Touch screens on the displays! I've been saying it all year. Apple will integrate Cocoa Touch into its mainstream OS. No, you won't throw away your keyboard. But you will be able to touch your screen, and probably lie it flat or near-flat on a desk.

Great, this again.....~~~ sheesh. iduno about you about I wouldn't want to even *look* at (much less work on) a display thats covered in fingerprints, dirt, oils and other crap...

How much times must I repeat this here; touch; good for small screens like iPhone; for big screens it doesn't work unless you're a designer and working with a STYLUS, NOT fingers. I say everyone here who is screaming 'yay touchscreens!' have never in hell used a touchscreen bigger then that of the iPhone and have been watching too much Minority Report

Maybe finally Apple will get resolution independence to work, maybe with Snow Leopard. Then they will be able to offer 300 DPI LCD monitors. Apple has been talking about "resolution independence" but it makes no sense until they have the hi-res hardware out.

Just a shame that still there isn't a single 'resolution independent' app out there which would work properly :p

I expect LED displays at significantly higher prices than what is offered now.

Think of the monitors as BMW's vs. Hyundai.

My $20k Hyundai new is now worth $1k, I learned my lesson and bought:
My used $28k BMW is still worth nearly $28k!

My $369 Sceptre 20 inch widecreen is worth about $80 today, I learned my lesson and bought:
My $899/new 23 inch ACD I got used for $575 still still worth $575 today!

Is that being a sucker?
Good analogy hahaha...

We need:

20" LED
24" LED
30" Actual technology.

All with Built in iSights, HDMI, HDCP and with important price drops because even with these new features they would STILL be grossly overpriced at the current cost.

I agree.

But mainly, the iSight and HDMI are my biggest wants and needs for the new display.

Remember when the 22" Apple Cinema Display came out 8 years ago? $3999. Apple was the only one licensing "22" LCD technology" at the time.

Could it be possible that that apple release the new cinema screen/apple tv/mac mini as a combined unit? At a price which would "remove the umbrella" for the competition that was refereed to in the conference call?

That that would be exciting!!

Why bother updating these?

Apple hasn't been competitive in monitors for years, only suckers buy apple monitors. Does anyone think they'll actually ship a monitor that is either top-quality, or a decent deal compared with other options?

They might as well just get out of the monitor business, they can't compete and I doubt they sell enough to make it worth the trouble. Their monitors wouldn't be missed, does anyone really wish they still made things like printers?

You are wrong on so many levels.

Must be HDCP compatible

Joke about Blu-ray all you want. Imagine spending a fortune for a 30" display, having it for many years, and you can't even watch a Blu-ray movie on it. That's just stupid. What if you couldn't watch a DVD movie on your current display, acceptable? When the trend is going to convergence, this is a given they musty have HDMI and DisplayPort. Apple sells/rents HDCP content, don't you think their hardware should display it? Don't even get started that computer monitors are not "meant" to be TV's, the trend is towards convergence, not to mention people want value. How much does it cost to add HDMI, 5 bucks? Not only is this about Blu-ray (BD) source, in 2009 ALL TV broadcasts will be HD and wide screen. Some of you are dinosaurs! Here is the specs for the Dell:
* High-Definition 30" Panel – Offers ultra-high resolution and superb color for content-creators, designers, video, gaming and entertainment.
* 2560 x 1600 Native Resolution – Offers up to 77% more content compared to Dell 24-inch monitors.
* 3000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio – Produces darker blacks for sharper images, crisp text, better color saturation and greater detail for HD entertainment.
* TrueHD 1080 - Supports higher definition than HD Television and comes with an integrated HDMI connection.
* Dell TrueColor Technology – 117%1 of NTSC color gamut for rich, life-like imagery that has accurate color representation better tones and hues, and can support up to Adobe 98 color standard.
* Extensive Connectivity – Seven connection options: VGA, DVI-D with HDCP, HDMI, S-Video, Component, Composite and DisplayPort give you a wide range of connection options.
* State-of-the-Art Design – With its brushed aluminum housing, glass stand base, and Dell-patented cantilever arm, the Dell 3008WFP looks as beautiful from the back and side as from the front.

I have to agree with others who say Apple has long ago lost any competitive edge in the Display business. My own experience with Apple Displays has been dismal at best.

Does anyone remember the outrage that followed the release of the $2,400 23" ACDs in the Apple forums? There were dozens of threads, some with thousands of posts, of 23" ACD owners with all kinds of problems, like very uneven backlighting, yellowing around the edges, fading colors, stuck pixels, light bleeding, etc. At the time Apple marketed these ACDs to Pros who needed color accuracy. They touted the ACDs as the first "color accurate" LCDs on the market. Well, it just wasn't true.

Unfortunately, Apple chose to ignore all of us and still sells that defective monitor today. Only difference is that they stopped marketing it to pros as a color-accurate monitor. So, probably most people who buy it won't really notice or care about those defects.

I love Apple products, but, they don't do displays very well. I previously owned three 23" ACDs and had to return them all due to defects. Instead, I bought Dell monitors for nearly half the price and none of the problems.

It better cost less than the Dell panel or I'm not even going to consider this!

You're not likely their target market then. Apple wants to sell their displays to people who actually buy on quality and not just price.

To everyone looking for a camera on the ACD's, it's not going to happen. Too many of these monitors are used in situations where the camera is not only unnecessary, but probably not allowed anyways. Lots of places with trade secrets or government projects going on that can't be allowed to see the light of day outside the facilities where they're being worked on.

Best you can hope for is a new standalone iSight. Maybe they'll have a removable plate up top you can swap in an iSight with, like the mockups going around a few months ago. They won't build them in though. It's be suicide for their monitor business.

Good things about Apple displays:

1) Single Cable for Video, Firewire, Audio
2) Decent design
3) Good panels

Good things about other displays:

1) Multiple inputs - standard DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort growing now. VGA even but I don't see Apple supporting that. Some even have component and svideo, again Apple would never support that. Next Apple display should have the single cable for DVI input + USB and Firewire, and two HDMI inputs.

2) Lower prices - significantly lower prices. Apple need to drop their prices, although not so much they have to use a lower quality display.

3) Some have decent design as well. This isn't an Apple-only feature.

4) Lower prices, sometimes 1/3rd of the price of the Apple display.

I pretty much agree entirely having enjoyed my current 20" Cinema display for the last 4 years nearly. I'd like to see the extra inputs so a KVM switch isn't necessary to connect an extra source. I'd also rather Apple introduced a new matching external iSight camera rather than integrate one as it is more flexible and those who have a camera already don't have to pay for one.

why is having HDMI a benefit? I'm obviously missing something so maybe someone can enlighten me? I can defo see the need for hdcp compliance but this can be achieved over DVI (such as it is in my dell 2407).

I thought HDMI = DVI + Audio. So unless they integrate some speakers in there then why the need for hdmi? What's wrong with an HDMI-DVI cable?

While LED displays as large as 30" are commercially available, they still appear to be cost prohibitive with Samsung's 30" LED display priced at $4735. We're uncertain how this price discrepancy with Apple's current displays will be reconciled.

The 30" will be very expensive, that's how.

Apple has never sold its large displays at a low price point. Instead, they will likely build the 30" (or similar) panel with top end features and charge a top end price.

Dell panels are generally not in the same quality control and color stability league as Apple LCD's. Notice I said "generally" so don't flame me about the new Dell panels being "better" than Apple's, because obviously some are. But generally Dell sells to a lower target in terms of professional features and price points than Apple.

They will probably drive industry prices down. Nobody will pay $4,000 for a 30" monitor where I can get a 47" LED backlit HDTV for 1/2 of that.

You might be surprised.

Small will probably become the new "big." I, for one, don't want a 47" LED and the power it takes to drive it. I would rather a nice 30 to 36" LED with high def and great power management.

I'd say it's the opposite. Most Dell displays are better than Apple's. I'm not talking about the design and casing, I'm talking about the LCD panel and features. I've looked at both side-by-side, and the Dell was always sharper, brighter and had no color fading or uneven backlighting like the Apple displays have. I bought 3 Dells to replace 3 returned 23" ACDs. I've seen the evidence first-hand. The only "problem" with the Dell displays is that they are a little too bright at night.
