Buying 5+ phones in a single year is not normal behavior. I'm not being sarcastic here. They have medication for this.

and I'm so glad this site has an ignore button.

Buy every phone they have and just keep buying and buying and buying but don't ever keep any. Just keep buying and buying because that's totally normal.
That’s just mean. That’s also a gross misrepresentation of what is happening here. I don’t know how old you are but sometimes people reach a certain stage of life where the paradigm they were used to operating in changes dramatically and it takes awhile to find one’s footing again. It’s not like she or I are ordering multiple phones to try and see which color we like best. We are trying to find what’s going to work best for us going forward because old formulas/criteria aren’t cutting it anymore.

I'm 42 and I've dealt with OCD and treated with medication. Buying a phone and swapping it out over and over and over is a sign of another issue. Apple offers 7 phones. Buy each one and be done with it.

That's a a harsh and overly judgmental statement. Many of us here love tech, it's a hobby. So far in 2020 I've had a Pixel 4 XL, Samsung S20+, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone SE 2020, and now the 12 Pro. Especially with Covid, it makes isolative life more interesting. There are far worse hobbies and ways to waste money.

*Edit- buying and returning multiple phones in a year, I agree with you on that to some degree. As stated above, many people have valid reasons for returning several phones. But buying phones and enjoying, and then buying other phones, I see nothing wrong with that.

PICK A PHONE. What other hobbies involve buying something and exchanging it numerous times?
Two separate points here. Chronic buying and swapping, yes that's not good. Which is what you're getting at I think. Buying multiple phones, enjoying, selling, and then buying other phones, that's perfectly fine in my opinion. I didn't exchange any of the phones I mentioned aside from a defective S20+. I used them and sold them and bought another phone.

Well I’ve been buying Apple phones for the last, oh IDK 10 years or so, and I had only ever returned ONE before this year. ONE. This has not been normal practice for me. I have not ordered 2 every year to try and make up my mind and then send one back. And being indecisive during a short period of time because needs change does NOT require medication.

But I agree about one thing, and that is being thankful for the ignore button.

You’re not the boss of anybody here. Even if you’re a psychiatrist you’re not qualified to diagnose a person you’re not personally treating. If you don’t like what she’s doing then skip the topic. It’s a very large forum with many discussions. No need to be rude and lord it over someone because YOU don’t like something. She’s not returning dozens of phones over a scratch like some people do, which actually is their perogative until Apple says otherwise.

And the discussions her recent experiences have engendered have brought to light information and comparisons that have been actually helpful.

Having a phone is not a hobby for me. Buying phones is not a hobby for me. Deciding what features are most important going forward when your needs are changing is just reality. For some it’s super easy - always was for me, but my needs are changing, and I’m trying to decide on device A or B at this point. It’s a discussion forum, and I’ve appreciated people’s input. You don’t have to read the thread.

That little bit makes a noticeable difference for sure when you’re holding it up for long periods. I’m still on the fence today. I ordered myself another SE (my granddaughter already confiscated the other one), but cancelled. It’s just a da** phone - just cannot figure out why I am so flipping indecisive. There are just certain things about each phone I love, and I can’t decide which are my priorities.

I did notice that looking at it for a longer time last night made me feel like my eyes were burning, but IDK if it was strain, or if I was just tired.

I have to decide soon. My ATT return window is nearly up.

I’m thinking on staying with the SE, the Mini hype is going down and the SE is fast, light and cheap!

Of course on November 5 the hype starts again haha

Switched from 12P to my SE2020 today and I was ‘ahhhh this feels great!’

I’m sure if I pick up the SE I’ll feel the same, but I’m trying to make myself adjust to the 12.

Same what I don’t like about the 12 is the non compatibility. I prefer a smaller device but would like a smaller device with a larger screen. I hope the mini meets my expectations.

I look forward to y'alls report on the mini. I for one enjoyed reading this thread so much I'm following it now.

Ignore those who like to rain on other people's parades. This has been a fun read and I look forward to following as time goes on. Thank you.

I’m not planning on trying the mini. Maybe I should, but I just don’t think I need to throw another phone in the mix.

Typing/texting on the 12 is much better than the SE, and I assume it would be much better than the mini as well. The display on the 12 is great, and the camera on the 12 is great.

The SE has size/comfort going for it (as I mentioned, I really prefer the rounded edges), and of course the easy one-handed use.

I actually prefer Touch ID on the phone, but I am getting used to the Face ID and swiping gestures again, and I know that’ll wind up being a wash once it becomes the norm.

So that’s what I’m weighing, and I’m making a decision by tomorrow. ;-p

I for one have enjoyed reading your post regarding your decisions with your phone. Even though I only use Max sized phones, I respect other people’s opinions and preferences on what they are looking for in a phone.

LOL well even when I read back over them sometimes I realize how ridiculous it is to be this indecisive. It must just have something to do with 2020, and things being so weird you just don’t want to make a wrong decision. I have no idea, but this is not the norm for me. I’m sometimes indecisive in a store, but once I make up my mind, I don’t usually change it.

Of course I DO realize that were my Apple store open during any of this time, I likely wouldn’t have gone through any of the indecisiveness earlier in the year. I just couldn’t put my hands on the dang phones without ordering them. Heck, our Apple store STILL isn’t open.

I find it interesting, as I’m debating between my current 12 Pro and the 12 Mini. Your approach has me thinking it through differently. I’d love the compact pocketability and one-handed use, but typing on the narrower screen can be harder. I’ve had an iPhone X for almost 3 years though, and so I’m concerned that adjusting back to a smaller screen could be tough.

The indecisive part of me wishes the choice was more clear.

Yeah like there’s that part of me that longs for the days when there was only the one, although I do realize it’s great for everyone to be able to get what works best for them.

Right now I’m leaning towards keeping the 12. It’s what I wanted as far as getting more screen without much more weight. I’ll learn to live with the flat edges again, and having to use 2 hands sometimes.

I’ve been playing with the camera a good bit and trying to see if I’m really getting better pics too though, because that’s a big perk for keeping the 12, and if it’s not really gonna be much difference for my usage, that could sway my decision.

Well you’re def not the only one struggling with the decision on the 12. There is a 9 page thread about ppl returning for one reason or another. I’m on the fence as well. My only concern is the size. I’m coming from a 7 because I did not want to jump to the XR/11 size and didn’t want to drop 1k on a phone. On paper, the 12 is about the same width as my 7 in a case, but it feels wider, and the screen is wider. The extra height affects the balance when moving my hand down to reach the lower corner. And the scaling is larger. It is taking time to get used to. But, I am running out of time to make a decision. And I’m not sure how smooth the AT&T return would be. It doesn’t help that there were no hands on reviews with the 12 and the 12 mini this year.

AT&T returns aren’t too bad, although if you bought/return in store you do have to pay a restocking fee. I order online, and returns don’t require a fee. It takes a few days for them to get the phone, but I haven’t had any issues. I‘ve only returned a couple devices to them, but it went smoothly.

I’m basically coming from the same (SE2), but I had an 11 before that. I was hoping/expecting to basically get an 11 in a more manageable weight/size, which I did - that’s pretty much exactly what the 12 is. The only thing is, I had really gotten attached to the size of the SE2 in the meantime.

I think the extra height balances the weight pretty well and keeps the phone from feeling like a brick, but it does affect the one-handed use I was appreciating after having big phones for years.

I really don’t want to play musical phones again, so for me it’s between this 12 and my SE.

Maybe having 2 phones would be the answer. The 12 for your main phone and the SE for reading in bed or other times when the smaller size works better for you. No need for another phone line if the SE could be limited to home use and when/if desirable to take the SE out you could switch sims.

I know some do that, but I just don’t feel like there’s enough difference in the weights/sizes to warrant having both.

You mentioned earlier in the thread you have changing needs for a phone etc. What are your specific needs? Surely there can't be that many that it's taken months to decide? I thought I was bad with being indecisive but you seem very much the same. This isn't an "attack", it's just an observation.

This is how bad I am...

- Usually want the latest phone because it has the latest tech and will be future proof
- Then realise it'll only be the latest phone until next September and I'll want to upgrade again
- Then I'll think "it's only a phone, it can get damaged/lost/stolen and there are more important things in life that spending lots of money on on one" so I'll look for the cheapest 'latest looking' model e.g. an X or XR.
- Then I'll miss the pocketable size/one handed use so think about the 12 Mini or going back to a smaller iPhone.
- Then I'll miss the physical home button and TouchID, so I'll look for the cheapest TouchID phone that runs the latest iOS (e.g. 6S or SE1)
- Then I'll want something newer that's "future proof" so I go back to thinking the SE2 is a good option
- Then I miss the swipe gestures and ease of FaceID so think about going back to an 11 Pro/12 Pro or get the 12 Mini.

I've had maybe 8 different phones this year.

I'm trying to get out of the mentality of thinking phones are important, because they aren't. We spend too much time with/on them and we shouldn't.

Right now I'm in the frame of mind of going back to the SE2 - it'll be future proof for at least a couple more iOS versions, is quick, cheap (ish), and pocketable/one handed. Only downside is battery life.

*sigh*.
