Are the review models early prototypes??

Will Samsung actually ship these on April 26 2019?

Will this wind up being another disaster for Samsung

Time will tell we’ll all know the answers in about a week or so

I think it depends on the rest of the review units. If there are no further reports of failures I think they will try and push ahead with the release. However if there are more reports of failures then I think they might delay the consumer release.

Folding screens are the future. See you in 5 years.
I agree.

Flexible screens are the future.

They just don't belong on a phone.

My personal bet is wearables, like smartwatches and smartglasses.

Which incidentally, Apple has a strong presence in, while Samsung has little.

Nobody’s seen the AR glasses so I don’t think we can say Apple have a strong presence in the field or not.

Smart watches: Samsung have a long history in the field although Apple have the better device. Samsung are second to Apple, although admittedly far behind in the smartwatch market.

I think in any case Apple will have the vision but the technology (displays) will have to be developed by someone else. However having said that we don’t know how Apple’s partnership with LG will pan out long term. They may surprise us all.

I wonder how flexible displays would work on a smart watch or glasses as they are already small devices.

Should be called 'Samesung Grenade':
1) Peel off screen with teeth
2) Throw at enemy
3) Wait for explosion
[doublepost=1555664392][/doublepost]
No. Complaining that:
1) The phone-mode aspect ratio is weird and awkward
2) In tablet mode there is a great big noticeable crease in the middle of the viewing area
3) It has the biggest ugliest notch of all time
4) What does this do better than than a large form phone?
5) Folded it looks like crap
6) Design flaw with the screen protector that isn't a screen protector
7) No SD card slot unlike most other Android devices
8) Its $2000 for a half-baked, awkward, design-flawed device that doesn't have a raison d'être other than "look! it folds!"

What the hell are you talking about, issues aside all the reviewers who have actually used the Galaxy fold are very excited about it and all feel it is the future of smartphones. I remember Apple fans making fun of the phablet form factor too. Samsung are not perfect but they push the industry forward, if not for them you would still be using a 4" phone with an LCD screen.

You mean reviewers who have probably been paid off by Samsung no doubt. I watched MKBHD’s follow up video today and it was painful seeing him try so hard to explain why the galaxy fold screen issues were not Samsung’s fault.

I also see people keep bringing up the matter of phablets and it’s frankly starting to get irritating.

Samsung had one hit. One.

In this respect, Samsung peaked right before Apple unveiled larger iPhones. The company has not been able to find its footing since.

And it is my belief that Samsung is pushing the industry forward in all the wrong ways. It’s not clear why someone would want to carry a small tablet that folds into a suboptimal smartphone instead of just carrying a much better smartphone. Especially when I can get an iPhone and an iPad and still have money left over for Airpods for the price.

If you are interested in the future of screens, the most valuable screens are going to be found on our wrists and placed in front of our eyes. Like I said before, I am willing to wager that Samsung’s vision is off. They are placing the wrong bets in all the wrong areas and it’s going to come back to hurt them.

My suspicion is that Samsung doesn’t actually think the Fold is going to sell. Instead, Samsung is more interested in simply having foldable displays turn into something so that other smartphone and tablet manufacturers begin to buy foldable Samsung displays. Samsung stands to make more money being a foldable display supplier than a smartphone manufacturer selling tablet / smartphone hybrids.

Samsung has this cool piece of tech which they are struggling to find a viable use case for, vs Apple which starts with the end in mind, then works backwards to deliver that experience. And if a cool piece of tech like foldable screens doesn’t fit the bill, then they won’t use it, no matter how cool or awesome it may be.

That’s the difference between an engineering company and a design-led one.

We're now into day 3 of the Fold apocalypse and the number of confirmed broken phones is still at 4...

Yeah ok everyone was paid off that's what it is
I think you are irritated because the truth actually hurts. But don't worry it's ok, I'll tell you now Apple play it safe but im certain thier version of the foldable phone will be extremely good. Any real fan of technology gets excited to see things like folding phones, loosen up a little!

Folding a screen is kind of a stupid idea in the first place. Maybe this will make it all go away.
No it's not. Don't be ridiculous.
At some stage, (might even be 30 years away), they'll have the tech to do this well. Why would taking something that's 3 inches and folding it into a space that's three inches, and still have it perfectly useable be a ridiculous concept?

What was a stupid idea is releasing it now when it's not ready. The same amount of stupid in that idea is the same amount of stupid that's in your post.

I am irritated because Apple is constantly being graded on a curve, while the rest of the competition keeps getting a free pass.

People love an underdog story and love to hate on Apple even more and these two factors (combined with a general misunderstanding of how Apple works) often leads them to constantly hype up everything the competition is doing that Apple isn’t, while downplaying everything that Apple is doing (and especially doing well in).

Remember how voice assistants were supposed to be the future of computing? Today, we hardly see smart speakers being mentioned anymore. Google assistant and Alexa are largely relegated to playing music and answering trivia questions. Hardly the glorious future the “experts” were proclaiming, but hey, they got their 15 seconds of fame penning clickbait articles of how Apple was doomed for the sake of cheap views.

If this foldable phone were released by Apple, every slightest defect (real or perceived) would have been blown up by the media. You wouldn’t be seeing the chilly response we are today, much less people casually dismissing it as “the price of innovation”. Replace the “Samsung” in this thread with “Apple”. How many thousands of responses do you think we would be at now? Just look at the number racked up in the AirPower thread, and that was for a product that was never even released!

And if Samsung is indeed the “leader of innovation” everyone is making them out to be, then I think it’s only reasonable that they held to the same level of scrutiny that Apple is, if not stricter. So many people here like to tout how companies like Samsung and amazon are more innovative than Apple, yet don’t hold their products to the same level of scrutiny.

Specs are just the means. The user experience is the end. A simple lesson that Apple keeps teaching, one that took me long enough to grasp, and which others keep ignoring. I too am excited by technology, but I have since learnt not to just blindly chase technology for technology’ sake.

I think the haters here would be wise to heed this lesson as well.

Don't make Apple out to be hard done by, they are a juggernaut. When companies become as big as Apple they are often victims of thier own success. Apple play things very safe these days as they can't afford to push the limits as like you said, if they released a foldable phone and it had the same issue as the Galaxy fold it would be catastrophic for them. What I'm saying is we need companies like Samsung that take risks and push the industry forward, Apple did the exact same thing before they became so big.

This misconception that Apple is somehow playing safe or not innovating is because people simple don’t understand how Apple works, not because Apple has lost its way.

What I'm saying is we need companies like Samsung that take risks and push the industry forward, Apple did the exact same thing before they became so big.

And nothing is stopping Samsung from doing so.

But this double standard has got to stop. Either Samsung is a leader like Apple and therefore subject to the same exacting standards that Apple is, or admit that Samsung is nowhere near Apple’s level, if they are to keep giving Samsung’s every slipup a free pass.

I am just saying that you can’t have it both ways.

It's got nothing to do with the way Apple works, it's just how a company as big as Apple typically operates, safe and calculated. Obviously not a bad thing as indicated by thier success. However you are still missing my point, naturally a company that is taking risks is going to be given more leeway so the "double standards" are not going to change anytime soon. At the end of the day the consumers Win, competition is healthy. It's just a pity people get so caught up with brand loyalty and lose sight of what really matters and that is the technology we have these days.

I don't really see it that way. I think we will hit a saturation point with screens, we are almost there. Too many screens, big screens, constantly in our faces, this isn't good for people. Folding screens, at least in a "phone" sense really only accomplishes a larger screen in a smaller package. I think people will start to revert back to less intrusive means through wearables that focus on limited, but meaningful interactions. I am sure folding screens will have their place, but I am not sure I see it as the future, or used in phones - wearables and AR feel more like where we will head as a society and a logical place for flexible screens. As of right now, the Galaxy Fold is a gimmick that doesn't add any real value over what we already have.

There are TWO product failures I am aware of. There are TWO caused by user error (even if Sammy should have been more clear re: the screen protector thingy).

That's 2 too many, but Armageddon? Eh. We'll see if they need to adjust the release date. I'd be pissed if I paid $2K in advance for this.

Is it really that hard to believe that some people would actually like the fold and find it at least interesting?

Believe it or not, I know a few people that are interested in that. I’m personally not interested. We will see how people’s behavior change as it gets refined.
