Poor quality control and lack of appropriate testing. Add to that, senior management putting the developers under pressure to release products before they are ready and appropriately tested to maximise potential sales and that's your answer.
Add to that a mass exodus of senior management at Apple over the last few years, and very questionable hiring practices.

All four HomePods are dead. Thanks, Apple. Thanks, Craig Federighi. Google doesn’t even need to try. Apple is beating themselves up.
Sorry that happened to you... I'm sure Apple will give you new HomePods. But FYI, Google bricked Google Home mini's last week.

My homepods updated fine thankfully but the user profile support doesn’t seem to be working. Seeing reports everywhere that only one voice is being recognized even when all is set up correctly. That’s my experience as well. I suspect there’s a problem with that functionality as well.

Apple has their head so far in the sand. They bring out a product and when it doesn’t make them money out the ****** developers on it.
My only concern is how do I get the smart home things to work with something else. The echo is trash and don’t like google.
Really does suck. And just because someone invests into an ecosystem doesn’t mean they are foolish when the company is not a startup. But it’s also a risk. See also the zune or windows phone. Point being Apple and HomeKit have potential but the clown at the top of the company is too focused on human rights and services that he has forgotten what made them great. Hardware and software controlled by one. Stay focused. But clearly this is the beginning of the end and I’m now looking into HomeKit alternatives

Newer HomePod owner here. My updates downloaded, but I haven’t installed any of them. Am I okay or will the downloads install themselves?

Is Apple sending out refurbs or new HomePods for the ones the update bricked?

The replacement homepod that I received last week after mine bricked (prior to the update release) says that it was a new or refurbished homepod. It doesn't distinguish. It looks new other than not having retail packaging.

All 9 of my HomePods are dead. This might be the straw that makes me defect to Microsoft. And after ordering the new AirPods this morning I'm just in utter shock at this point that they allow this to happen.

Where do you even begin in discussing a software update bricking $3,000 in speakers and they offer a certified replacement unit because of their foul up? This is a new record low in my opinion and might move to Sonos if this is what they deem as acceptable. Singlehandledly 5 hours ago turned my smart home into a brick.

@TimApple, unbelievable!!!
Nine??!! Oh my god.

The reality is, the culture at Apple has changed. People’s jobs used to be on the line under old leadership (Steve), now the culture is “you made a mistake, try better next time”.

With Steve, there was no next time because the product shipped in working order, no questions asked, otherwise you were shown the door.

Apple has softened up its management, that’s why their products are bug-ridden.

I hate to beat the “Steve would have never allowed it” line to death...but it’s just true.

I got to work today and did the iOS 13.2 update.

About to head home where I have (3) HomePods waiting for me that haven't been updated – what will happen when I get home, or in-range of my home WiFi network? Will my iPhone automatically trigger/push an update to the HomePods? If so, how do I prevent this from happening?

Thanks!

I was downloading the HomePod update using the Home.app when I read about the bricking. I immediately attempted to stop the download from my iPhone but I couldn't figure out how to stop the download so I unplugged all my HomePods.

I already have "Install auto" turned off... but how can I stop this download? I tried force quitting the Home.app, but when I reopen it, the DL is still going.

Spot on! Cook is a joke. Jobs would have called them into the theater andmade an example of the leadership or the whole team over this.

combining this piece of information with the bricked homepods all over the world and also the news I read that a German guy did not get the ambient sounds working on his updated HomePod, somehow I am starting to believe that Apple has released a wrong update file or something. Not the planned release with just an undetected bug, but like completely the wrong file.

Seriously, if you haven't figured out to WAIT a few hours and not update immediately then this is a good time to learn that lesson.

yeah i just did that. looks i did so in time.
Yes. I can wait til the dust settles. I only have one in my home office so do not need family voice features or to use to make phone calls. I can live with it as it is

I think you’re correct. Apple‘s change management system and their developers have become sloppy and likely for the reason you stated. It’s disgraceful.

I would be firing anyone who let this update out, especially if this is not the first time they allowed for this to happen. The new Apple is too focused on hiring the right diversity of engineers and managers rather than the most competent ones. They are also too focused on not hurting employee’s feelings by telling them that they will get the boot the next time they screw up.

As time goes on, Apple is concerned about everything else but the core aspects of their business such as producing high-quality products that “just work”.

How do you turn off auto update for the HomePod? Or it it the same thing as the iOS auto update toggle?
