It gets a little bit weird here....
Just got an email from Apple stating I have an order change status......"Next day shipping"
Well, I already placed the order with next day shipping to begin with.
But, if I look at my order details online it still shows next day shipping but says Free next to it instead of the charge for shipping. Works for me as long as they actually get going and ship me something.

Hahaha... well thats odd....
Anyone who ordered a new iMac on release day - Tuesday October 13th - and NOT the basic models that were available in the stores (apparently any changes to the basic model had to be shipped) get their status updated from "Processing Items" to either "Preparing for Shipment" or "Shipped"?
I ordered the 21.5" iMac Retina and only upgraded the memory from 8GB to 16GB on 10/13 and it still says "Preparing Items".
I ordered on the 13th with expected delivery between the 17th and 21st. It is Oct 19 today and the status hasn't budged from "Processing". The Apple rep on text chat said that there was absolutely no delay and that I'd get it by the end of the day on Wed. Said it will be shipping from California. Let's see.
You can ask the people on Apple chat. I did and was told my iMac is being assembled in California.

I have a Tuesday order with a 27th delivery date. So don't worry I'll probably be your processing buddy for a long time.All my fellow processing people are slowly dwindling
Another "Ship to Store" guy here as well.
Still "processing items" no change yet to initial estimate of 10/28. Status quo for now.

Did you order on Tuesday? I really hope the reason I'm not good shipping time is because I chose not to have UPS or Fedex **** up my computer.
With that said I still check the orders page minutely and I'm still hopeful to receive my iMac sometime this week.
I ordered on 10/16. I had put that but accidentally overwrote it.
Finally....status change
Should put me to shipping on Tuesday and delivery on Wednesday Oct 21!
At least I got the next day shipping for free.....not sure why that happened but I'll take it.

I ordered on the 13th in the morning, as well, but I'm still in Processing Mode with same delivery dates of 19 to 21st. I'm in SF Bay Area, and not too far from Fremont, so would have thought it would at least be Preparing by now. I assumed it was via Fedex, but I could be wrong. Either way, it's standard shipping.
