I'm not at all surprised by this. Using the same blueprint as the original iPad Air means low manufacturing costs, and bigger profits for Apple.

I know this is a joke about Apple's lack of tons of new features or whatever, but I think after the 5S major everyday performance improvements started to die down. I think technology just hit the point that, so long as botchy software isn't messing with things, an A7 is more than the average person needs anymore. Or at least I can hardly tell a difference between my 5S and iP7+ anyway performance-wise

You can't tell a difference in performance from 5s to 7+??? It was absolutely night and day for me.

And I'm kinda curious what realistic features people want in these devices that will come in at a affordable price.

If they didn't update the Air, people would be complaining, they did a refresh and people are complaining. It's clear when they came out this was to be the cheaper model. They didn't abandon it, they gave it a faster processor AND dropped the price.

I'm also not sure why all the complaints. Some people don't need the most powerful iPad. I've got an iPad 2 that does everything terrible except, for some reason, Netflix. But that's all that I use it for anyway. At this price point, it finally makes sense to think about trading in the iPad 2 for whatever pennies I can get for it and upgrade for some future proofing. Buying a new iPad wasn't even on the roadmap at the previous prices.

Yep, it's turned into a fashion company now. Pro users? WHAT? .. no cli for you! who needs a file system.. get out!

"File system" I presume you incorrectly mean "file browser" for iOS. I'm sure you're fully clued up on the fantastic and brand new APFS which debuted in beta for macOS Sierra and launched with iOS a few days ago - the biggest change and advancement in file systems since HFS 20 years ago.

I'm curious about the brighter display.
Compared to what? If is brighter than Air 2 I can forget the lack of anti reflective coating and go for the new model

And it turned out to be one of the best iPhones Apple have released.
The SE has a distinct advantage over the other available iPhones for many people (the compact form factor). The new iPad has no advantage at all over the existing models, and is a step back with regard to weight and display quality.

I'm really tempted to snap up another Air 2, but store inventories are already drying up. I don't see one anywhere below the original price.

1.5 years since they updated the iMac
2.5 years since they updated the Mac Mini
3.5 (almost) years since they updated the MacPro
The Cinema Displays are discontinued...
The AirPorts are discontinued...
1.5 years since they updated the iPads
xxx years since iPods got any real attention

And this is what comes out of that fabulous pipeline. Innovation or vacation over at Apple?

They are riding that phone hard.

The iPad's naming structure has been such a mess. iPad, iPad 2, the new iPad, iPad with Retina Display, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad

It looks so stupid but I like that they have finally sorted it out. Makes sense to have an iPad Mini line, an iPad line, and an iPad Pro line.

Agree with all of this.

It's basically an original Air?

The tablet's tech specs are otherwise identical to the iPad Air 2, including a display resolution of 2,048‑by‑1,536 at 264 PPI, 8-megapixel rear iSight camera, 1.2-megapixel front FaceTime camera, two speakers, Lightning connector, 3.5mm headphone jack, Touch ID with Apple Pay, and Bluetooth 4.2.

Seems like a misleading headline to me. The new iPad is a hybrid of the Air and Air 2. It's not basically anything except that it is the most basic iPad which is exactly what its intended to be.

The only things that really NEED updating on that list are the Mac mini and Mac Pro. I'd love to see both, especially the Mac mini as I really want some new low power macOS server hardware at home but these two are probably the lowest profit earners in the company and as someone who runs a business myself I know its hard to devote 25% of your resources to something that makes 0.001% of your income...you tend to just drop it.

I don't like it, but I understand it - and my opinion this is why having the iPhone such a massive success is bad for us Apple fans.

They are complaining because the Air 2 exists. So the new "iPad" should be the form factor of the Air 2, lower priced, with all the same options, with a slightly faster 2017 chip. A mid-range iPad for those who don't need the Pro, the Pencil, etc.

I fail to see why this is so hard to understand. Apple reverted to a tablet they themselves improved upon, and did away with the improved version everyone knows. lol.

So now if you want the Air 2 option, you're forced to spend EXTRA on the Pro.

Steve returned and simplified the confusing product lines of the "old Apple" (pre-1998).
That turned out to be good for Apple, at that time, 20 years ago.
Apple is a much larger company today.
You expect them to keep following a policy from 20 years ago?
As history has shown, Jobs was known to change his mind or reverse directions occasionally.
Since he is no longer here, there is no telling what he would be doing with product lineups in the 2000's
snip...But that actually turned out to be quite a detriment, and intimidated the mainstream consumers away from buying Apple.
You have some supporting evidence for this claim?
Just look at us right now for all the proof you need.
Who is "us" and what is this proof?

I would like to see some Macs with this philosophy

Last year or before box, new(ish) CPU/GPU and competitive pricing (I don't except lowest, just competitive)

When Apple updates the Pros the iPad will have an option for everybody and none of those will be limiting.

well and why not if IOS devices is what is moving, from a financial sense why should they pour resources into product that are'nt selling as well

Maybe they're trying to recapture the losses in the education market by shoehorning this into the Chromebook market?

Dunno what the **** Cook is thinking. But there's a method to his madness, usually.

Fixed that for you. It's not been nearly as bad when you use the actual product names.
