Not gonna comment on the functionality, I'd have to use one... but that is one cheesy looking operating system! Makes Windows look sophisticated.

I am not too excited about Honeycomb. Yes, the UI looks very good, but so what?

I need apps and I need to see some promising ones. CNN app is not going to make me buy one.

Also, they need to focus on wi-fi versions instead of stupid 3G/4G versions. I am not paying two data plans per months.

Overall, I will keep my eyes on it, but right now, it looks like first generation tablet and I am not interested.

How many of you screeching for widgets actually use them on your Mac?

The clean icon based UI of iOS does catch the eye. However, it is completely useless. One gains no information from a grid of static icons.

Oh sure, an uncluttered screen where I can instantly see all the apps available is completely useless.

When I use my device I want to run apps - getting a clean view of the apps I want to run is paramount to eye candy and complexity.

To you it may be eye candy, but to others its functional complexity with dynamic content that prevents them from ever having to open an app in the first place.

I don't care what anybody say, but I would love to be able to dual-boot honeycomb and iOS on an iPad.

See my post before, widgets on mac are totally useless (or close too it). Widgets on a mobile platform are absolutely required. They are completely different, to the point that you wouldn't even connect the two things as being the same.

Until you've used an android phone you can't really understand.

I believe, and I haven't mentioned this anywhere else yet, not that I can predict these things. BUT... to me it seems painfully obvious.

The last event we had "Back to the Mac" was clearly a play on words. Bringing iOS features back to the Mac. However, I think it was also a pretty big indicator of where iOS is going. Just think about it. Things that were in iOS are now going to the Mac. Meanwhile, it only makes sense to take things from the Mac and move those to iOS... the two will be mostly indistinguishable outside of interface eventually. think about it from a sales perspective. If you can use your iPad, why, you could also use a Mac in the same way. Eventually some sort of save your screen move it to the iPad sort of deal. Or throw your iPad screen on the Mac (think Motorola Atrix but "cloud" based)

So... predictions.

I think it's painfully obvious as well that we'll see a new Notification system being one of the "pillars" that were focused on in iOS 5. It was really one of the last remaining legacy things that really needed a refresh in iOS 4. Needless to say, this is going to be a sight for sore eyes. People will rejoice. It's been a long time coming.

I predict that not a huge amount will change with regard to the iPhone. But this will make a huge impact on the iPad. We will see "Mission Control" from Lion on the iPad.

Just look at the screen shots of it. The icons are huge, great for touching.

It will make the multi-tasking dock a thing of the past. It'll still be there but i suspect it will be there only for the notification system. double tap and you can bring up the "multi-tasking" bar which is now play/pause/skipping for music enabled apps, brightness control and turning certain things on or off (wifi, 3g, etc).

The multi-tasking dock will be moved to Mission Control. With previews of the apps that are running (like the last 4-5) and potentially certain Safari windows so you can jump right to the one you want. Imagine pinching to view individual safari tabs in this view. What I'd really like to see is some sort of card system in this just like you'd see with Palm. But that i suspect won't happen.

Otherwise, maybe a "dashboard" since it is now simple enough to access via Mission Control. There would be your widgets. Maybe those will get the ability to hang out on the main screen, but that seems to Android-like to happen. Dashboard is something they can say "well, we stole it first from Konfabulator, but we made it, not Android."

"Launchpad" is what we think of as the current home screens.

That'll be my prediction anyway.

As I said you can do this with Andriod. So there's no benefit to the way iOS does it compared to Android.

No one uses widgets on their macs because they're totally useless and inconvenient.

If all of you Apple users are comparing android widgets to mac OSX widgets, then you are WAY off. It is not even comparable between the two of them.

Widgets in OSX are an afterthought that no one uses and are not important, but widgets in android are what the OS is based around and absolutely crucial for an optimal experience. They make everything much more efficient and convenient.

If you love android so much, why are you on this board? I don't have a problem that you like Android. You can make your own decisions on where and how to spend your money. But it seems like you don't like Apple products. So join an Android board...

alot o this just tells me that apple needs to step up its cloud offeringgs. the main defense of the macbook air was the cloud. but the only way to truly uise it would be to use either goodle or microsoft solutions.

..................

The single feature I would like is a common dropbox for files and allowance for users and apps to access these common/shared files. It is absurd that data is held hostage by individual apps. If I have two apps that can read a PDF, I shouldn't need to specifically load it into one or the other. ...........................

This is the single most important limitation that makes me not want to upgrade to iPad 2. I'm not going to sink money in a device that doesn't allow me to copy a pdf from my work computer onto the device and read it. In order to do this you need to email of have wifi/Goodreader and even then you can't access the pdf from another App.

Specs wise I think Motorola has done a very good job, but to quote Tim Cook until it's released it's vaporware ;) Can I buy an iPad now? yes. Can I buy a Xoom now? Well no and no idea for when they'll be shipping considering Honeycomb is a little way off.

Until both iPad2, Android Honeycomb and Xoom are in the shops and available to buy IMO it's hard to make any fair comparison. Though with that said Android 3.0 did look very interesting and might be the reason I end up with an Android tablet instead of an iPad2.

However for now it's just theory on vapor and thoughts from a polished presentation.

I dropbox pdf over to iPad then open them in iBooks. Works great!

I have no desire to use them. So how are they "absolutely required". If I want to check twitter, I will use launch my awesome twitter app. If I want to check my email, I will launch my mail application. If I want to check the weather, I will launch my weather application. Why do I need a widget to do this? How is a widget absolutely required?

When will android users learn that we choose apple because of it's simplicity and perfection. When will they learn that we choose to temporarily live without features that others have because we appreciate flawless interaction. When will they learn that as much as we love things like widgets and open source content, it still doesn't compare to the simple things we love about Apple and it's iOS software.

In this world there are 2 types of people: those who are willing to wait(ios fan boys) and those who want it right now(android fan boys), regardless of how it performs.

It's pointless to argue over which systems best because as long as the world contains different types of people, there will be room for different systems.

widgets, widgets, lists, shopping lists, widgets, lists, shopping lists, peanut butter!

Widgets are dumb. I hope apple never copies that horrible idea of scrunching as much crap as possible onto the screen in tiny fonts and graphics. If they do that, they look like that second rate OS, Android.

Does Android have anything that even vaguely approaches Airplay?

The ability to wirelessly beam my iTunes collection (complete with album art and song data showing up on my HD television screen) from my iPad, is simply magical. Quite literally, the sort of functionality I've waited my entire computer-related life to enjoy.

All of those Fandroids can work themselves into a sweaty lather of excitement over helpful Widgets that keep them apprised of such vital information as the current barometric pressure or the latest Twitter mindfart.

I know which world I live in.

That's awesome news for these "others" because compared to iOS there is very little app development on the (unprofitable for all but Google) Android platform and most of the existing apps completely suck. :)

The android app store has over 140k apps. The quality of the apps is subjective, but you may want to start with some sort of stat to quantify your statement rather than repeating a common talking point in meaningless platform wars.

So here is my question: Android OS is, as I understand it, Java. I recall some years ago reading a caveat to the effect "Java is not fault tolerant, it is not suitable for mission critical applications." IOW, Android is for toys, right?

Typical Apple fanboy response.

- Multitasking are dumb
- Changing wallpapers are dumb
- Copy & Paste are dumb
- Third-Party apps are dumb

Honeycomb looks pretty cool, didn't really care for the current android tablets due to there ui, but honeycomb looks very interesting. Might be a possible purchase for me when they come out, don't think il be getting the iPad 2, il just keep the one I have, havnt been blown away by it it's not been as great as I imagined (for apps and games anyway) but as a browser and video player it's been fantastic.

I really hope iOS gets some ui revamp, it's getting abit old and boring now, widgets are very welcome. I hate them on osx or any desktop but on small computers such as tablets and mobiles they come in very useful and they just make things a little more interesting.

Just the option to be a little more customisable would be great... Putting things into folders and having a wallpaper isn't exactly magical in my eyes.

I think anyone who says that honeycomb looks crap is kidding themselves, grow up and don't be an Apple cult member, I love Apple and all their products, I prefer them over any other but I cannot deny when I see something from someone else that looks cool. Honeycomb looks cool!

I think google are catching up, but they arnt even close to having the app store which is the major posative Apple has over anyone at the moment.
