Google cheated!

Look at the video of "AllRecipes.com" loading, at about 0:47 into the video. Examine the URL bar carefully.

It looks like it says:

file:///C:/Users/Kevin/Desktop/....

I guess they were only talking about the actual page rendering speed, not including the web traffic itself.

Ok, so I broke down and tried Chrome, and it hung with 50ish tabs open, never loaded any of them. So I'm sticking with Firefox for now, until Chrome manages not to hang when I open up all my tabs.

Based on Firefox's study on the number of tabs open, I realize most people don't have 50 tabs open at one time, but occassionally if I'm studying something, I'll have that many open, and a browser that crashes, isn't worth a hill of beans to me.

Am I missing something? I downloaded the software and I certainly wouldn't need a high speed camera to record a page load, I am assuming internet speed is more a factor of page loading than how fast the browser renders the page. Putting that aside though running Safari and Chrome on the same machine with the same internet connection. Chrome seems to be significantly slower. I guess it's a beta so it's not supposed to work perfectly yet, but it seem like they have some work to do before they go out touting how super fast it is.

Err, I means to say about : plugins. Top arrow is the Flash that the latest build of Chrome installs (should be disabled). Bottom arrow is Gala.

Thanks, that made a big improvement, I wasn't expecting it to lower anything besides flash but the task "Google Chrome" is now only 20% and "Google Chrome Renderer" is 8%, and Flash is down to 37% (same as in Safari). But the Safari task only uses 13% compared to the 28% of the 2 google Chrome tasks. And I still had a couple windows open in Safari while Chrome was just the video.
So I am going to stick with Safari as it should yield better battery life, though Chrome does seem to use less RAM...

How did you get Gala installed in Chrome? If you have a tip, I'd much appreciate it. :)

I've downloaded Gala, but it doesn't install in Chrome, just Safari and FireFox.

Chrome still has a ways to go with bookmark management at least; but with extensions available (especially Flashblock) I'm definitely giving it another look.

I tend to prefer Webkit to Gecko, but Firefox's extensions have always been so useful that I always end up back with Firefox - but Chrome might just convert me yet.

In terms of memory usage, this newest beta seems better behaved than both Firefox and Safari - that didn't used to be the case though.

Haha, pretty much sums up what others are saying about it being the internet speed that counts. Pretty much any browser can load instantly off your own hard drive.

May be a bit. It is, however, a lot more stable than safari. Apple's browser has way to many problems rendering websites.

Can you post half a dozen links to these websites that Safari has trouble rendering? There must be quite a few of them for you to consider it an issue. I can't recall ever having any problems loading any websites I visit, so I'd like to see what you're talking about.

I've downloaded Gala, but it doesn't install in Chrome, just Safari and FireFox.

Just install it like normal and disable the built in Flash in the new Chrome as shown in the post you quoted. Works fine for me.

I don't yet have Chrome for this exact concern.

I may download it tonight while at home to see what the terms and conditions are - I'm looking to reduce my Google exposure, not increase it.

It's bad enough that they collect my search info, but to know where I'm surfing all the time is just beyond the pale. Now, I don't know that they do this with Chrome, but I wouldn't put it past them either.

Yes,that's why I am Google free except search, and keep meaning to try Bing more to see how it is.
As Google likes to say, they are an advertising company, not search, cell phone, email, etc.
EVERYTHING they do is designed to sell ads for you to look at.To that end information about you is very valuable.
Companies don't design and build, and then give away an OS(Android)just for schnitz and giggles.
Too many acceptable alternatives to put up with that.
Me?Paranoid?Maybe.Maybe privacy today is an illusion. But it's my illusion and I like it.

How does this integrated flash plugin work on Linux? I think there is no support for 64-bit chrome yet so I can't try it

It takes a lot of genius to fire a potato gun and film it.

EDIT:

Sorry, did I say po-TAY-to? I meant Po-TAH-to.

doesn't work on a 2.7 ghz dual processor power pc...

so what then...buy a new computer just so i could have a faster browser? nah....not til macs come out with blu-rays on their systems

Chrome is awesome.

in similar news, IE has lost market share, but what's more interesting is how Chrome tripled it's market share in the past year, while Safari has remained relatively static. sorry Safari, but you're on the outs for this computer.

the mac version is still in beta

The graph should be 0 to 100 not 0 to 70. Not trying to nit pick but this is called distortion of the facts and best left to politicians. :)

What's wrong with advertising to, you know, get people to use your product? It's how pretty much every single other business on the planet creates sales. "Video advertisement" isn't really a new concept.

Agreed! I've been holding out on trying Chrome until I was curious enough to view the video and see just how fast it was (although I'm sure they were using a fast ISP). Nonetheless, Chrome is now on my Dock and whoa!...talk about fast! Too bad Safari isn't this fast. Sorry :apple:...Chrome Beta is smokin'!

I switched to Chrome from Safari several weeks ago and haven't looked back. Safari beach balls way too much. Can't remember a single instance of it happening in Chrome.

However I do a lot of Finds and Find Nexts. It's very unstable and crashes quite often if I do heavy repeated finds, and when this happens every tab I have open crashes.

Flash in Chrome is much better than Safari. Much smoother and less hiccups.

Uuuuuuuh... how do I upgrade? I think I'm still running the original Google Chrome.

Try Chrome > About Google Chrome > Update Now

Every morning I usually have 80-100 tabs open with Safari. Never had a single crash. I've seen Firefox crash sometimes because of the amount of tabs though.

I almost always have at least 50 tabs open and I have zero problems with chrome.

Not to mention chrome doesn't leak memory like firefox forcing you to ultimately close it down. I never find myself having to shut down chrome to free up memory. Firefox leaks with just one tab open.
