It’s so funny how the Apple bashing trolls are always the first comments in any article. They truly are trolling constantly and once anything comes up they do their thing and bash it immediately. Then gradually as you scroll down the trolls are replaced with the intelligent educated and super informed posts which everyone appreciates. So funny.
You call them "Apple bashing trolls'. I see many of them as those who are not blinded by the Apple Light and see things in a more realistic light...as in comparing features and prices with other manufacturers.

If you're happy spending $1800 for a 10th-gen i5 MBP13 then go for it. But for most people in the know, that is a rip-off especially when you can get a 10th-gen i5 Dell laptop for $500. It's not an expensive CPU and Apple should have included it in ALL the models that are part of today's refresh.

i7/32/2TB with delivery date in 10-14 days. The other configurations are at least 3 weeks away.

Thanks for the heads up! I cancelled my order and decided to go with the 2TB. It’s only a week or two earlier, but I was already on the fence to upgrade to more storage (originally went with 1TB) so this is all the motivation I needed to push me over the edge.

I have a 2017 12” MacBook 256 gb m3, great condition, if I trade it thru apple toward a pro they offer $375 torn whether to go this route or do it thru swappa or something
Definitely Swappa. Not only does Apple’s trade-in partner tend to lowball, they look for any excuse to reduce the offer once they have your notebook in hand.

Dell wants $1749 for the XPS 13 with 15W i7 that is somewhat slower than (but broadly comparable to) the 28W i5 that the $1799 MacBook Pro ships with, configured with 16 GB and 512 GB. Not sure where your “$500” comes from.

The Dell XPS is a great PC, and offers a touchscreen, though it has a lower base resolution. But it is priced comparably to the comparable MacBook Pro.

I wonder how bad the thermal issues are on the Air?
The thermals are fine for the chip it has. It isn’t intended to run at more than 12W for an extended time, so if you push the CPU it tends to settle around 1.5 GHz for the i5, while the base 13” Pro can sustain around 2.9GHz for an extended time (I don’t know about the 28W but it should be good since the “base” is 2.0 GHz).

Either way, Dell tech support absolutely SUCKS. I worked on them and would never buy one.

Any new machine I buy I'm planning to last 5 years or so, so having BT6, Wifi6 would be better. You are talking about today and current devices, but Bluetooth 6, 802.11ax will be widespread in the near future. I could buy a 802.11ax router today and benefit from higher throughput speeds by having a machine that supports 802.11ax.

Bluetooth 5.0 is just fine ... not much else to gain with Bluetooth 5.1 that you'd really use with today's smartphones, headphones (esp Apple's ecosystem). 802.11ax would be nice yet I'm betting not a lot of people or public Wi-Fi or corporations upgraded their APs using this new tech as of yet. A wild guess.

Wi-Fi 6 is a bigger deal than BT 5.1.

And? Why bezels matters to you? It's idiotic.

I agree, but most Mac users care more about what the product looks like than performance under the hood.

They kept 8th gen Intel processors? Why?! That literally makes zero sense.

Probably because they have a multi-year contract with Intel. And they can get them for literally pocket change. Intel sells low end 10th Gen CPUs for under $100.

High end 8th Gen CPUs like that in the 13” Pro still outperform the low-end 10th Gen.

I agree that Apple probably signed a long-term deal with Intel. That’s why they can’t just “switch to AMD Ryzen” because AMD has finally produced a decent mobile chip.

I’m guessing the 14” models aren’t coming until 2021?

And then there’s talk of the ARM MacBook line that is in the works... I’m wondering if these 2020 MPBs will the last of the classic 13” Intel MacBook Pros.

Getting close that’s for sure. That’s one reason why I’m jumping into a spec’d out model of this year’s 13”. It’s a very polished machine at this point. Nothing groundbreaking new, but solid improvements to the point where it’s basically perfect.

Nope. You won't see ARM in the Pro line for a long while.

Probably true, but Apple is known to take the leap sooner than most expect. Removing headphone jack as one example. Granted moving to ARM is a bit of a different ballgame. But I also suspect Apple to remove all ports from iPhones here soon too. ARM is coming to the Pro line eventually and boy oh boy do I want to have a large bag of popcorn at the ready when it does. Internet trolls will be lighting up these forums.

AC+ is 3, isn’t it. Besides, regardless of repair cost, it’s a royal pain to get a computer repaired.
It is not AC+ related, just the keyboard guarantee for 4 years since purchase date.

WIFI6: You'd still performance improvements on your internal network and therefore internet ( depending on your current speed ). At the moment, I get around 250 - 300 mbps using Wifi, but while on ethernet, around 900mbps up / down. So I'd welcome a machine with WIFI 6 + WIFI 6 Router for improved network speeds - both internal and external.

This is Apple, you shouldn't expect much regarding GPUs, especially in 13" machines.

#WiFi-Engineer here
You should be able to get 600+ easily on 802.11n, not even counting 802.11ac. You have other WiFi problems that 802.11ax (“WiFi 6”) wont fix.

I need to replace my ancient 2010 MBP (yes, still runs... barely). My budget is $1500-1800. I do some light video/music editing and simple gaming. Mainly, I want this thing to last 6-7 years minimum. Which should I get?

MB Air 1.1 GHz Quad i5 (10th gen) - 16 GB Mem - 512 GB SSD ($1499)
MB Air 1.2 GHz Quad i7 (10th gen) - 16 GB Mem - 512 GB SSD ($1649)
13" MBP 1.4 GHz Quad Core i5 (8th gen) - 16 GB Mem - 512 GB SSD ($1599)
13" MBP 2.0 Ghz Quad Core i5 (10th gen) - 16 GB Mem - 512 GB SSD ($1799)

Overall, I'm sad this upgrade for the MBP didn't include an upgraded camera (720p... really?) and up it to 14". I'll have to buy something soon. So these 4 are what I'm looking at.

I'm thinking about a similar lineup. And if it makes you feel any better, I'm still using the original Unibody Macbook (2008). I did double the ram to 8 gb and swap in an SSD several years ago which made a big difference, but it's for sure on it's last legs and the battery is crap. I often just use my Dell I have from work at this point.

My point wasn't to compare feature-for-feature the $500 Dell to the new MBP13, it's to point out the 10th-Gen i5 is NOT a CPU only for higher end laptops! It's in a friggin' $500 laptop from Dell!

But if you want to compare brand new model Dell to brand new model Apple, there is this from Dell's new XPS 13 9300 line:
2020-05-04_18-29-59.jpg

Inlcuding WIFI6, and as you see, a 1TB SSD and the same fast DDR4 RAM. $28 more than the crappy base model 2020 MBP13.
