doesn't matter how good they test.

FACT: iPhones, Samsung phones and Google phones all have excellent OLED screens/panels.
FACT: Android has a GARBAGE version of color management which makes having such a good screen kinda pointless if it can't display content properly.
FACT: iPhones have had a full, proper version of color management baked into the OS for many years now, which is why they will always render content better than a Samsung or Google phone.

And I really wanted this whole thing to work, but I knew it was too soon. It's in all the futuristic movies, so it's gotta happen right?

Just users not folding it right.
Perhaps now Samsung will understand why Apple and others have not released foldable displays, the technology is not ready for consumers, still at a prototype stage and Samsung just likes to be the big guy with egg on their face, the experts and industry told Samsung this would happen but they are more about flashy phones than products well made and designed, yes they will at times be issues with products that were overlooked but this was a problem that was clearly going to be an issue but they ignored it just to try get one up on Apple, stop thinking of yourself and think about your customers

I prefer that too, although the screens being foldable also makes them scratchable
Yeah. I wonder if Apple's ultra precision manufacturing experience could benefit them here. Imagine a device that only has a screen on the front and back, but when you open it, on the outside the displays meet in the middle and snap into place. Sturdy locking pins could engage to keep it rigid. Their precise manufacturing would make a seam hardly noticeable. It would be difficult to pull off but until newer materials are developed it might be the best way forward for the next 5 years.

It will likely eventually come to market, but the tech just isn't ready yet. No reason to come out with junk just to be first. As of right now, whether it breaks or not, the product doesn't add any value. If a company can create a product that is better than the phones and tablets than we have today, maybe it will have shot.

What?!?

Are you saying bragging rights are of no value? ;-)

He's got his apple sheep glasses on... No display comes close to samsung and its likely never changing.

Apple do a great job surg their screens but still not as good as Samsung displays

Nope. Utterly wrong. Screens can be as pixel perfect as you want but Colour management and refresh rates are shocking on Samsung and Android phones. I used to be a Visual Technician for the BBC and have done independent tests for Netflix, BBC and a number of others. Also they don't have true colour profiles per application on Android so a video might look fine on one may look shocking on another.

Oh and the Apple sheeple comment is just childish and immature and makes people look like Cretins You do know that don't you?

All these people are bitching and calling this DOA, people need to give it hope and be excited for it, hopefully this will mean more big companies including Apple will look into this technology. This is a product 1st of its kind and its going to have bugs and issues but that only means they can improve and adapt them. Remember the first iPad was just a gigantic iPod Touch, now look at it its basically and computer with one of the best stylus support ever. I have my pre order in and I'm excited for my fold to come in next week, I know the risks and I know it has a greater than normal chance of having to be replaced but I'm still extremely excited to have one of the first foldable phone/tablet .
Listen to you next week

The problem is that there’s no way Samsung will fix those for free unless you have their device insurance - which doesn’t exist outside the US.

Those devices are lent to reviewers! They are not bought with money and you can’t buy one now! You can preorder and be shipped in 9 months!

But since this news try to defame Samsung ... they didn’t specify this!

The first two sentences clearly identify that these are review units.

At least they are trying something new. Apple still has a problem with a regular keyboard. :)

You can argue they are trying something new and innovative, too... certainly there are no other laptop keyboards built in this way. While I have yet to experience issues with my late 2016 MBP keyboard – the original problem child, and knock on wood – it is annoying to know it could go south on me. I actually really like the low travel on the new keyboards, just wish they were problem free!

No he said android colour management was terrible. The last time I checked Samsung was an android phone. This has nothing to do with you anyway.
