Ill take an Air 2 over this...Don't really see why anyone would get this over the Air 2.....

Cheaper, faster, brighter screen, potentially longer software updates.

On the other side there is a more reflective screen, slightly thicker and heavier form.

It is a choice, depending on your priorities.

The iPad's naming structure has been such a mess. iPad, iPad 2, the new iPad, iPad with Retina Display, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad

It looks so stupid but I like that they have finally sorted it out. Makes sense to have an iPad Mini line, an iPad line, and an iPad Pro line.
The "air" line made sense back then when the iPad 4 was thick and heavy, though it clearly hasn't aged well when every subsequent iPad has been thinner and lighter.

I think in the future, we won't see an iPad mini line either. Just normal 9.7" iPad, 9.7" iPad pro and larger iPad pro.

I like having options when it comes to product line pricing. This is perfect for someone that doesn't need all the bells and whistles, yet requires something fast and usable.

Stop being reasonable. You'll make people explode into flames.

I have an iPad 4. I've been thinking of replacing it since it is only something I use on occasion for special purposes like as a second monitor for my MBP when I'm traveling. I can't justify the cost of an iPad Pro, but this is a bit more within reach. I'm still not compelled to move on from my iPad 4 yet, but if I did, this might be what I'd be going for.

The "new" iPad, for all intents and purposes, will run more smoothly than competitors products at the lowest price point they've been able to offer. They aren't shipping junk. They are shipping a product that's been very successful for them with newer components to make it a 2017 device. My original iPad Air is STILL a premium device when I compare it to other tablets at Best Buy. You know what's starting to make it feel old? The internals. Hence, the birth of the "new" iPad.

And it'll have that same plasticy hollow sound whenever you touch the screen that people looooooooved so much about the Air 1. Apple's courage is never-ending.

COME ON people. If you don't like this iPad, don't buy it. Buy an iPad Pro. Some of us welcome a well-performing iPad at a low price point. If Apple has to cut a few corners to make it, then so what? It's either that, or this low price point is not met. This isn't rocket science.

The iPhone SE was a bit different - when it was released, it featured Apple's best processor available at the time (the A9), not a previous generation. And it matched the majority of the features of the flagship model(s) at the time - the 6S and 6S+. Right down to the 2GB RAM, Apple Pay, etc. That's why the SE has been such a successful product.. it felt like a deliberate release with the latest high spec for a bargain price, in a form factor that many still regard as the last decent iPhone form factor/feel in the hand.

This new iPad is deliberately a repackaging of slightly older specification, relative to the current generation of CPU, iPad screen, etc.
That's not necessarily a bad thing.. it's probably a good move actually. But it's not the same as the iPhone SE.

Didn’t Steve say that Apple was in the business of making the best possible products, not in the business of racing to the bottom?
Steve said that before there were hundred of millions of iPhones and iPad out there along with tond of other smartphones that look similar. Plus Android has gotten much better in the years since Steve passed. In 2010-2011, they were still pretty much garbage.

I could not deal with a non-laminated display. And even cheap phones / tablets nowadays have laminated display. I doubt that price was the main reason for the iPad to not have a laminated display, I think they fear cannibalization of the iPad Pro line.

Kind of a sad move.

This will be big for education, apple is losing to chromebooks and I think this is a shot to try to get that share back.
$329 for what is a powerful tablet is very good. Its not like the screen is bad on the air 1 anyway.

That being said I am fine with my Air 2 for a while.

Apple using the IPad as entry level (329) and the pro (599).
You do realized this is a budget device made to bring people in. THATS IT. don't over analyze it.
Basically like the MacBook - a smaller, lighter, cheaper, premium product.

The iPad line is now Seperated into Regular and Pro, Iphone will soon join the ranks.

Only then will we see a cleaner lineup

In other words, after 2 years they've been able to make 1 laptop and re-release their iPhone and iPad.
Yeah, big plans.. can't wait for that TV and Car they're working on.

Lol. In the last two years Apple has released new iMacs, two new generations of MacBooks, new MacBook pros, iPhone 6s, SE, and 7, two new iPad Pro models and now this iPad, new Apple TV hardware, new wireless headphones, and a new watch model.

That's just the hardware side. On software they have made big advancements as well.

Sure there are things I wish Apple would do differently but don't act like they haven't done anything in two years just because they have ignored the Mac Pro and mini.

It has been very evident that Apple is more of a profit making company as opposed to a technology company who made great products for the consumers, since Steve departed our lives the companies focus changed. Although like many I'm disappointed in the direction Apple has gone but if we keep making the products sell in record number Apple will continue to follow this trend...... It also appears other Tech companies are struggling to bring a product to the market which give us the WOW factor !!!

This is extreme recycling.....

How do you make money with your leftovers? You sell them as "New item"!
Plus Android has gotten much better in the years since Steve passed. In 2010-2011, they were still pretty much garbage.

Android was great then, and it is AWESOME today.... iOS was Awesome back then making Android look like it was meh, but ios is still Awesome today.

They let Android catch up...it is Apple's fault if they lost the margin.

Our (ie. tech consumers) need for the WOW factor has become unrealistic in many ways.

The reaction to this device is, like the devices themselves, very I would love a Mac Pro SE that took this approach - up to date specs in the old 5,1 form factor for a budget price... yes please.
I doubt they'd ever do this, but if they did, it would be an instant buy from me!
