I suppose I am not alone, but now need to decide between MBA and MBP
For the same price of the basic MBP, we can have 10 gen i7 and 16go of ram
For python dev, is it better to choose that solutions instead of MBP 8gen i5 8go ram?

What are the profor MBP?

After much back and forth deliberation, I am happy to place my order for this new 13" MBP. The reality (for me) was:
1) The 1" screen difference / slightly smaller bezels is not make-or-break
2) As a rural user, WiFI 6 speeds is not even close to being available for my use-case, and when traveling, AC speeds will certainly be sufficient for the foreseeable future. Additionally, a USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet adapter can handle heavy loads in those very rare situations.
3) It is great to catch the 10th Gen CPU update now when it is very current.
4) 32GB RAM is mouth-watering for this form factor - can't wait!!
5) For me, 80% increase in integrated GPU is awesome, given that I do not want the added weight / size / thermal profile of the 16". (Sold my 2017 15" for this very reason - too big, too hot, too heavy)
6) 720p webcam is also a non-factor for me. I literally never use the webcam, even on my iPad. It might as well not even exist for me.
7) While Mini-LED sounds very cool, I don't necessarily want to have a first-generation screen. The retina display is very nice as-is, and I am happy to wait for at least several years of refinements, perhaps by then Apple will have moved on to a much improved Micro-LED anyways.

Ultimately, I am excited to give this laptop a try & I anticipate I will be very happy with it!

I have a 12 inch 2017 macbook and that will do me I like macs but the prices for what you get are not bargains especially that webcam. I’m going to see what the next gen if Surface’s offer

Honest question: are processor speeds (numbers) completely meaningless these days?

I'm on a 2013 13" Macbook Pro with 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 and I can't even open up MacRumors without the warning how it's slowing down my Mac.

The high end here is a 2.3 GHz, also i7, though obviously different generation

I am on a 2012 i5 Mac Mini, I have no problems with it, you might have some OS/software problems.

As for your question, (Intel) processors haven't changed much lately, Intel makes baby steps.

As for this "new" MBP, lol $2000/>€2000 for a 13" i5.

Yeah it's not really about the raw numbers at this point. The difference between, say, a 7th gen and a 10th gen i5 will still be enormous.

Hahaha..ha..ha, can't stop laughing...It's not.

I was hoping Apple would finally do away with the Touch Bar. Am I the only one who feels this way?
I happen to like it, particularly now that the Esc key is back. Neither of us can speak for everybody. How often do you use discrete function keys versus a multifunction space?

You can get the 10th generation Intel CPU on the MacBook Pro

I meant 16 GB + 10th Gen CPU. Edited it.

You may get the 10th Gen i7 with the MBA 2020 but can't really utilize it due to thermal throttling. So get the MBP, it'll at least cool properly. If you can spend the additional money, go for the i5 + 16 GB + 512 GB MBP.

Makes sense if all you care about is hardware. Don’t forget that in addition to whatever specifications you find enticing, they also offer Windows. For me, the value penalty for switching to Windows is incalculable. Besides being satisfactorily in the Apple ecosystem, the tight integration of Apple hardware and software has typically made the end user experience better than the numbers suggest. This has been true for a long time, and it continues amaze me how it escapes people who hang out at the bottom of the specs rabbit hole.

So many things wrong in this statement, you better update yourself.

Nothing wrong with AMD NOT on the top laptops that Dell, HP nor Lenovo makes:
Dell ... XPS top end 13 / 15 ... top spec is NOT AMD
HP ... EliteBook 14/15 (and their x360 / DragonFly G2 model), even ZBook ... top spec NOT AMD
Lenovo ... T- Series ... top spec is NOT AMD

I think it is you that needs to update yourself. These are their (respectively) top selling laptops.

Show me a link for a current model to prove me wrong ;)

$1799 and it wasn't even an option last week. The $1799 model in an incredible value. It would be great if people could realize that, but not this crowd.

Go on then, i'll take you up on this.

Obviously value is highly subjective and you have to pay whatever Apple charges if you want macOS but here in the UK the model you are referring to is £1799, the alternative non Apple machine at the same price point would probably be..

Dell XPS 13
13.3-inch UHD (3840 x 2160) InfinityEdge Touch Display
10th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-10510U
16 GB, LPDDR3, 2133 MHz, Integrated
1 TB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid-State Drive

The MBP is better in some respects but not so much in others for me, certainly wouldn't call it 'incredible' value, that said Apple sets the bar pretty low in terms of value on the Mac line up (spinning drives, 128gb ssds etc).

Well ****. Quad cores in 2020... when we could have six, or eight... great... so it’s like... slightly faster than my 2018... probably still runs hot, loud, and slow... Well they’re not getting my money with this Intel “10th gen” hot garbage.

Well this seals the deal for me, Apple’s going ARM. Otherwise the decision to stick with Intel when far better options exist from AMD makes no sense.

Apple isn’t going ARM. This product was spec’d out 12 months prior. OEMs are always a year or more out when planning their product lines. AMD’s Ryzen 4000 APUs just came out. Even next year when Zen 4 is well known Apple would be looking at Zen 3 for transition.

Does the XPS 13 have a crap quality screen? Thought people said it looks like OLED its that nice. and insanely bright if you use your laptop outdoors a lot or in a bright light setting

Seems like plastic not glass is what I was referring too. The store model at BestBuy near me sure had a plastic screen.
brightness from review state it's not quite 500 nits yet very close. MBP are 500nits as reviewed.

Heat may not be an issue - in terms of throttling due to the carbon-fibre use in their cases vs Apple's aluminium (CAN is British English) yet there has been issues on former XPS 13's in terms of motherboard reliability, inverters dying out, and battery longevity (which can be any manufacturer).

in the end it all comes to preference.

What processor and hard drive space did you go for out of interest?

Where have I heard this argument before? 😴

The Dell XPS 13 has been out with these same exact specs, except with a maximum 2TB hard drive. It's no secret Windows brands have often released updates with the same or better hardware earlier than Apple, and at a reduced price. If OSX is not a necessity, Apple is now a foolish buy. That wasn't always the case when their hardware was ahead of the competition and appealed to all users, even those predominantly using Boot Camp.

What a huge disappointment on the screen size. This is literally an XPS 13 but months late with nothing new to offer. I guess I'll be waiting for a few more months to see if a 14" is announced and if nothing then I guess its time to jump ship. My late 2013 13" is really on its last legs but this isn't worth the money over competitors.

People are right to complain about the 720p facetime camera. During the COVID pandemic, it shows how cheap and crappy that camera is when even celebrities are using their MacBooks to do interviews or do zoom or whatever and look like they are time warping from 2005. Come on Tim Apple, this is just embarrassing.

OEM not choosing AMD for their Top End SKUs; Yes I would agree. My comment was directed more towards your Battery performance, Single threaded, Multi threaded & IPC & power consumption claims.
In each & every of their metrics AMD is ahead of Intel. Esp in Power consumption, Multithreaded performance and battery life.

Now OEMs not including AMD in their high end model might be for multiple reasons.

1. Mindshare, For casual crowds AMD is a budget system so after a certain point they are not ready to spend tons on a AMD model (despite it performing better than Intel)

2. It's a long time process. AMD were competitive in Embedded, Datacenter & Desktop, but Renoir is the first gen where AMD out performed Intel in Mobile in their entire history. Now it takes some time to design this model keeping some specific hardware in minds, which is not changeable for some sudden hardware release. This gen will more be like a trust building gen for AMD in Mobile sector. So we might get more top end model with the release of Cezanne.

3. Intel bribing OEMs (might not be applicable for Apple). It has happened before but who knows it isn't happening right now either.

But model like Asus Zephyrus G14 or Thinkpad T14 aren't bad either despite not being a top end model. It still outperforms Other OEMs higher end model.

Now regarding AMD having supply issue? I don't know probably. One of the reason why I didn't included that part of your comment in my reply. Cause I don't have any information regarding AMDs logistic & supply capacity. So I couldn't refute your claim.

It’s so funny how the Apple bashing trolls are always the first comments in any article. They truly are trolling constantly and once anything comes up they do their thing and bash it immediately. Then gradually as you scroll down the trolls are replaced with the intelligent educated and super informed posts which everyone appreciates. So funny.

LOL, this is so insulting to consumers. Apple still sells the MacBook with an 8th gen processor for a premium $1,300 price. You have to be lying if you think that's a fair price.
