The 2TB port MBP is such a weird product... it seems to exist just as a way to lower the entry price. It's clear Apple wants the 13" MBP to be a $1800+ device... but they don't completely ignore the entry model. It just gets updated at a weird cadence. The 2015 and earlier 13" MBP used to be decent value in the Mac lineup, now the 4TB model is probably the worst... and the pretty good value 2TB model is only minimally updated.

I kinda wish it was downgraded to function keys... I'd probably get that instead of the new Air.

I agree with this - the real 13" MBP is the 4TB version, which this is a nice upgrade for. 10th gen Intel, big spec bump to be 16gb/512gb base at same price, scissor keyboard. As others have said, this is a nice upgrade before what I imagine is the change to 14" MBP.

The 2TB "entry-level" is just a way for people on a tight budget to get a "pro" if they want. I agree, it really makes more sense to get a 2020 MBA now, but it's at least an option for those who want the MBP form factor.

So those of us who need something a little more than a base machine and a little less than a prosumer+ machine get to choose between a poorly engineered cooling system, year-old tech with a new keyboard, or spending much more than we need to. Disappointing, to say the least.
What's the difference between the 8th gen and 10th gen processors?

They should have just axed the 13" base Pro if they were going this route. The $1799 option is better than the previous $1799 option, but you hit the nail on the head. People looking between the Air/base Pro have a decision to make. Personally, I am just going to wait longer before I upgrade.

Is MBP 16" going to get 10th gen CPU upgrade?
There aren't really any proper 10th gen 45W CPUs suitable for the 16 inch. The newer 45W intel CPUs are basically identical to 9th gen but with a higher thermal limit to get a marginally faster turbo boost

In the 16 inch MBPro, I am doubtful this will have any real-world performance advantage at all. Perhaps not even measurable in benchmarks unless the workload is very specific and very short-lived.

Definitely. The entry level pro model got the shaft, but people who really need the pro performance and opt for the $1799 are getting a good upgrade.

Disappointed.
I expected at least Wifi 6 and the smaller bezels since that was to be expected after the MBP16 reveal.

I've been waiting for years for a proper update to my MBA 2015. First the non-trustworthy keyboard, then the joke with 7W CPUs, now again very little progress with the MBP, too.

So I'll wait longer. If Apple doesn't want my money, fine by me.

Same here. I've been waiting for an update for my 2015 MBA, and was hoping for a 14" MBP. I really would like a slightly larger screen, but the 16" MBP is massive overkill for my use case. So, like you, I'll hang on a bit longer on the apparently slim chance that we'll see a 14" MBP in the fall.

Anemic approach with not updating the low end MBPs.

Only - and 100% foreseeable - outcome is that MBP, users in need of an upgrade, will bleed to another eco system.

With that approach, Apple might as well link directly to the XPS 13 on Dell's webshop.

Going for the 2Ghz model with 16GB RAM to replace my 2012 MacBook Pro. 14inch model with Wifi 6 would have been nice to have. I don't think I can wait any longer!

Can someone explain why Apple puts 802.11ax on the iPhone 11, but not on the Mac Pro and on the MacBooks, which were all released afterwards? It seems to me that Wi-Fi 6 is both more important and easier to implement on a computer than on a phone?
Easier for Apple to upgrade products when they hold things back rather than actually upgrading them.

I have tried and tried, but I really prefer Mac OS. I just am way more productive.

Looks like the only difference with the base model I bought with upgraded ram and storage right before the Apple Store shutdown is the keyboard and a slight price drop for not having to upgrade the storage to 256gb. I actually don’t mind the butterfly keyboard so it’s not a huge loss.

I was going to return the machine and get the new Air which came out a week after I made my purchase but no matter how many times I tried, the return label wouldn’t generate for me to print. So I’m kinda stuck either way until Apple reopens their stores assuming they will still take any returns from months back.

Would all of the above very reasonable-sounding reservations be mostly irrelevant to someone currently running a mid-2009 MBP?

Stuff like this always reminds me why I can't stand Tim and his penny pinching ways

I bet he despises the SE and it's price.

SE actually has a function of attracting more people into the Apple ecosystem where they can be enticed to making future contributions to services revenue, Watch, Mac, etc.

WiFi 6 is barely out, not having shouldn't be an issue for the majority of consumers.
maybe that customer is one of few/many that want to keep the new mbp for the next 5-6 years....for someone who change it almost every 2 years is not a big deal...
