Because now, AMD has competitive products that people would like to see in Apple devices.
Please stop with this mindset. Apple negotiated a pretty sweet deal with Intel for its chips. They won't get that same deal or a sweeter deal with AMD. In addition, AMD doesn't own their own fabs, so there is a supply issue there as well.

Apple will never move to AMD. They will move to ARM sooner than moving to AMD.

I don’t know what’s so hard for people understand that everyone is on a different upgrade cycle. There are millions of people who bought computers between 2014 and 2018, and I’m sure a lot of them are ready for something new and this is perfect for them.

People think that everything new is geared towards people who upgrade often Lol.

How do you not understand that the price Apple is asking for these machines is ridiculous? Old CPU from 2018, DDR3, WiFi 5, 720p webcam, thick bezels. This is unacceptable in 2020. Even the Air got the 10th gen chips, DDR4. It is called the MacBook PRO ffs, there's nothing Pro about it unless you pay a hefty $2000+. Don't try to justify this product, it is still a rip off.

If you want your money's worth buy the Air 2020 or 16inch Pro!

Apple isn’t going AMD, ever. Why does these delusions continue?
The fact that he used to work at Apple and came over to Apple via the NeXT acquisition is why I take him seriously but you have a point. It doesn't necessarily means he's right. There was another person on these forums who used to work at AMD and disagrees with him. Guess we'll know in about a year who's right.

Where do you get the 33-38% increase? This isn't between 10th and 8th gen, surely? That seems way too high an improvement in IPC for two generations.

EDIT: Indeed check the graph:
View attachment 912045
Quote from Anandtech: "This graph shows the single thread performance of Skylake and beyond, compared to 5th Gen Broadwell hardware. Right at the very end, we see Whiskey Lake performing +42% above Broadwell, and Ice Lake performing +47% above Broadwell. A quick calculation of 1.47/1.42 means that even Intel is only predicting an absolute gain of ~3.5% for Ice Lake over current generation systems."

Which (all else being equal) means that you'd need ~4.5 Ghz 10th gen to match a 4.7 Ghz 8th gen.
So the figures I was referring to were under SPEC2006 results where it states: "Performance per clock increases on the new Sunny Cove architecture are outstandingly good. IPC increases against the mobile Skylake are 33 and 38% in the integer and fp suites, though we also have to keep in d mind these figures go beyond just the Sunny Cove architecture and also include improvements through the new LPDDR4X memory controllers." It basically says a 3 GHz Ice Lake part would be around 33-38 percent faster than a 3 GHz Coffee Lake part. However, as I said in my post, Coffee Lake parts have a higher max turbo so the gap is shorter.

Later a bit down, it compares Ice Lake results to 9900K with 13%-14% increase but states that it is a desktop processor so comparing IPC kind of doesn't make sense (apples and oranges as he says).

The graph you posted is probably comparing a lower max turbo Ice Lake part (such as 4.1 GHz one in the 2020 MBP) to a higher max turbo Whiskey Lake part (such as 4.7 GHz on the last gen, tbf last gen was a Coffee Lake part) so it is not a comparison on the same processor speed (on the same GHz if you will) but rather at the same thermal envelope (at 15W). So on single core tests, we should expect somewhere around 10-15 percent bump (I said around 16% previously).

I have owned the Dell 17R model back in 2011. Awful laptop. I had multiple motherboard replacements, multiple hard drive replacements, and a new screen replacement in the first 12 months of ownership. Biggest piece of junk I ever owned.

I too am tempted by the XPS, not going to lie.

I mean, thats a very different laptop, a very different time, and a very different experience than the 2020 XPS lol

Windows computers have come a long way in what is almost a decade

Wow, super disappointed in this. Was excited to upgrade from my 2013 rMBP (ridiculous it has 8gb ram, 256 SSD + memory card reader, magsafe, same "new/updated" keyboard, and HDMI out from 7 yrs ago) if 14" etc. but guess I'll limp along until the next update as I have no real need to upgrade.

I'm in this boat myself. USB C is still not ubiquitous almost 5 years later, and USB A, HDMI and the SD card reader are incredibly handy

I had a new MBA thinking it would do away with this one but while I liked the computer, it didn't do anything differently that this 6 year old machine of mine (got mine from refurb store in 2014)

Still has 86% Battery health B)

Thanks ALL!! I'm going to contact them RIGHT NOW!

LOL. Wish me luck 😀

Just wanted to give anyone who was interested an update - I called Apple and they said “Sure you can return your current one as you’ve had it for under two weeks and we’ll replace it with the new one“.

However they said I’d need to go through another credit application with Barclays which might fail as I’d have had two finance applications within a couple of weeks.

So I went through another application... and surprisingly it went through OK! Yay!! Looks like I’m getting a new, new MacBook Pro. Now I need to find out how best to wipe my stuff from this ‘old’ MacBook before I return it...

This has to be the worst deal for 13 inch laptops. It just seems like an excuse “see how **** Intel is?”, we need to move to arm.

But still, a middle finger to the customers. Sooooo bad it physically hurts.

There is maybe a bit of stage setting but it is just the Tim Cook MO.

All of their product lines are the same now, the real latest technology is there but at jacked up price points and then you get the poverty models at the lower end, see two TB port MBP, iPhone SE and the 10.2 iPad, these items purely exist because the latest and greatest iPhone/iPad/MBP have gotten so expensive

I think my post COMPLETELY went over your head. I never said that the prices of the new machines are justified and nowhere in my post did I justify them.....

If I was buying an Apple notebook it would be a 16” Pro. Point blank.

HOWEVER, there are people with 3-7 year old notebooks who don’t mind getting the entry level Pro. Should Apple have beefed them up? Of course. They’re still gonna sell millions though.

I wish Tim would have kept this close to his heart:

Some "update" you've got there, Apple. Pay more for an 8th gen processor, still with huge bezels and Wifi 5!

These specs are frankly embarassing at this price point in mid-2020. Hard pass.

If they would've just used the 9th gen CPU (at least) with DDR4 and WiFi 6, I would definitely recommended this laptop to people.

Everything I wanted! 500gig base SSD, 16gig RAM, new 10th gen CPU, new keyboard. But why no WiFi 6???? Why oh why.

Since I plan to keep my next MacBook for 8-10 years this is a deal breaker. One more year of waiting. Oh well.

It was one bad example of my experience with Dell. I've had some issues with them with other products too. But the 17R was the worst one and it left a really bitter aftertaste. I know they're known to have terrible customer service too.

But it's voltage limited so the 8th gen processor in the base 13" Pro is faster.

But aren't the 10th gens on the Air meant to be more efficient and give better battery life than the Pro does? For me, the Air might work really good, but I am leaning towards the Pro in case if I need extra processing power down the road.

Or are the differences in battery life nominal?

Can I remove the SSD storage?
Spending a lot of money to upgrade storage soldered to the logic board doesn't make sense.
If either one fails outside the warranty period you're in for a very expensive repair.
Soldered RAM **might** be OK.
Soldered storage, absolute nonsense.

For CPU-intensive tasks the base 13" Pro with the 8th gen chip will be significantly faster than even the i7 Air with the 10th gen chips.

Definitely, the Pro is meant for more powerful tasks. But the energy efficiency of the 10th gen i5 on the Air is intriguing because it's meant to be a slightly longer battery life. I also mentioned it being nominal in another post. Sorry for the break up of the replies.

Not surprised Apple kept with the 13" size, glad they didn't go with 14".

As for CPUs... disappointed about the low and mid entry machines - still using two year old CPUs :-(.

Nice 512GB on the storage for mid and high end machine.. finally stopped with the 256GB crap.

Wireless is still stuck on 802.11ac Wi‑Fi, and still Bluetooth 5.0 :-(. Ugh. ****** decisions.... doesn't look so great after all.

The highest MBA 2020 scores on the Geekbench 5 browser for Single/Multicore is: 1101 / 2840 respectively, while the MBP 13” scores 1105 / 4200 ~ and that’s with a 2019 Intel Core i7-8569U @ 2.8 GHz (4 cores). Sure there is room for variable error but in the real world the real takeaway would be continuous heavy loads (I hope). What we cannot yet see is the new iGPU performance which Apple claims is 40% better with Adobe Photoshop.

Bluetooth 5.0 is just fine ... not much else to gain with Bluetooth 5.1 that you'd really use with today's smartphones, headphones (esp Apple's ecosystem). 802.11ax would be nice yet I'm betting not a lot of people or public Wi-Fi or corporations upgraded their APs using this new tech as of yet. A wild guess.

Biggest takeaways are ...
Keyboard - a working and reliable one!
10th gen i5/i7 cpus, with 8MB shared L3 cache on the i7 chip (vs 6MB on the older models)

Hold UP: ... the 2020 Air has this same option on the i7 chip as well :O
The Air's page specifically minimizes talk of the i7 chip, almost to hide the value!!

4 Thunderbolt connections vs 2.
I'm not certain about the screen pixels though between the two.

Although similarly spec'd 2020 Air is cheaper than the 13" Pro ... somehow under high demand or rigorous testing the Pro may fare better. I hope.

Now ... released on May 4th ... May the 4TH Be with You Mac-a-lites in case you make the wrong decision lol.

Also ... did the Air marketing team steal an idea for their landing page from Nike's Air Jordan 4 launch? ;)

There aren’t any 9th generation chips appropriate for the 13” Pro. They could have used the 10th generation 15W i5-1035G7.

But Geekbench doesn’t demonstrate sustained CPU performance. If you are exporting a large video the Pro with the 8th gen chip will handily outperform the Air with the i7. The latter will be faster at opening up apps, etc. (ie tasks that need to temporarily boost the CPU for very short periods of time).

I bought the refurb MBP 16" last month and was worried that if I had made a bad choice instead of waiting for the 14" - this announcement actually makes the refurbed 16" totally worth it. Still surprised that they didnt even upgrade the speakers or even the webcam at the very least. I guess its their top selling product and they know ppl will still buy them in droves.

Grr no 14 inch screen and stil the same wide bezel. And no upgraded camera. One would think the camera upgrade would have been easy. Bet they try to suck people into buying next years model with those exact features as they get eye dropper-ed out to the public.
