It's pretty safe to guess that Apple will update before summer. I'm sure Apple wouldn't want to miss out on Lion sales if every student ends up getting a MBP already loaded with Lion. Even offering a cheaper Lion upgrade for recent MBP buyers over summer would work out better for them.

This makes a lot of sense.

And a whole lot of money.

Luckily for us and Apple, the MBP only uses 2 SATA ports, one for the HDD/SSD and one for the optical drive. Apple could theoretically ship these faulty chipsets in the MBP without any negative impact on them or the consumer.

Cougar Point has 6 SATA connections, 2 SATA III and 4 SATA II. The chipset problem only affects the 4 SATA II ports. This means that if Apple uses only 2 SATA ports anyway, the faulty design makes absolutely no difference to Apple. Of course, there's always the chance that Apple and Intel will be perfectionists about this, and simply refuse to ship faulty chipsets even though they will never affect users.

I like to agree with you, but I am guessing apple would have used sata port 2 instead of port 1 for ODD as that is how Intel's demo board is done. Plus, another fact is that port 0 - 1 are for HDDs and 2 - 5 are for ODDs. Switching from port 2 to 1 would require a major layout overhaul, which I don't think it is a smart thing to do at this point... If I was apple, I'll just wait for Intel to correct their chipsets...

here is a thought, what if the sandy bridge chipset debacle spurs Apple to get off the Intel chipset bandwagon? Too bad nVidia is "out of that game". I dont see AMD putting out a sandy bridge chipset, and I doubt Apple would go to AMD for CPUs, as much as I used to be a big booster of AMD, I think they have fallen off.
Soooo. Could Apple spin up a chipset? They do have some chip tech in house.

SATA ports do not have any specific assignments, ports 0 and 1 are not just for HDDs and the rest for ODDs. You can plug whatever device you want into whatever SATA port you please, even the SATA3 ports. They're backwards compatible. Intel's demo board is also irrelevant, especially with non-standardized laptop boards. Apple can do whatever they please.

The best part about waiting is that I have more time to save up so I can afford the 17" MBP I've been dreaming about.

Seriously, I don't care much about the problem with the Series 6 chipsets, I'm more interested in seeing better battery, no odd, standard sdd and liquid metal on the new refresh of MBPs.

Well, what I am trying to say is laptop manufacturer's often follow the demo board provided by their supplier to minimize any unknown issues unforeseen by it's creator. You know, the more the merrier (in this case, it is better when backup by it's original designer). Hence, you are right that it doesn't have to be port 2, but I am assuming that apple went with the demo board and at this point it is just too late for any layout changes.

This forum is great one minute I'm reading that it's likely atleast June before an updated MacBook is revieled then a minute later I'm reading it could be this week or next. To buy now or not buy now that is the magic question that no one can answer

Once again, (and someone maybe need to make this as sticky rule)

If you need MBP now, just get it.

If you are in need but can get by, always wait for next refresh -- especially when it's within 6 month range.. hey why not!

Gotta love the people that complain about the original post by saying "we don't know until Apple announces it" and "why speculate" when they're posting on a site called MAC RUMORS.

That's the point. If you don't like to speculate, move along somewhere else.

"Don't tell me what I need to do."

Well, you obviously need me to do so, because you don't understand that the whole point of this site is about RUMORS.

Next thread. :)

No next thread.. let's stay on this!!
I love rumors about apple stuff.. If I didn't do this, my browsing activity would go down by 50 percent. Maybe bit higher.
Ok, I might be a geek but at least I lined up correctly.

Indeed. Isn't it nice to buy a product and then spend hours talking about it? :D

I can't see a refresh until Intel is beyond the sandy bridge mess up.

That's what is intriguing me the most... the blogs and so on that "rumorize" but don't really say anything about the whole Intel debacle.

I especially love the one where they are predicting 2/9.

I actually think they got the dwindling stock info from Macrumors. Except for the links in the very first post of this thread, haven't really seen much evidence of it.

if u still think we may get an update within the month of February at this point with all the problems with sandy bridge then you clearly has no good knowledge about electronics

There might be a direct correlation to sports and apple product.
Tons of talk before and after the event/purchase... ;-)

When did Apple ever state that they were moving towards Sandy Bridge? Any proof of this? From the rumors floating around today, it looks like Apple may be getting rid of the optical drive (hence the development of the App Store), and possibly bringing an end to selling software CD's in their retail locations all together.

I would not be surprised if they just put an i3 processor (and above) and make them with a SSD.

Ok guys apple should announce the new Macbooks before the end of March or i'm gonna buy one of those

i want the 13.3 Macbook pro but i dont want a Core 2 Duo , i hope apple will upgrade to i3 or i5

When does Apple ever announce what will be in a refresh before it happens? If you knew anything at all about Apple or the tech industry you would realize that Apple will have Sandy Bridge in the next MBP. At least the 15" and 17" will.
