I'm still laughing because of the Verizon commercial, "your wife will LOVE the dual core tegra chipset." lol :p

You think it's funny, do you? My wife left me because I didn't bring home the dual core tegra.

Most ridiculous BS I've ever seen. I have never even met a woman who knows the difference between a dual core and a single core proc. I've definitely never known anyone who works in a Verizon store who knows...

It's far better than "Your wife will love the dual core Tegra 2 chipset..."

Wow, that Verizon commercial is pretty terrible. Unless that ad was on G4 or Spike TV or something, that represents the flawed thinking of so many tech companies. Throw out a bunch or jargon and hope something sticks!

"Android 3.0, Tegra 2 Dual Core Chipset, 4G-LTE upgradable" might as well be gibberish to 90 percent of people...:roll eyes:

Sure, the iPad commercials can be a little schmaltzy, but I'd take that over the usual spec-slinging Call of Duty-esque stuff any day.

(Disclaimer: I am a proud Apple "fanboy")

I enjoy these much better than the snarky, juvenile "well... you don't have an iPhone" commercials. This is what I expect from Apple - simple, elegant, and with an enlightening emotional impact. Well done!

I think it's for the people (and there are lots of them, actually) who wonder what one can do with an iPad. And the commercial is saying that you can do everything you can do now but you can do it better/easier and all in one place, if you want. A lot of people I talk to say they'd get an iPad but they don't know what they'd use it for.

You can do it all on an iPad, but a lot slower than on a computer. Especially web browsing.

I don't know if this was intentional or just a coincidence on Apple's part, but the Developer has had the same Lion screenshot on their iTunes App page for a while.

That's my brother's app! Congrats to him for getting it featured in a commercial. It's been a long time coming.

You're gonna love the way your computer looks, I guarantee it.

Haha...sounds like him, but it's actually this guy:

I don't want to be the nay sayer or anything but what I have read from this post is that to reach the public you have to dumb down your ads. Maybe it is just because I am a more tech savvy person then most but I remember even when I was younger I always wanted to know about the specs. Like when I heard about pentium processors I went and read all about them. When I went to buy something I knew about the product. I guess Apple just knows it doesn't matter at this point as long as it has their logo on it a lot of people will buy it. I means this ad is pretty silly. You can do everything they showed on any tablet not to mention they were selling a ton without any ads. Really why do they even waste their time. I can understand the iPhone ads because there is a bigger market in the since of decision for the consumer. They could get a phone for free or at least a lot cheaper then the iPhone so they have to make ads to show why you should buy an iPhone. With the tablets though people don't even know they are called tablets they just ask for the iPad or what does that do compared to the iPad. Almost like how iPod was the name for all mp3 players. I honestly think at this point Apple could put their logo on a toilet and people would buy it. I am not trying to hate on Apple I mean they got it right as you can tell. :D

True... but a tablet was never supposed to replace a computer. You're still gonna own a real computer for any heavy-lifting you'll need to do.

But grabbing an iPad to browse a few web pages is still easier than plopping a 5lb laptop in your lap.

My personal preference for web-browsing devices in order would be: desktop>laptop>tablet>smartphone.

But most people could do 90% of their stuff on something the size on a tablet.

I agree with your descending order of preference. I find that certain sites on the iPad are a real chore to navigate, like newegg.com, msnbc.com, anandtech, etc. Especially on 3g. Some things are painfully slow, to the point of why even bother. I'd rather wait to get to a desktop of notebook. Compare the speed of the new MBA to the iPad and there is a big difference on more complex sites.

I know I'm an odd duck for this, but I like the aggressive, driving feel of the Power Mac G4 Cube ad:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuJvwvome1o

And we all know how that went.

For what it's worth, I thought the cube (and the ad) was cool too when it came out. However, it was overpriced (even for a Mac), and the cool form factor alone just wasn't enough to attract most buyers, myself included.

The iPad, on the other hand, really does deliver what it claims to — a new, fun and intuitive way for everyday people to do a whole lot of great stuff they previously did using a multitude of other objects and devices, and to do it better in many cases. Yeah, the ads are saccharine. Certainly here in Australia, I feel they would do better to tone that down a bit — but in principle, the ads are great because they get to the heart of how people benefit by incorporating an iPad into their lifestyle.

You seem to be comparing 3g to wifi, not iPads to notebooks.

yes Apple does it differently, but I think you don't get the point.

You are a tech fan, you are interested in technology itself. Great for you. I am too.

However, for the vast majority of people what really matter is not what technological feat is behind the devices we use, but what the device can do for us in our lives, what we can do with it.

The problem with a lot of "techies" is that they consider that if you don't advertise the CPU or the technology directly, you are reaching for "dumb peoples", but that's just wrong. They are reaching for peoples who just are not interested in the technological aspect of computers, because they prefer to spend their time caring about other things, which may include very serious and complicated stuff.

For example, my university teacher use an iPad, but he really don't know or care about which CPU is inside the machine. All he care about is how the iPad is actually helping him doing all the things he have to do and think about daily. The guy as a Ph.D., he is a postdoctorate, he publish a lot, he is well known. He really isn't a person you can consider to be "dumb". But in the field of computers he really just don't care and don't want to spend is time caring about it.

A "technical ad" won't speak to a person like this. But it doesn't mean that Apple is reaching for a dumber market.

"Techies" have to understand that there are peoples that legitimately have other interests.

30 million iPads sold... I guess these "dumb downed" ads work, huh. ;)

Like when I heard about pentium processors I went and read all about them. When I went to buy something I knew about the product. Other tablets' ads brag about their specs... how is that working out for them? Specs are for nerds... but these are consumer electronics.

Almost like how iPod was the name for all mp3 players.

Funny you mentioned the iPod. The iPod wasn't the first MP3 player... nor was it the first to use a hard drive. But the original iPod was one of the first to use a 1.8" hard drive to make it smaller. Other hard drive MP3 players back then were still using 2.5" hard drives and they couldn't fit in your pocket. Apple got that right out of the gate.

Then the Nano came out and was even smaller and more portable... and it became the best selling iPod of its time.

Plus... Apple had the biggest secret weapon of all... the iTunes Music Store. No one else was bundling a music store with their MP3 players. That was a genius move... and iTunes became the largest music store in the world.

So... people weren't brainwashed into buying iPods because of the flashy colors in the TV commercials... they bought them because they were a "total package" that you couldn't get anywhere else.

Seriously... was there ever a Creative Zen music store?

I honestly think at this point Apple could put their logo on a toilet and people would buy it. I am not trying to hate on Apple I mean they got it right as you can tell. :D

Android devices are being activated at the rate of 550,000 a day. That must mean it's pretty good.

I'm wondering if a Google toilet seat would sell just as well :D

Coke gets it.

McDonalds gets it.

Apple gets it.

When you advertise, reach for the heart and the emotional center of your viewers. That's why Apple continues to make award-winning ads that reach (most of) us. And it's why competitors continue to miss the boat by pushing specs.

People want to know 'what can I do with this device?' Not what hardware does it have. Apple gets it.

Yes! That's Advertising 101 and yet most competitors gloss over that. Sell the benefits to the consumer NOT the features.

And how much better would those websites be on another tablet?

3G speed aside... some websites just aren't built for a finger.

Like I said... tablets aren't meant to be your sole computing device... but they can get get the job done 90% of the time.
