They will probably drive industry prices down. Nobody will pay $4,000 for a 30" monitor where I can get a 47" LED backlit HDTV for 1/2 of that.

Most people who consider an HDTV an acceptable alternative to a 30" or other larger computer display probably weren't realistically in the market for an ACD anyway.

too bad for me...my current monitor is on it's last legs and I need to buy in the next few weeks...I was waiting till the end of august because my local apple dealer said they'd introduce new monitors then...I guess he's wrong...so, no apple monitor for me...

the apple dealer told me the 23" wasn't great with gradations...I keep reading mixed reviews about them...some say they love them for their photography work, keeps working great even though the technology is old, and others complain about blue corners and green corners, and just not happy with overall image quality...

so, maybe the NEC 2190uxi for my graphic design work and photography, i hear that's an excellent monitor...wish they sold the 2490 in france but it just isn't available in europe...

hard to believe apple has put their monitors on the back burner this long...anyway, at least there's some talk of new stuff comin' down the pike...

No way. Anyone who is used to a 30" isn't going to drop to a smaller display. (speaking from experience, and my option)

+1

I used to have 19 and I thought it's big, than I upgrade to 24 and was very happy. Until I get new screen on my work which is 30, now I can't feet anything on my 24 ...

BTW if somebody think 30 is too big I'll gladly exchange my 24 to your 30 + $$$ (Hit me up if you interested)

Blu-Ray is an optical disc and has absolutely nothing to do with Cinema Displays.

If you wanna be nit-picky about it, the new Cinema Displays would have to support HDCP to play a Blu-Ray, but first we need Mac support for HDCP.

they are complementary issues, using HDCP compliant standard, HDMI or another display wire, would be great.

so would Apple finally using some BD-Rom drives, there are terrific ones that are also dvd burners, apple needs to stope screwing over consumers who need and want blu-ray

at this point, Apple is showing it isn't a tech leader, but instead drags its heels on new innovations and standards. only to protect the itunes movie store.

Anyone hoping for a significant price drop will be sorely disappointed.

Oh and built in iSight is crap. Make an external USB or FW iSight HD.

New features like iSight and HDMI may be considered a must haves by some, but I'd rather they focus on improving the quality of the picture that's delivered.

•Better viewing angles. Blacks on my 30" ACD still show an awful lot of light bleeding through. Makes precise colour judgement nigh on impossible.
Black *has* to be pure black. Not a shade of dark red/blue in the corners.
•Wider colour gamut please.
•Less heat production (the 30 inchers are like space heaters)
•Support for hardware colour calibration.
•Higher res would always be nice... though resolution independence will become increasingly more important. It's still not in OSX.

Apple's not going to drop the price. Apple would have to put a cheaper panel in if they wanted to bring it lower. Of course if they did this, their target audience for the display (pros who need high color accuracy) wouldn't exactly be happy.

HDMI would be nice, that way you could plug in a PS3 or something. Without BluRay however, I would think the chances aren't great. DisplayPort is kind of catching on with display vendors, but graphics card companies aren't using it yet, so I don't think they'll bother with that unless it REALLY moves between now and January.

I wonder how Steve'll introduce them since he's not allowed to mention the mac pro? If the ACD's get a macworld spot (No reason they wouldn't), the Mac Pro would have to be integrated as well. If it's redesigned, they'll have a good reason to show it off.

Great "news" even though it's just a rumor. I imagine they'd easily cut the response time in half, not that it matters. Another reason to wait for nehalem!

They will raise it if anything. At best they might sell it at cost for a couple of months, just to flatten the price of LED displays right down.

What people don't seem to understand is the display is not meant for them. Its an extremely well priced display for what it is, and is well in reach of its intended market.

As far as I can see, other than perhaps HDCP, there is no reason for them to change anything about the display for another couple of years.

It's not like you have to buy the display. There are many far cheaper and far shoddier displays out there.

Thank you. Not sure how the Blu-Ray comment even started.....

I got my 24" LG L246WP, which is a P-MVA panel, for $350. Compare that to the 23" S-IPS 'Cinema' display for $900.

Definitely NOT worth the ridiculous price for the apple LCDs.

Why bother updating these?

Apple hasn't been competitive in monitors for years, only suckers buy apple monitors. Does anyone think they'll actually ship a monitor that is either top-quality, or a decent deal compared with other options?

They might as well just get out of the monitor business, they can't compete and I doubt they sell enough to make it worth the trouble. Their monitors wouldn't be missed, does anyone really wish they still made things like printers?

Most people who consider an HDTV an acceptable alternative to a 30" or other larger computer display probably weren't realistically in the market for an ACD anyway.

I think they may not fully understand how and why the pricing is and how the quality is far better than most.

What's the resolution of the HDTV? The 30" ACD will most likely have a resolution of at least 2560*1600 (double 1080 HD).

OMG, please don't tell me Apple is going to continue stonewalling Blu-Ray integration until 2009?
That's the earliest Blu-ray will appear, assuming the new ACDs do have HDMI. If not... then I'm not sure if Apple will ever support Blu-ray.

Jobs will reveal the touch-enabled iScreen, a wall-mountable HD display (the "digital whiteboard") with a built-in digital tuner that's comparable to and possibly better than HDTVs on the market in its display classes, and it will come bundled with AppleTV. Native iTunes downloads, iPhone and iPod touch as remote controls. In fact, maybe he'll even offer a "full package" where people can buy an iScreen, AppleTV, and an iPod Touch all in one bundle.

Just in time for the transition to digital TV in February.

I utterly hate posts like this. Just as I am sure someone will hate posts like mine.

I think the best improvement would be an iSight camera for sure, do any other monitors come with a built-in web cam? I know the macbook was one of the first laptops to have a web cam and now all the new laptops have it. Besides the iSight, HDMI would be awesome for the 30" model, who knows maybe Apple will surprise us and enter the TV business and start selling 42" LCDs with built in Apple TV... it could happen.

Well this rumor brings about mixed feelings... While I'm glad Apple is finally updating the cinema displays and probably Mac Pros as well, it means that I'll have to stick with this creaky old 15" 1Ghz iMac G4 for a little while longer if I don't want to be stuck with an ancient monitor and newly outdated Mac Pro -_-

And before the ignorant types chime in - no, I don't want a "better" $200 cheapo TN panel LCD. Some amount of color accuracy is necessary for me, thus the need for a cinema display.

Touch screens on the displays! I've been saying it all year. Apple will integrate Cocoa Touch into its mainstream OS. No, you won't throw away your keyboard. But you will be able to touch your screen, and probably lie it flat or near-flat on a desk.

Umm, given the size of the apple displays I have seen at the apple store - there is no way I would have room to lay that flat or near flat on my desk and still have a desk. :eek:But given the fact I have 2 Dell Monitors hooked to my dell desktop for work - give me 32 inches. Which is nice (on the other hand, I just heard that out dept is approved for 3 monitors and I know someone who bought there own personal monitor and hooked up a third). I thought 3 monitors would be overkill, but given what we do and we are on windows with no nice Expose button - I can see why.

I finally got my wife used to using Expose on her mini - she loves it. :D

However, the thought of a new display would be nice. Right now my wife's mini is hooked to a 3 year old KDS 15" LCD. ok for what she does. me on the other hand.

Also on this post, I heard someone mention Samsung. BEWARE that is what is used in Dell laptops and so far just about everyone I have seen...

1. inverter board failed after a year.

2. Flourescent backlight failed between 1 and 1 1/2 years

3. my 2 1/2 year old Dell XPS m1210 developed an internal crack in the display (have no idea how that happened. It was fine, I walked away for 5 min came back and say black messed up pixels. Rebooted it was still there, then noticed a crack that went from the top all the down and over to the side. Well, there goes my last Windows personal machine... If I can only get me work to use Apple, then there would be no PC's left in my home. ;)
