The base model with 2 Thunderbolt ports has been always different with less powerful CPU. Anyway they updated them anyway and they are quite good machines. All the four ports models has been updated with 10th gen.

That’s funny, because before today the base model had the same generation Intel chips as the 4tb models.

Being stuck at home until at least September, I won’t order one yet. Probably will wait for refurbs to come though. Hopefully a few i7/16gb/512’s.

Don’t need more ram or storage, just enough power to run a W10 LTSC VM occasionally for Civil3D and do some Matlab work.

I offload most of my more intensive tasks like handbrake encoding to my NUC8 at home anyways, no need to do them on a laptop. Will probably upgrade that to the new NUC 9 extreme in June as well so I can throw a midrange GPU into it and use NVENC.

Overall still happy I returned my 16” and waited for these. I love the 16, but it was mostly being used as a desktop as it was large and unpleasant to pack around in addition to a 12.9” iPad.

Wireless n devices are still relevant now.

Not sure why you think AX is that important. I have an AX router (Asus AX88U running Merlin). There is no tangible difference in performance vs AC.

Sure, in a benchmark it’s faster. But in real world use no.

You’re still heavily limited by the throughput of your other devices and your connection itself. I only have 600mbps service, and my NAS can only do 110mb/s anyways thanks to SATA limitations. Everything else I own is wired for lower latency and to keep things simple.

People find the goofiest stuff to whine about, seriously.

So why does Apple make a big deal about the iPhone and iPad having WiFi 6 then?

I'm really torn. I have a 2018 2.3 GHz i5. I'm perfectly happy with it in every respect except for one HUGE caveat: the butterfly keyboard. I've had to send it in to Apple twice so far, and I already have another sticky key and will likely have to send it in again. Seems ridiculous to buy a new computer just for a keyboard that works... especially since I'm happy with everything else, and I'd prefer to wait for the Apple processor and 14" screen to upgrade. Any thoughts?

This gave me some comfort for my next purchase (Asus Zephyrus G14). For $1400, It's looking like a solid device more & more even compared to new models Intel 10th gen CPUs.

Honestly i think it is...if we do see pro apps on IOS 14 then it feels like that will be their focus going forward
Honesty, I don’t ever touch my MacBook Pro. I understand I don’t utilize my MacBook Pro the way some others who need the “pro” apps, however, the iPad Pro with Pencil 2 and keyboard combo is just really hard to beat. If they do bring pro apps, what then will be the incentive to buy the MacBook Pro. Maybe this was always the way the tech would evolve-via a touch based interface with cursor support. Apple is already there with the processing power with their A series given the architecture. Next up will be iPad Pros with 16GB of RAM or more.

Why are 13" Macbook Pros SO much wimpier than 15" Macbook Pros? I know this is a poor proxy for real world performance, but looking at both Geekbench 4 and 5 results, and Geekbench 4 and 5 Metal and OpenCL GPU results, my 2015 15" Macbook Pro is still faster in both CPU and graphics than the current top of the line 13" Macbook Pros - and it had the same price tag 5 years ago as they do now. This would put Intel's Moore's Law at ZERO in the past 5 years.

The only difference I see in packaging between the laptops is about an inch less in width and length - is Apple seriously unable to cool 20 more watts to accommodate the same CPU/GPUs in the 15" as the 13"? OK, I get it - it's a marketing decision that you get 15"/16" alongside of more powerful processors, but it doesn't have to be that way. I suppose there'd be a lot less people buying the larger laptops if the only difference was the screen, but I think there's still a lot of people who really need as large a screen as they can get.

is anyone buying this? I've waited a couple of months to see this update and I'm also not impressed. I also think that maybe our expectations were to high. 32 Gb of RAM and 4 TB of storage for 13" laptop is pretty damn good.

It’s even crazier when you think about how many people are living with routers from 5-10 years ago and not thinking twice about what the new MBP DOESN’T have. Even for those running newish routers, if they don’t have a super high throughput connection to the web (or need fast wireless peer to peer sharing of ginormous files in an office or home), there is little reason to complain about the MBP not having a wifi6 modem.

People are stupid that way.

So why did Apple bother putting WiFi 6 into the iPhone and iPad then?

The 4 Thunderbolt 3 port 13" MBP just got its DRAM doubled to 16GB and the base storage doubled for free, it got the latest CPUs and it got the Magic Keyboard, at the same price. And yet the largest complaints here are about bezels and a 14" screen that was a RUMOR. People here need to get a grip.

Exactly.
If I hear the word "bezel" one more time I'm going to call the police.

Welp.

This is the machine I was dreading. Better keyboard and a spec bump. I mean it’s okay but... my late 2016 is gonna hang on till the next legit redesign.

For the high end 13" Backmood Pros, besides the new keyboard and higher capacity options, are there other changes? I read somewhere that the new 2020 model has better sound, but haven't confirmed that.

If your maxed out Mini can do the heavy lifting for another year then try and get through the next 12 months. As you can see with this release (and most previous iterations) RAM and SSD gets cheaper over time. So by 2021 you'll be able to max out a new MBP even more so for the same money and it's possible Apple will do a redesign next year. Plus you might get USB4 on the next laptops.

I've got a rMBP from 2015 which I enjoy using and it has the ports that I need. Plus I'm using a Mac mini which I upgraded myself with 2TB and 16GB RAM. I'm telling myself I don't need a new Apple computer until 2021 despite the pull to purchase one being strong.

Enjoy your new kitchen. Spend on that instead.
My thoughts exactly. Sometimes tough to resist the temptation for new and shiny, but I think my current laptop, even 8 years old, is good enough. I just hope they don’t screw up the keyboard again while I wait!

Then tell me which Intel-based 13” MacBook Pro has ever had a discrete GPU? Go to the Mac Tracker app, it makes things easier. The NVIDIA 9400M and 320M weren’t dGPU solutions and after NVIDIA ditched chipsets, Apple was SOL. Sorry, you are in possession of incorrect information.
Whatever you want to call them they were far better than integrated graphics. They were comparable to a dedicated GPU. I don’t know if they were technically considered that but they performed as that

Well they had to double the storage as the Air starts with 256GB. I wondered why they didn't update the MBP the same day the Air launched. It made little sense to keep it with the old keyboard and a measly 128 storage

Honestly ... non of the pro machines should ever start with 8GB RAM or 128GB Storage ... next year 16GB across the board with 512GB should be the standard ... 4TB is serious cash grab beyond ludicrous.

So why does Apple make a big deal about the iPhone and iPad having WiFi 6 then?

Gotta make a big deal out of new features to sell stuff to the unwashed masses. Just like car manufacturers making giant deals out of next to useless features.

Most consumers know nothing about the technology they are buying, they just see a new shiny and that’s enough for them.

I’m not sure why anyone would care about AX on a phone. You’re not transfering massive databases of information on them. You’re streaming HD video usually, which you’ve been able to do since like wireless g.

After the headache I’ve had with intel’s AX200 chipset on desktop class hardware, I’d be happy to never use it again.

I have the same 2018 i5 as you, as my personal MBP. I also have a 2019 i5 as my work computer. I personally don't have any issues with either keyboard, but I imagine it's frustrating.

I think you're better off sticking with it, in expectation of an ARM processor. My 2018 and 2019 "feel" the same to me, and I can't imagine today's 2020 being substantially different in performance. But, I have high hopes an ARM model with provide tangible performance and features, even if there's some x86 trade-offs (I'll deal).
