Steve returned and simplified the confusing product lines of the "old Apple" (pre-1998).

I'm sure that people (i.e., we techies) in 1995 used to think Apple was great because of all the choices they had.

But that actually turned out to be quite a detriment, and intimidated the mainstream consumers away from buying Apple.

Just look at us right now for all the proof you need.

Tend to agree. . . the issue was that in the early 90's chip speeds were
Thanks for the info! Definitely getting this!

let me know if you find one. . . . none available on the website or within 250 miles.

Hence the price, no complains.

it is really weird tho as this is the most un-Apple thing Apple did.

Exactly. People complain, but when I told some relatives about it, they were all over the prices. They don't care about the laminated screen or the *insert design or feature here*, they want to upgrade they're old iPad and not pay that much. For just a little over 300, they're all sold on it instantly.

I'm glad to see it does actually have 2GB RAM. This is the first time I've seen it confirmed.
Should provide a decent split-screen experience then. Or the, hopefully, improved multi-tasking in a future iOS release. (iOS 11, pretty please.)
Looks like a great budget purchase! :)

This iPad seems to be the antithesis of the Apple ethos. " We believe that we’re on the face of the Earth to make great products." This iPad isn't a great product. It's a compromise. That said, it's a smart compromise. The tablet market is declining... for numerous reasons. If this "budget" iPad can help stave off that decline for Apple, why wouldn't they do it? The vast majority of tablets are consumption devices. This new iPad is an adequate consumption device. It may not live up to the aforementioned ethos, but it's a decision that helps the business. Apple, first and foremost, is a business. Some of us seem to think otherwise. Would I buy this iPad? Hahahahaha.... uh, no. Is this tablet a bad decision by Apple? Again, no. If people could separate Apple the business from their idealized version of Apple, they'd be much better off. imo, of course. I like some of the things from Apple the business. That Apple the Great version... I'm a fan of fiction, just not that much fiction.

I'm kind of tempted to buy the new iPad - it looks like great value. And it would be my first iPad since buying an iPad 2 many years ago, which still gets used fairly regularly in our household.

However: The inability to have multiple users (and thus individual email accounts, safari password keychains, etc) is really holding me back. It makes the iPad hugely less useful in a family/household setting. I really hope Apple will finally sort this out in iOS 11.

This makes for a nice, cheap replacement for my Mom's 6 year old iPad 2. No complaints here. I use a Pro and they really needed to do this, to differentiate the product lines a bit more.

Completely agree and for my mum's iPad 2 as well! Maybe I'm a sucker, but it would feel weird giving her an 'expensive' iPad Pro when she only uses it for email, online banking, FaceTime etc. Good move at the price.

I for one would like to see Apple have a line of lower end products. Too many people I know would love to have an iPhone, iPad or Macbook but can't because they are too expensive. A "budget line" of products would be excellent because it would get these people into the ecosystem whereas otherwise they would buy Android or Microsoft-powered products.

Apple has been moving in this direction slowly; this iPad is the first indication that they are pushing harder towards this strategy. The iPhone SE is another example of a relatively affordable Apple product that has been a hit.

In a way, I don't mind this.

Given what we've seen with Apple the last few years when it comes to 'innovation', a 'basic' upgrade at a lower price is kind of nice and would suit my needs more as a casual consumption device.

If I was to replace my ipad Air with another ipad, this would be the model I'd go for as I don't need any of the 'guff' on the higher models such as the stylus.

Unfortunately Steve is dead and so is Apple's ability to innovate.

I love it when people say this. We've had truely wireless headphones, Apple Pay, Apple Watch, groundbreaking chip design, 3D Touch, a whole bunch of amazing pieces of software including multiple OS's and a whole bunch of other stuff that happens behind the scenes.

Innovation doesn't have to be in your face to be there.

Ill take an Air 2 over this...Don't really see why anyone would get this over the Air 2.....
Because it's an updated version of the iPad Air 2 for a cheaper price. A more power efficient A9 processor would increase battery life over the iPad Air 2, as well as a bump from 16GB to 32GB for an even cheaper price. More for less. In almost every way better than the iPad Air 2.

I'll disagree with you about it being an updated version of the iPad Air . It's an amalgamation of the Air and Air . It's definitely an updated version of the Air. That de-laminated screen with no anti-glare coating really can't be considered an update.

you guys are familiar with my posts and ive made enough excuses for apple but a race to the bottom isn't the answer.

i truly feel a new ipad OS would make us flock back to our big iphones er i mean iPads.

Like many of you, I'm recommending this for my father who is still rocking the iPad 2.

but his ipad still works. does he want to just toss $329 in the air?

Didn’t Steve say that Apple was in the business of making the best possible products, not in the business of racing to the bottom?

But Wall Street expects exponential growth or it will kill the stock price. Introducing a low-cost iPad that is substantially the same as a three-year old model is a way to temporarily increase revenue in a shrinking segment, but at what cost? Apple got to where it is now because of three innovative products, the iPod, the iPhone, and the iPad. Yes, Macs are a good product but Apple just about went bankrupt making computers until Steve Jobs came back, simplified the product line, and innovated with the iPod & iTunes. It is worth noting that the iPod line is effectively dead now as the iPhone completely disrupted that market.

Apple is trying to continue to grow revenues at its previous decade's rate in an ever increasingly commoditized market. Two ways to accomplish that; lower prices (works in the short term only as you race to the bottom) or introduce a new innovative product. Hopefully someone within Apple has some ideas for the next great market disrupting product because it seems like Tim Cook keeps putting lipstick on a pig, calling it "Pro" or "Edition" and jacking up the price with no appreciable increase in capabilities.

Apple is far from being doomed. But still, it's kinda sad that the "Newest" hardware is based on designs from 2013 and in Software the latest flagship OS features is the ability to find an optional accessory and the ability to turn off an unreliable feature in the Watch.

I miss Apple...

The iPad's naming structure has been such a mess. iPad, iPad 2, the new iPad, iPad with Retina Display, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad

It looks so stupid but I like that they have finally sorted it out. Makes sense to have an iPad Mini line, an iPad line, and an iPad Pro line.

I think in the future (two or three years) they will just have the iPad and this will be in three different display sizes. All iPads will have smart connectors and can be used with Apple Pencil.

I think the naming of the iPads has really lacked any consistent direction from Apple. Whoever is in charge of the hardware and marketing is likely most responsible.

I won't buy this new iteration of the iPad but I'm pleased that Apple has really lowered the price of its flagship tablet which should help them compete and keep more of their consumers in their ecosystem

All the bellyaching in this thread bugs me, how the hell would Steve run the company any differently honestly? He himself said that the desktop's days were numbered with the iPad.

The main argument for the switch to Chromebooks in the education sector was the price, which Apple simply didn't have.
Then when they release a low-cost iPad (probably to counter the Chromebook, since Tim's obsessed with positioning the iPad as an ultrabook replacement), people groan about it not being "innovative" enough.
