I succumbed to updating to iOS9, unpaired my watch, then repaired and everything is perfect.

Native apps load instantaneously on opening once they've been reinstalled onto the watch. I did reinstall watch from it's previous backup.

Only reason why I knew it was going to be an iOS9 thing was my partner has iOS9 with her iPhone5 and watchOS1 and hers was working without fault.

iOS9 however isn't laggy like I was expecting. Hooray! Plus the :apple:watch is back to working order now.

Hope everyone can sort out their problem as quick and painlessly as myself. Good luck.

What if I changed my iphones's name to something else without restoring, unpairing the Apple Watch right after that and then repairing? Do you think it might work?

No idea. :) That said, it sounds like a cheaper alternative to all the other workarounds above, right? Let us know if you try it!

How many pages in a topic before Macrumors makes a post about it? :) This issue needs more attention! I'm afraid Apple aren't focusing much on a solution for us

(Apologies for the following lengthy post)

Happy to now report success in my case through a mix of what others above have done.

1- Backed up phone to iTunes without changing the name of the phone to make sure I had copy in case this didn't work.

2- In iTunes on computer under "main" Apps menu item which shows all Apps I have stored there (not the Apps designation for those specifically on phone), I deleted affected/crashing apps to ensure all old copies of wouldn't somehow make their way back onto phone through a future sync. I then disconnected iPhone from computer

3- Went to Watch App on iPhone > 'General' > scrolled to bottom > "Reset" > Erase all content and settings from your Apple Watch

4- Connected iPhone to computer and backed up to iTunes again (still didn't change the phone's name). Disconnected the phone

5- On iPhone, went to ‘Settings’ > 'General' > scrolled to the bottom > 'Erase all settings', NOT erase all content

6- Phone rebooted, then I began process of setting iPhone up as new by going into ‘Settings’ > 'General' > scrolled to bottom > 'Erase All Content and Settings'

7- iPhone then restarted and I followed prompts to set up as new. This included providing Apple ID info, enabling Location Services, enabling Touch ID and Siri, and since I don’t use iCloud Drive or Keychain, bypassed those

8- Paired iPhone with Watch, setting Watch up as new. Since I had previously used iCloud for contacts and email all that data flowed back into iPhone in a couple minutes.

9- Went to App Store on iPhone and downloaded Dark Sky. Went into Watch App on iPhone to make sure it showed up, was fully installed, and appeared in 'Complications' list. Once confirmed I launched Dark Sky on Watch and it worked.

10- One at a time I repeated the process with each of the affected apps. All worked

11- Once done, I decided NOT to proceed with attempts to restore iPhone from last backup. Instead, connected iPhone to iTunes on computer, chose to set it up as new, gave it a different name from prior backups, and then manually added back all other stuff, starting with other Apps stored – synced those first and reconfirmed all Watch Apps still worked, followed by Books, Photos, Tones, Music – syncing after each category (probably overkill, but wanted to keep checking the Watch Apps).

At the end of it, everything works and iPhone is pretty much identical to before all of these massively tedious and frustrating efforts ensued. It is clear there is some kind of legacy data stored with pre-Watch OS 2 iTunes backups that doesn’t play nice with Watch OS 2, such that wiping Watch and iPhone and downloading fresh versions of previously affected/crashing apps directly to wiped phone solves.

One of my apps updated to native and now it doesn't load, while other native apps still work fine because I've done the reset before. I read the comment on App store, the apple watch's app of other ppl's still good so the problem is my watch. Do I have to reset every time if any app update to native?

I just download a new app I haven't used before, install it on apple watch and it works, while the updated app is now crashed, can't understand!

this is def a problem.. i'm not trying 15 different steps (although i appreciate the effort some people have went through to try and fix it)

Has anyone heard back from apple support on this issue as yet?

I spent most of the day on the phone with apple support yesterday. They basically said you have to set up both as new. Which people here have already figured out.

Thats the most frustrating thing, mine works perfectly as well when set up as new. But thats not why I've had an iPhone the last 8 years. I got bored of setting up phones as new YEARS ago. And that's what I do for living. ;)

As it stands, I'm still using the Apple watch a great deal, but its getting more and more gimped as apps get updated. Once its back to only the default apple apps working I might as well go back to wearing my microsoft band on my right wrist and start rotating in my other normal watches again. XD

I had this problem on 9.0.2 and I updated to iOS 9.1 beta 4 and no problems now whatsoever. I tried all the troubleshooting steps possible in 9.0.2 to no avail. Glad simply updating worked. All native apps work (carrot, mlb, transit)

Perhaps they fixed it in beta 4 of iOS 9.1?

No dice for me. Updated to beta 4 (from iOS 9.0.2) and still doesn't work. Updated phone. Rebooted watch. Nothing. I'm trying the weather network and sportsnet. I think they are Canadian apps but they are the only ones I could find I know are native.

:(

damn, did you try to reinstall the native apps? perhaps try to unpair the watch and re pair with the new ios 9.1 beta 4?

problem solve!

i have followed onlymehdi and Timver steps but no luck:(
i know the problem come form iphone backup so i do the steps again but a little bit different

1. delete all apps that have watch app (native and non-native) on your iphone and itunes
2. unpair apple watch from iphone (not erase apple watch content and settings)
3. not sync any songs, videos, tones, books, tv shows...etc. but apps from itunes
4. reset all settings from iphone (not erase all content and settings)
5. backup iphone to itunes (my backup not encrypted)
6. erase all content and settings form iphone
7. restore iphone backup from itunes
8. pair watch (set it as a new)
9. download an app that is native app for watchos 2 (apple store, citymapper, sky guide) form iphone appstore and install it to watch
10. now, native app work fine:)

iphone 5s ios 9.0.2, watchos 2, windows itunes 12.3

I just installed 9.1 Beta 4 to see if that fixed the problem - it didn't. I also just unpaired the Watch, deleted ALL Watch apps from my iPhone and then restored and re-downloaded them from App Store. Didn't work. I'm trying to avoid setting up as new as it would literally take me a day or two as I have so much content/settings as well as very complicated email accounts & verification etc. Grrr!

Hey everyone!

I'm back with a solution that works 100% but won't fit everyone.

All I did was install iOS 9.1 beta 3 on my iPhone and set it up as new, as well as setting my Watch as new too - all apps started working. This solution should also work for iOS 9.1 beta 4.

I lost all my activity data and achievements, but that's OK for me - the serenity of all the apps working on watchOS 2 is better for me - and boy, do they work faster now!

I'm still recovering my data but I think it was very much worth it. Good luck to you folks!

really wish we would get a watchOS 2.0.1 update soon (like today) that would fix this issue. not setting my expectations too high on this happening though.

When I spoke to geniuses at the store and the Senior advisor on the phone, they all said I was the first person they'd had with this issue. So idk how aware Apple even is of it.

If you speak to anyone from Apple support regarding this issue, please point them to this thread.

I heard back from the Apple senior adviser assigned to my case. She sent me a procedure from engineering that had me erasing both devices and setting them up as new. As others have reported, this did fix the 3rd party app problem. It left me with another big problem, however - all my data on my phone was gone. Of course, as soon as I restored the phone from an earlier backup to get my data back, the 3rd party apps stopped working.

Is there a way I can recover my app data without restoring from backup? I have many years worth of passwords stored in my password app (ewallet), and losing those is not an option.

I so agree. We Shouldn't have to go through all this restoring and reset and crap just to get apps working on the watch.

Joined the forums just to comment on this topic. To fix this native app crashing problem, I took my watch into the Apple Store for a genius appointment and they had no idea what was going on so it was sent off almost two weeks ago. Apple could not figure out what was going wrong with it so they just gave me a brand new watch. I got home with my watch last night and updated to OS2 only to find that native apps still would not load. This means it has to be a phone issue in my mind.

Same problem for me too, I did all the encrypted backup and restore last night but nothing has changed. Haven't had native apps on my watch yet. Not really impressed so far. I have an iPhone 6s+ And an aluminium Apple Watch.

Some of the people who had this problem had no problem pairing with another phone. It's sounding more and more like that might play a key factor.

I wonder if Apple dropped the ball in not releasing the beta to the public. I mean, come on, did every single beta tester's watch run native apps no issues???
