The entry models aren't very exciting, but the top end is IMO.

latest-gen CPUs, faster memory and 32 GB!

How does the 3.0GB/s SSD compare with previous generations and the new mac air?

I think the reason Apple went with only offering 10th gen chips on top end 13-inch MBP configurations is because of supply issues.

I think Intel told Apple - we can't make these chips in sufficient quantities to match the demand for the entry level MacBook Pro.

Keep in mind that most of the Intel chips that Apple uses are custom made for Apple. So there is that going against Apple too, in regards to supply.

I think that was the case. Too little supply for a greater demand than Intel couldn't meet.

I think in the future (maybe another 6 months from now), Apple will quietly refresh the 13-inch MacBook Pro, only this time, offering 10th gen chips across the board, when more SKUs of the 10th gen chips are released and are available in sufficient quantities. Maybe, they will also offer 10th gen chips to the 16-inch as well when they do the refresh. Who knows?

That would have been the better way to go.

Seeing as how the Air's use true 10th gen Ice Lake chips, while the base 13" Pro use 8th gen chips with slower RAM the Air's are arguably better machines than the base 13" Pro.

Compare the $1299 Air vs the $1299 Pro, the Air is a better machine. Some weird overlap going on.
Should've killed the two base models and perhaps given a 256GB/8GB option for $1549.

What processor and hard drive space did you go for out of interest?

I went with the 2.3Ghz i7 and 1 TB SSD 🙌

Going to run this laptop through the gamut as soon as I get it, and should be able to quickly determine whether this will work or if I will need a 16" (in that case, back to the waiting game for a late-2020 refresh).

Trying to avoid the 16" at all costs though because I've said it before but will say it again...too heavy & too hot.

The top end models, starting with the $1,799 model, are the true 13" MBP's, in my opinion.

If / when I buy a new laptop, I want it to last 5 or so years. That means using the latest CPU, Wifi and bluetooth.

What in Wifi 6 will help you in the next 5 years?
Do you even know?

They can fit it in an iPhone and an iPad.

Which are much thicker where the camera is located.

Either Fall 2020 or Spring 2021 Apple reveals AMD based solutions, not ARM. iPadOS based ARM 2-in-1 is Apple's answer to people wishing for a Microsoft Surface solution. We got a taste with the new keyboard. They'll just keep driving that angle and extend the interoperability of side-car with macOS, not ARM for Macbook Pro.
Honestly, this is the path that I prefer Apple takes.

Apple doing its thing. Holding tech back for the next big thing. Sales 101. Always keep something in your pocket for next time.
This is dumb. No company is going to hold something back for a possible future sale if that something would result in a sale now. There will always be something to add in the future.

This has to be the worst deal for 13 inch laptops. It just seems like an excuse “see how **** Intel is?”, we need to move to arm.

But still, a middle finger to the customers. Sooooo bad it physically hurts.

a moment of silence for the death of the butterfly keyboard. It's about time. Let's hope it never comes back. I can start thinking about my return from the surface exile

I know you're not alone - was stuck in same position as I had no replacement worth (me) buying vs my 2015 15 MBP until they released the MBP 16 w/proper RAM, ESC key, keyboard etc. If they had released the presumed next MBP13 (14, TDP25-28W CPU, thermal improvements, keyboard) - might have been a tougher call, but at least some options are becoming available, and the MBP13 as is, even if not what was wanted, at least has some of the key(board, ESC, RAM) improvements many were waiting on.

It’s so funny how the Apple bashing trolls are always the first comments in any article. They truly are trolling constantly and once anything comes up they do their thing and bash it immediately. Then gradually as you scroll down the trolls are replaced with the intelligent educated and super informed posts which everyone appreciates. So funny.
And on this episode of "Everyone who disagrees with me is a troll"...

Seriously though. Is it really so difficult to understand that some people are just genuinely underwhelmed that Apple, a huge company sitting on tons of cash apparently is barely capable of handling a few substantial product upgrades every year? How come other companies take a fraction of Apple's margins, yet manage to pump out dozens of fresh products every year, while all Apple customers get is new wrist bands and last year's technology updates? Sure, you may say that they aren't as polished and whatever, but come on. This can't be this hard. Either Apple is accumulating all their funds for a nuclear war or they have an enormous efficiency problem. Things just don't seem to get done at Apple. I'm not saying this is the end of Apple, but they are clearly subtracting from the core ingredient of their success. If they keep constantly subverting even the most modest expectations regarding innovation, they will eventually become a fashion brand and disappear once people find a new thing. Very short-sighted strategy and very legitimate to point that out.

Apple are releasing things in 2020 they designed and had in their roadmaps 2 years ago.

That’s how the industry works.

We might see mass market machines designed for AMD 4000 series and beyond in 12-24 months whe everyone’s got their act together.

For the foreseeable it’s Intel.

The iPhone 11/Max Pro, iPad Pro, and iPhone SE were probably all in the design cycle 2 years ago and they got WiFi 6....

The new MacBook Air/Pro has not gotten WiFi 6.

The Dell XPS looks so good now....however, I am apprehensive of purchasing a Dell laptop because of their terrible support helpline...Apple is still leagues ahead in this regard and makes that purchase a little bit better...

They put WiFi 6 in the iPhone and iPad Pro.... They weren't holding back there....

It's ridiculous this hasn't made it into its laptops by this point.

I have owned the Dell 17R model back in 2011. Awful laptop. I had multiple motherboard replacements, multiple hard drive replacements, and a new screen replacement in the first 12 months of ownership. Biggest piece of junk I ever owned.

I too am tempted by the XPS, not going to lie.

Thanks ALL!! I'm going to contact them RIGHT NOW!

LOL. Wish me luck 😀

let me know how it goes. I bought the new 13” today but considering bumping it up to the 16” but worried about the financing

I'd pass if it it still has crappy Intel iGPU gaming performance. Should've offered AMD Ryzen 4000 series mobile CPU.
