New Evidence in iOS 12 of Apple's Upcoming iPad With Face ID

I regret buying the iPhone 10. FaceID alone is a backwards step from a fingerprint scanner. The fingerprint scanner just works more often and in more scenarios than FaceID, period. For non-iPhone 10 users, I can't explain just how annoying and frustrating face ID is to the point that it detracts from the user experience. I really hope they do an under the glass scanner like other manufacturers are doing, as well, but I wont hold my breath.
Apparently, you do not have sweaty hands.

But if it doesn't have a notch, it won't match the current iPhone X and upcoming iPhone X's.

Even if they have the room for sensors, I wouldn't be surprised if Jony adds a notch on the iPad just for visual consistency.

As long as there is no “notch” I’ll continue my tradition of buying iPads. As soon as that nasty notch creeps in, I’m out!

But you do get chips etc. My iPad is in a case and rarely leaves the house. You would have a point if I threw it around or was rough with it. I think it was widely acknowledged as a fragile point when it was launched with the iPhone 5!
Yes, it might be the weakest point but it really depends on the usage.
This is an extreme example but its just for illustration - if you leave the ipad on the table for 3 years you won't get chips. :-D

Anyway, I understand where you are coming from but it really comes down to the way one handles the device. Some people are very delicate (like me) and some people are less (like my partner for example).

I look after my stuff very well so when I sell them they always look as if they were brand new.

Regardless, I agree that some items shouldn't need to be babied but is an electronic device one of those items?

Of course Apple often choose form over function and in many cases they piss a lot of people off so I'm not against you here. Just saying that it can be chip free :)

I’m not saying thats what Apple will do, just that they’ve been known to stagger their releases. They released the first ipad pro in one size...the 12.9” in 2015. Then the 9.7” ipad pro in 2016, and the 10.5” ipad pro in 2017. And when they released the 10.5”, it had slimmer bezels, but the 2nd gen 12.9” released at the same time did not. So it’s totally possible that Apple only announces one size bezel-less ipad pro with face id this fall. I hope thats not the case either. I’d love to see an entirely new line of bezel-less ipad pros with face ID announced all at once. A 10.5”, a 12.9” AND a 7.9” ipad mini pro as well!
A 7.9” ipad mini pro would be perfect!

Because iPad is meant to work in any orientation, problems arise. Face ID sensors need to work with the pad held sideways or upside down. Note on iPhone that doesn't work yet. Also, with no home button, you swipe up from the bottom of the screen. On iPad, you need to be able to do that from any side. Note on iPhone that does work ok, on three sides.
That swiping up works on the iPad in iOS 12 from every side. Works fine actually.
Home button is almost useless now.

Stop with making the bezels thinner on an iPad, I have enough trouble with this one when I hold it accidentally hitting the screen.

The big question is... what will the price tag be?

I want one, I've been waiting for one... but man I'm afraid of the cost of them given the price of the X.

I wouldn't say that. iPad Pro has twice the RAM and uses the X version of the SoC, which comes in handy for anything high-end. If Apple does use an A12X in the new Pros, then that gap could get much wider. There's also the possibility that they could increase the RAM in the 12.9 version.

Fair enough; the Pro does have many technical advantages over the standard iPad. However, to the average user the feature differences on the surface aren't there. With Pencil support on the standard iPad, ProMotion and the Smart Connector are the only user feature differentiators. Either way, I'm hoping the addition of Face ID does not bump the price. That's all.

This.

Apple will want to keep their products consistent in terms of their design language. I'm betting that the next generation iPad Pro will have a notch just like the iPhone X.

And that's a damn shame. iPads have enough bezel and space to keep the Face-ID tech hidden and flush.

Face ID makes even more sense in the iPad (or the MB) than in the iPhone.

It will be great. Without the notch please, in a iPad it would be worse.

A 7.9” ipad mini pro would be perfect!

I know right?! The current mini has a 7.9” screen. If Apple loses the bezels, but keeps the same physical size by expanding the screen to 8.5” that would be so cool. The perfect portable travel size ipad. One can only dream.

Imagine the iPad mini stepping up to a 8.5" screen in the same form factor.

Add the A10 and that'd be pretty sweet... Unfortunately Apple hates the mini. :/

Larger screen size is a feature and it definitely has an impact relative to what you want to use your iPad it for. It really does provide greater functionality for certain uses. Also, if the Face ID inclusion does turn out to be correct, then that's another one vs. the standard model.

I wonder if Apple will break out their old patent where the camera is behind the screen for this iPad? Ive been fearing this patent and technology since 2006. This would mean there is no way to cover the camera, like we do now. Big brother will be watching, always....

Could care less. My 10.5 Pro is everything I could ask for in an iPad. Fast as hell, lightweight, fabulous screen, great camera, tons of memory, and a fingerprint reader, which I prefer over Face ID. I'll be keeping my 10.5 Pro for many years to come.

How much less could you care? Also, good for you. Don't buy one then. There are people out there who want such a product and will buy it.

but my iPad works just fine. I don't need a new iPad every year... heck its been 3yrs since I got a new iPad.

So don't buy one. It's really that simple. There are plenty of people who do want a new one.

So you if you could care less, it means that you do care and will probably *not* be keeping your 10.5 Pro for more than 6 months after the new version is released.
