Why were you banned?

Name-calling. I suggest you don't do it. You know how hard it was for me these last two weeks? You have no idea. It's like being told to shut up and then losing your voice. MacRumors is my favorite website.

I've been running stock now for the longest time (around a week :) ) since I have had my iPhone. It's great....no lag;)

Forget everything I said. It turns out that those processes come up a different random times depending on if they're needed or not. Installing Cydia does not leave anything running in the background, it was just a coincidence. A guy named "viddy" helped me figure this out on an IRC channel.

Now that I know Cydia doesn't affect anything, I'm gonna re-jailbreak just for the customization and be very careful about what I install on Cydia.

However, I still don't like SBSettings and MobileSubstrate crap. You guys can keep that, I'll pass, thanks.

Yea, I didn't even know I had SBSettings installed for a while but realized my phone was going pretty slow. The only MobileSubstrate things I use are Backgrounder (thinking about removing because I never actually use it) and Status Notifier. I can't even imaging the phone without it. Being able to see the new mail notification and missed call stuff on my status bar is awesome. It should have been a feature of iPhone OS.

That said, I don't notice anything slowing my phone down. I never installed Winterboard on this firmware.

The only things i Had on my jailbroekn iPHone was SBSettings and categories. And the SMS would sometimes take forever to open up and would be laggy as hell. I performed side by side comparisons with an unjailbroken and it won every time. I un-jailbroke mine and it's always snappy with everything it does. The only reason i would jailbreak would be to change the color of the SMS bubbles (by replacing system files of course - Winterboard causes a shitton of lag!

Last week I decided to jailbreak my iPhone again. I decided to experiment and see what I could do. I wanted to find out what I liked and what I disliked about jailbreaking. I'm not a noob to this stuff though. I've been hacking and jailbreaking since 1.1.1 (I even went through the 47 step manual jailbreak). Here are some thoughts on what I found:

1. Voids your warranty (if something goes wrong and you can't restore, you're screwed). It's not illegal to jailbreak though.
1a. Apparently it's illegal too: http://i.gizmodo.com/5153101/apple-says-jailbreaking-iphones-is-illegal-dammit

2. Certain things cause the iPhone to lag considerably. (last night I had to help my brother uninstall a TON of crap because it took like 7 seconds to open SMS)

3. I want to be able to upgrade to the newest Firmware when it comes out and not have to wait around for the dev-team to come out with another patch. (although they're usually very quick)

4. iTunes backs up all of your purchased applications and preferences, but if you have to restore again, you have to re-install all of your fancy hacks and mods (which can be a pain sometimes)

5. I like to know that if my iPhone is running slow or buggy, it's Apple's fault. (I don't need to be wondering if it's from a third party hack or patch)

6. Besides the slowdown, most themes can make the SpringBoard look crazy cool, but since the majority of the rest of the OS is stock, it doesn't feel like it belongs.

7. I've found that most of the hacks, mods and jailbroken applications are cool at first but quickly get old fast. (this is my opinion... I'm not trying to be a fanboy here, I've tried a lot of things while I was jailbroken)

8. I don't change my settings enough to justify having SBSettings. (I usually just keep everything on... 3G, Wifi, Bluetooh... etc. I used to worry about battery life and stuff until I realized that I hardly ever even put a dent in my battery since I'm always near a computer or charger in the car.)

9. Jailbreaking was fun back in the 1.1.1-1.1.4 days but, with the addition of the App Store, I can find almost everything that the old jailbreaking gave me and more. Apple is slowly loosening their grip on what the developers can do.

10. If someone found my jailbroken iPhone, they could plug it into the computer and instantly gain access to the entire filesystem (even without SSH). I know apps like DiskAid and PhoneView can view and edit the entire filesystem of a jailbroken iPhone over USB. However, if someone wanted my data bad enough, they could just QuickPwn it themselves and have a field day.... so much for passcode locks.

I have a few things I'd like to add in contrast to this list... some nice things about jailbreaking:

1. Customizing SMS tones was cool

2. If a certain icon or graphic in an application didn't look good to me, I could change it.

3. Somehow you're instantly cooler when you have a jailbroken iPhone and you're showing off the extra things to someone who has a regular stock iPhone.

4. Jailbroken (Cydia and Installer) applications are updated as soon as the developer has the update ready. No waiting for approval and waiting weeks for a small bug fix.

5. It's fun if you like to tinker.

These statements are just my opinions... they're not scientific in anyway. These are all based on things I've noticed from having and using a jailbroken iPhone. I'm not a developer, so I don't know how everything works internally.

There you have it. My reasons why I just restored to a stock Apple Firmware ONCE AGAIN. For some reason I always do this. Since 2.0 came out, I've been jailbreaking every few weeks for a little while and then restoring. For some reason, I always think it's going to be cool or better and I like the freshness to cure bordom, but the freshness doesn't last.

What are some things you DON'T like about jailbreaking? I think I touched on just about everything, but I'm sure people can come up with more reasons. What are your thoughts?

Edit: I fixed number 1 to show that jailbreaking is illegal in Apple's eyes.

My #1, and ONLY REASON why Jailbreak is bad...

IT'S ILLEGAL, AND VIOLATES THE DMCA in US.

  • Apple is being ridiculous.
  • It's a freaking mobile computer device in the palm of your hands, OH NOES 7 SECONDS *RAGEEEEEEEE.*
  • If any of my desktops are running fine and I see no immediate reason to update, I won't update at least not until I know it's perfectly fine.

Question: Why wait 7 seconds for something to open *if* it should only take less than 2 seconds?

Update your source, it isn't law yet, the hearing begins Spring 09'

It's actually even farther than that from being law -- if Apple "wins" (i.e. if the EFF's request is not granted), it doesn't mean that jailbreaking is illegal. In fact, in that worst case scenario, nothing changes.

Yep. Even if Apple has their way, the legal standing of jailbreaking remains unchanged. There's no court case underway that would set precedent. Instead, Apple's simply trying to avoid having the EFF get an explicit ruling that would more or less hamstring their efforts to prevent homebrew. Apple obviously doesn't want a legal endorsement of jailbreaking, but my bet is that they're not going to try to fight it in court. It would be a costly, costly process, and there's a not-insignificant chance that they'd lose anyway. My guess is just that they'd rather it remain a gray area than be explicitly allowed.

Why not wait and be patient, it's a ****ing mobile computing device in the palm of your hands. It's 7 seconds, look at the alternative, an actual phone call, an email, and lastly mail. With that said, it was your brothers fault, just like computers, installing crap makes your computer run like crap. Sounds like user error rather than the actual act of jail breaking.

Do you feel now we in the 21st century we take things for granted?
Ya, well now we live in an amazing, amazing world and it's wasted on the crappiest generation of just spoiled idiots that don't care. This is what people are like now, they got their phone now and are like "ughh, it won't send" Give it a second, it's going to space, can you give it a second, is the speed of light to slow for you?!

Here's the deal. I NEVER said that the act of jailbreaking makes the iPhone run like crap. I carefully said "Certain things" cause the iPhone to run slower after jailbreaking but, only if you install those things. Finding out which things those are is the guessing part. So if you want your iPhone to run at top notch speeds and you don't want to have to worry and guess at what to install... then jailbreaking isn't for you.

You have to admit... the things MOST people jailbreak for are the MobileSubstrate mods like SBSettings, WinterBoard, 5-icon Dock and Intelliscreen. Those things slow down the device. I'm fine with having a basic setup with the ability to change those ugly app store icons that I hate.

All I want is maybe a missed call/sms/email notifier and maybe weather on the locked screen. That's it.

Not gonna jailbreak for it ... but that's something I'd happily accept if Apple released it.

Bring out the tethering or else am jailbreaking!! listen please :apple:

I have 2 broadband connection at home and on sunday both went down at the same time, i wish my iphone would let me tether then, needed lappy connection badly at that time.

So instead i just took a break browsing on my iPhone! I am holding on just coz of the fear factor of screwing something up.

Stupid :apple:

If AT&T "brings out the tethering" are you willing to pay an extra $30 a month for something you "might" use every once in a while if your broadband goes down? I'm confused.

To me, the notifier is worth it. It never noticed a slowdown at all. I don't have any other MobileSubstrate or background apps at all other than that. I had weather lockscreen but ditched it because it's not all that hard to click weather and having it ping a server I figured was going to drain battery.

But, I digress, It's not that difficult to JB your phone and if you just install the notifier directly from Pwnage Tool you won't even need to install Cydia. You'll have a speedy iPhone that's stock except the sweet notifier. :D All your friends will be jealous.

And to Mr. "it's illegal" Go read a book. Make sure it's not out loud!!! That's illegal too now. :D We all remember what's constitutes as fair use right? The only thing it does do is void your warranty, but there is no way they can even know if you just restore to stock firmware. So, if it makes you feel better, you're not breaking any law unless you pirate software with your jailbroken phone, which I imagine is only a very SMALL portion of the community. Most of us do it for additional FREE software on Cydia/Installer and to theme, get terminal support, or to not pay 100 bucks just to develop software for your own use. :D

Haha, yea that's a joke. They should permit teathering for free up to a small amount of usage. I don't want to use it as my Primary internet connection or anything, it's just nice in case I got no internet and need to get X11 access to a server or update my SVN repo. Used PDAnet once so I wouldn't pay for access from AT&T unless it was $5 bucks a month.

Talked to my lawyer about this, and he said this WILL probably pass, EFF will fail to convince the lawmakers that jailbreak is not illegal.

I'm still putting all my money on Jailbreak becoming legal. I want to do that. Now, whoever is calling me a fud, get the f- out of my life, or buy a PC  you PC lover.

This thread still lives?

Might as well repeat what I've already stated- I'm jailbroken, been jailbroken for awhile and I have NO LAG. I'm sure this is going to ruffle some feathers, but its just the truth. I don't have Winterboard or Backgrounder running, but I do have other MobileSubstrate apps, and my iPhone is running smooth. And if I want to run something in the background, I can just do a quick download and uninstall it when I'm done. The point is, you can be jailbroken and without lag. It all depends on what apps you use.

Like most of life, it comes down to trade-offs. For me, having Cut & Paste, Notifications, Tethering, Qik, and Video Recording are well worth an occasional restart. It keeps my iPhone running smooth and the additional functionality helps keep me satisfied with my ridiculous AT&T bill. If getting down and dirty with troubleshooting POTENTIAL issues isn't your cup of tea, then vanilla firmware has your name written all over it. For me, the troubleshooting is half the fun. Unfortunately, I don't get nearly enough opportunity to try and fix things as I used to- Jailbroken 2.2.1 is way too stable!

The point is, this is your iPhone, do what makes you happy. Trying to convince someone to jailbreak or not is an exercise in futility. What is important is to not spread false information so that the end user is able to make an informed and educated decision.
