Definitely, the Pro is meant for more powerful tasks. But the energy efficiency of the 10th gen i5 on the Air is intriguing because it's meant to be a slightly longer battery life. I also mentioned it being nominal in another post. Sorry for the break up of the replies.

The Air does get better battery life with a smaller and lighter battery. For most users it is a good choice.

Now maybe it is not relevant. But if you pay 2k dollars you might want something more futureproof.
Rich people might be changing laptops every 2 years, but most of us who purchase a laptop for 5-7 years of use want
to be sure that their laptop will still be relevant in 5 years from now.
Wifi 6 will be outdated by the end of the year.

Can I remove the SSD storage?
Spending a lot of money to upgrade storage soldered to the logic board doesn't make sense.
If either one fails outside the warranty period you're in for a very expensive repair.
Soldered RAM **might** be OK.
Soldered storage, absolute nonsense.

Get used to it. Ever since Apple introduced the T2 chip in its MacBooks, the SSD has been soldered on and irreplaceable.

In addition, there are very few instances that the SSD will fail. You will be more likely to replace the laptop with a newer one than the SSD failing.

One does not have to get used to this. People can buy a laptop with replaceable SSD. For example. Dell XPS 13:

Fortunately for tinkerers, cracking open the bottom panel is just as easy as before and with a new surprise: the SSD is now easily upgradeable if so desired unlike on the XPS 13 7390 2-in-1 or last generation 7390 clamshell. Dell says the move was partly inspired by the vocal user base and also for easier in-house servicing should any be required.

"Inspired by user base"? Wow! Apparently some companies still listen to their user base.

What I meant was, if you are shopping for a MacBook and are locked into Apple's ecosystem, you will have to get used to it.

The entry models aren't very exciting, but the top end is IMO.

latest-gen CPUs, faster memory and 32 GB!

How does the 3.0GB/s SSD compare with previous generations and the new mac air?
The SSDs on the Airs are around 1.2GB/s on the 512GB model. On the 2019, they were about 2.0GB/s on the 512GB model.

Ideas is not the same as a specific feature that is available now like WiFi 6. WiFi 6 is spec bump which is basically what this update was. Seems kind of minor to leave out for a future update.
Oh yes we did. Some of the stuff we did was a joke. And obviously this isn’t a spec bump thing if people are not buying it because it lacks it.

i'll stick with my 2011 13 inch which has a magic keyboard standard before "magic keyboard" was even thought of as a marketing phrase! 320 gb of old school hard drive which has never caused a problem. oh, even has an inverted T (as well as superdrive, ethernet, usb, firewire, thunderbolt 1, mini-displayport, and magsafe power cord)!!!!!

For me, my usage will end up being the following: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Tableau, emails, web browsing, media consumption, research, Python, etc.

I think a 16gb RAM Air and i5 can do that well for the next 5 years?

Pretty disappointing. I was expecting to want to return my 2020 MBA for this, but honestly, I feel my MBA is a better deal.
First world problems..
People like you are one reason why return policies get worse year by year and I would not be surprised if even Apple stops accepting this unnecessary environmental and financial cost.
Just use your f... MBA and stop buying stuff you don’t really need or even what.

Wow, I may be late to the party but the 13" never offered a discreet GPU option? Also, did they kill off the MacBook Esc with the last gen or is this the first gen that's all MacBook Emojibar?

I have a 2017 12” MacBook 256 gb m3, great condition, if I trade it thru apple toward a pro they offer $375 torn whether to go this route or do it thru swappa or something

Yes, it should work for that.

I was hoping Apple would be on to a killer 14” model this year.

Once you take out the 2 based models you’re sitting at $700 AUD difference to get the entry level 16”....

The highest MBA 2020 scores on the Geekbench 5 browser for Single/Multicore is: 1101 / 2840 respectively, while the MBP 13” scores 1105 / 4200 ~ and that’s with a 2019 Intel Core i7-8569U @ 2.8 GHz (4 cores). Sure there is room for variable error but in the real world the real takeaway would be continuous heavy loads (I hope). What we cannot yet see is the new iGPU performance which Apple claims is 40% better with Adobe Photoshop.

Bluetooth 5.0 is just fine ... not much else to gain with Bluetooth 5.1 that you'd really use with today's smartphones, headphones (esp Apple's ecosystem). 802.11ax would be nice yet I'm betting not a lot of people or public Wi-Fi or corporations upgraded their APs using this new tech as of yet. A wild guess.

Biggest takeaways are ...
Keyboard - a working and reliable one!
10th gen i5/i7 cpus, with 8MB shared L3 cache on the i7 chip (vs 6MB on the older models)

Hold UP: ... the 2020 Air has this same option on the i7 chip as well :O
The Air's page specifically minimizes talk of the i7 chip, almost to hide the value!!

4 Thunderbolt connections vs 2.
I'm not certain about the screen pixels though between the two.

Although similarly spec'd 2020 Air is cheaper than the 13" Pro ... somehow under high demand or rigorous testing the Pro may fare better. I hope.

Now ... released on May 4th ... May the 4TH Be with You Mac-a-lites in case you make the wrong decision lol.

Also ... did the Air marketing team steal an idea for their landing page from Nike's Air Jordan 4 launch? ;)
I have the 2020 MBA with i7 and it's pretty much the most underwhelming upgrade. Barely 6-7% improvement in real life due to severe power/heat constraints on the CPU that's limited to 10 watts continuous/12 watts boost power.

My wife has graciously accepted my i7 MBA and I've placed an order for an "Ultimate edition" (This is the version which would be usually stocked at Apple retail stores, but of course cover...) i7/32/2TB with delivery date in 10-14 days. The other configurations are at least 3 weeks away.

Garbage update.
Updated internals and called it a day.
Another "pro" machine without a dedicated GPU, the smoke is strong.
Timmy style.

I got myself WiFi 6 router to increase download/upload speeds from my home NAS which is connected via 10Gbe interface. Benefits are huge, as I can download using my iPad Pro 2x faster over 802.11ax than ac. So isn't it enough good reason ? I'm totally disappointed I cannot have MacBook Pro with the chip which will allow me to fully benefit from my expensive router.

LoL, keep in mind some of us already have WiFi 6 routers and we want end devices which can fully benefit from it (like higher download/upload speeds).
Hopefully your expensive WiFi 6 router can be upgraded for the new standard🤞 Otherwise you bought a soon to be outdated door stop.
