I was downloading the HomePod update using the Home.app when I read about the bricking. I immediately attempted to stop the download from my iPhone but I couldn't figure out how to stop the download so I unplugged all my HomePods.

I already have "Install auto" turned off... but how can I stop this download? I tried force quitting the Home.app, but when I reopen it, the DL is still going.

Just checked and it looks like the update is downloading. Any way I can stop it or make sure it doesn’t update?

Mine was downloading too when I checked, but I turned off auto update, and it didn't install after downloading. The update pane offers me an option to "Install" now, but needless to say, I'm going to wait.

That’s true, but my Google Home has never bricked over an update and I’ve never heard of a mass bricking incident so Apple might want to review their quality control protocol on software releases.
Google bricked Google Home Minis LAST WEEK. Go ahead, Google it.

My fact stating is not an issue, your insecurity is. I’m sorry you were fooled into buying a speaker that only plays what apple lets you play. Lmao.
Damn, I can't believe I bought 2 HomePods at a heavily discount price, only to be let down by the fact that I can only play all the music I've ever wanted to :(

I've never heard of something happening, so it must have never happened.

Not for mine it isn’t.
Then reset it, like a normal person? Sure, right this moment ain't a good time if you managed to update yours to 12.3, but this is a small window over a nearly 2 year long life time of the product. Do you regularly buy expensive products and then disregard them at the first sign of a bug?

lol the internet, can’t beat it

Yeah I see on my iPad that the update is "Downloading" but I wont update it since install updates automatically is turned off

Oh great. I see this now at work, go into the home app, hit settings, no setting to stop auto-updates and it now says "updating". Thoughts and prayers for my HomePods please.

That is what I see too..but I think after it downloads the update you have the option to install it you dont have to..mine is set to NOT install automatically but its downloading something I just wont install the darn thing

Heads up. My HomePods survived the update but I went and tried to reset one of them from the home app, now it’s bricked. White spinning thing nonstop on top. Great!

ok so this is starting to make sense then. HomePod shows there is an update, it download but won't install.
maybe Apple pulled the update.

Yeah for me when I go to my Home it says homepod "Updating" but my setting is set to not install updates automatically and nothing is downloading not sure why it says its updating its updating nothing

Edit:
Ok so apparently it did download the update but it gives you an option to install it which I wont

I have two and both say that they are updating. They have said this for quite a while. How long did it take for your updates?

It’s interesting I turned off auto update on iphone and then went to look on Mac and it was trying to download or install it was not clear. But looking in settings its turned off on Mac also. Weird it seems to be trying to download via/thru my Mac and iPad but again auto updates off. Phew... thought it was gonna get me anyway but I seem to have killed it

Mine says it's requesting an update but isn't doing anything. It is set to auto update, but again, it's not downloading.

It's a shame that we have to come HERE to find out about this. APPLE, you know, the TRILLION dollar company should be earning us. SMH.

Turn off autoupdate straight away. If you had it turned on, it started downloading and you turn it off before it finishes, it won't then automatically install - when the download finishes you'll see an 'Install' button (which you don't want to press, of course!)

The funny thing is the company doesn't have a clue on their end this is going on and every one always acts surprised just like when you go into a retail store. This is the first I'm hearing of this.

Don’t understand Apple sometimes, just put in a recovery rom, it prevents this from happening as you can allways just boot into a recovery state from embed rom to perform a reinstall of the firmware or go back to the previous firmware.

Apple make third grade products and don’t bring much culture in there products.

My setting is set to NOT install updates automatically..but it did download the update it just didnt install..so what happens when Apple finally fixes this monstrocity, does the new update overwrite the bad one or how does it work

I got scared for a second. As I started to read the title and saw "bricking", my iPhone started to update to 13.2

Isn't it great when the products they themselves break the most with updates are the ones without any way for a user to DFU reset it?

This is why I think the user should always have a reset function of this caliber for all devices they own. It is dumb to me that the AW has a "diagnostic" port that we don't have a USB cable to connect to when something goes wrong. And not even an Apple Store can do this for us, how unnecessary.

Funny thing all my ios and Mac devices have update turned off but it seems to keep trying to download and then goes back to there is update and gives me option to download again. I look back at it and it is again trying to download really weird. I think I killed the first attempt on my phone so it does not appear it is downloaded but hope it is not I would assume if it is they over write it.
