Innovation... lol
musical chairs now since apple no longer innovates
Can't innovate my ass!

Seriously the iPad isn't a priority for Apple and the lack of innovation shows it.

they are masters at getting rid of old stockpiled parts/equipment....but Apple magically calls it innovation ;)

You are all missing the point of the product, which is a low cost iPad to help curb sliding sales. It's not meant to be an "innovative" product.

Indeed - whether or not you believe their products are world-class, Apple's marketing and sales department is the best in the world.

The reaction to this device is, like the devices themselves, very similar to the reactions to the iPhone SE over the 5/5S/6S which that was a hybrid of. Positive from people who value the low price option, negative from people who don't get that and seemingly only ever want ever-more powerful and expensive devices than anything released before.

I think it's great that Apple are bringing back proven hardware in a new combination at a lower price.

I would love a Mac Pro SE that took this approach - up to date specs in the old 5,1 form factor for a budget price... yes please.

And not to get into political stuff, but given the UK (where I am)'s political/economic situation, it's especially important if Apple wants to retain its level of sales here, because the price rises on existing products threatens to seriously damage Apple in the UK IMHO. Of course so does having ancient computers at those inflated prices too, but that's a whole other issue by itself.

I agree with you. BTW when i read "Mac Pro SE" I immediately pictured a 1987 Mac SE with modern internals :D

Ill take an Air 2 over this...Don't really see why anyone would get this over the Air 2.....

You might have a point with the software. But hardware wise the Pros are nicely innovative and there really isn't any comparison to them for ARM based tablets. Why you're complaining about "innovation" on Apple's quietly released, low cost, budget iPad, we'll never know.
Well we do know- people love to complain whether there are grounds for it or not.

Anyone know if all the controls and cutouts (volume buttons, power, microphone holes, speaker holes, etc.) align in the same locations as the iPad Air? I'm hoping to be able to use my old leather smart case (which is no longer manufactured) for this iPad if I decide to buy it.

This makes for a nice, cheap replacement for my Mom's 6 year old iPad 2. No complaints here. I use a Pro and they really needed to do this, to differentiate the product lines a bit more.

So calling it a fifth-gen iPad is half correct (the iPad Air was the successor to the 4th-gen iPad).

The thing that's genius with this, is that the "updates" for it can now be features the Air 2 already has, so they can go back in time and tout upgraded features on the iPad (v2) in a year that are 3 years old. LOL.

Lots of bitching, but I like this idea. Slap new components into an old shell to keep the price down.

I like having options when it comes to product line pricing. This is perfect for someone that doesn't need all the bells and whistles, yet requires something fast and usable. This is similar to what Apple does with they do small updates to the MacBook line. Keep it coming!

Stock price is at an all time high. Even though we hate how Apple is operating and not innovating, they're raking in the dollars. It's too bad this how all businesses eventually hit the pits. They're lucky no one else has anything better, but as soon as they do, Apple won't be able to keep investors happy while introducing better but less profitable products.

Now that I have read all your critical comments I think you may have all missed the main point. This is a product that is available essentially worldwide immediately and at a lower price point. It addresses the primary concerns of the target market for the product. Early availability and lower cost. I don't particularly care who agrees with me or not, but as a stockholder that's what I notice from this.
