No 14 no deal, minor upgrade, too expensive across the board on a tough year for most, hello planet apple you hear me?

What many people around here do not understand is that Apple is not expecting that consumers will buy a new laptop every year. Yes, if you have a modern laptop then you probably do not need the newest model. If you are on the market for a new laptop though then the new MacBook Pro is definitely a great choice.
I know that I don't need it, but I would of course love to have the newest model. I will not be buying this now though, maybe later this year.

Basically, the baseline MacBook Pro is a bit of an insult. I don't know why it still exists.

It exists to push you to buy the more expensive model. Basic product tier manipulation... the lowest price option isn't really an option, so more people buy up.

I used to buy MacBook Pros every few years and have Bootcamp’d various versions of Windows (over the years). I’ve never really had much of a use for macOS but I’ve always been a fan of Apple’s hardware design.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with macOS, but my reality is that the majority of the specialized software I use is made for Windows, and I don’t see the point in having half my stuff in Windows and half my stuff in macOS when I can just have it all in Windows and not need to go back and forth.

At one point Apple was far ahead in design and performance, but this isn’t the case anymore... I still like the design but I can’t justify paying the price of a MacBook Pro to run Windows anymore. It’s unfortunate really.

Hmmmm to buy or not to buy. I’m still rocking a 2011 11” MacBook Air and was planning to upgrade to the new MBP. It’s nearly 9 years old and is chugging a bit. The SSD failed last year, and I had it replace. Wondering if I should hold out for this potential 14” new generation one, but I’m guessing most rumours point to next year now?

This is dumb. No company is going to hold something back for a possible future sale if that something would result in a sale now. There will always be something to add in the future.
You obviously never worked in sales. I dealt with sales for a company and we did this and the company We worked for (a car company) did this as well. We would have about 2-3 years of ideas at once, but spread them over the years.

Apple isn’t going ARM. This product was spec’d out 12 months prior. OEMs are always a year or more out when planning their product lines. AMD’s Ryzen 4000 APUs just came out. Even next year when Zen 4 is well known Apple would be looking at Zen 3 for transition.
Apple isn’t going AMD, ever. Why does these delusions continue?

Ideas is not the same as a specific feature that is available now like WiFi 6. WiFi 6 is spec bump which is basically what this update was. Seems kind of minor to leave out for a future update.

Because now, AMD has competitive products that people would like to see in Apple devices.

Just in time for Apple to go Arm! Good job AMD!

Basically, no one outside of this forum give two s**** what powers their Macs as everyone is going to learn when Apple moves to A-Series CPUs, IF they can give developers the right tools they need to make decent Catalyst apps AND convince them that doing so is in their best interest. If Apple can do that with iOS 14/iPadOS 14 and macOS 10.16 then absolutely no one that Apple is targeting will care.

AMD has the lead now, whether they keep it is an open question. That anyone here thinks it is a fait accompli simply has no clue how thing work in the little old CPU game. I give AMD two more quarters, three MAX before Intel is nipping at their heels.

Very disappointing, I was super excited about the 14" and thought It was going to be a performance beast along with cost savings compared to the 16". If you do some configuring you'll (probably) determine the 16" is the best choice for most use cases. Paying $667.80 more for 4 more cores and more screen real estate not to mention better speakers and mic... No question I'm getting the 16" MBP config below. I hope this helps someone, or you can wait for an undetermined amount of time for the "14 inch"...

13" 2020
$3009.34
32 GB RAM
2 TB Storage
2.3GHz 4-core 10th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.1GHz

16" 2019
$3,677.14
32 GB RAM
2 TB Storage
2.4GHz 8‑core 9th‑generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz

Difference $667.80 with education discount*

Sure it can be, I actually had this really annoying issue with an application that just wouldn't resize to a width of 640px. Also many websites switch to their mobile view at that width. The real question is: why settle with less than what is possible? That's the logic I don't understand. Why defend Apple here? Would you also argue it doesn't matter if they put a 0.6" smaller screen inside in the next generation?
Well, if you buy anything short of the 16" MBP then you'll be settling for less than what's possible.

I don’t know what’s so hard for people understand that everyone is on a different upgrade cycle. There are millions of people who bought computers between 2014 and 2018, and I’m sure a lot of them are ready for something new and this is perfect for them.

People think that everything new is geared towards people who upgrade often Lol.

Placed order for $1799 10th gen model and customized to i7 CPU and 1TB SSD. It was only later I realized there is a $1999 model that comes with a 1TB SSD. When that model is customized with the i7 CPU price is the same and otherwise they appear identical. Any reason to believe there is any difference between the $1799 and $1999 10th gen models other than base SSD size? Thanks.
Identical.

I got myself WiFi 6 router to increase download/upload speeds from my home NAS which is connected via 10Gbe interface. Benefits are huge, as I can download using my iPad Pro 2x faster over 802.11ax than ac. So isn't it enough good reason ? I'm totally disappointed I cannot have MacBook Pro with the chip which will allow me to fully benefit from my expensive router.

LoL, keep in mind some of us already have WiFi 6 routers and we want end devices which can fully benefit from it (like higher download/upload speeds).

I am in the same boat, just upgraded my Verizon FIOS with the new Wifi 6 router + extender.

Guess I will wait until end of the year to see if the magical 14" MBP unicorn will be released with wifi 6 capability.

If I was getting a new 13“ MacBook Pro, I would go for the high end model with the 512GB SSD. The low end models are just there to get you into the mood of buying..

Its been fun. My MacBook Pro 2011 15' has officially began its retirement as of today. Its been on various deployments and invaluable in my workflow and everyday life. Today I pulled the trigger and got in and purchased the 13' quad-core i7 w/ 1TB on the Apple online store. This should last me another 9-10 years. If they release and update in 6-12 months, I guess I'll trade my purchase from today. 🙃

To make things worse, the MacBook Air comes with 10th gen Intel processors too.
For CPU-intensive tasks the base 13" Pro with the 8th gen chip will be significantly faster than even the i7 Air with the 10th gen chips.

I honestly don't understand everyone's obsession with bezels. What's the practical difference in a couple of millimeters? It's certainly not going to affect my purchasing decisions.
I remember the same discussion when I was debating iPhone X vs iPhone 8, there was one gentleman who made the very same point about bezels and screen in both. I'm so happy I decided to go for X as it still looks fresh. For this reason I do not want to get 13 MBP with huge bezels as once we see 14 MPB the other one will look very old.

The difference will definitely not be great. The only reason to get the new Macbook Pro if you already have a modern MBP is the magic keyboard. Performance will not be very much different, at least not real world. Maybe sustained performance will be better when the laptop is on battery, but this is something that still needs to be checked.

I’d hold out until 2021. You’ve had it this long - might as well make it an even 10 years.
