It's a massive overgeneralisation, but you could split iPad owners into three groups:

Those who need the newest items and upgrade every year.

Those who like to keep fairly up to date, but don't necessarily buy every year, maybe every other year.

Those who will keep their iPad as long as they can before spending the money on a new one.

I suspect that the second group is quite a significant proportion. I am one myself, as I upgrade my stuff every other year. These people didn't buy an iPad2, but they are buying now.

I'm in UK and my 64Gb iPad has shipped. Ordered 3am on release day.

I'm in the UK and my Black 64Gb 4G iPad has also shipped. Ordered 5am on release day.

I'm seeing lot of people that ordered at the early hours of the morning compared to me but I'm facing no delay. Why is that?

No 128GB iPad, no sale (I'm taking the wait and see approach for retina). The other day I freed up 3GB on my 32GB to bring it up to 4GB free so I could install some app updates. After installing them all, including a lot of retina crap from Apple, I had 2GB free. Even without upgrading to retina I'm going to need a bigger iPad as I lost 2GB. How do I know if 64GB will cut it? I don't even have movies or music on my iPad now and it's almost full. Games like Real Racing 2, Infinity Blade II, Rage HD, Gangstar Rio, NOVA 2 and more are all over 1GB each. Then you have apps like GarageBand and Navigon which are huge. Can you imagine the retina versions? I saw a tweet from Paul Haddad of Tapbots who said…
"Tweetbot for iPad @1x == 8.8MB Tweetbot for iPad @2x == 24.6MB #Upsized"
I love my apps! I fear these universal versions are going to be the end of that. I guess I should be less of an app hoarder, but I've gone through and cleared out a bunch of stuff several times.

As for the rest of my content...I have some photos. It would be nice to be on a trip and able to dump the RAW files from my 7D. So keep 64GB for apps and 60GB for photo dump. My last trip in January I shot maybe a little over 60GB between RAW and 1080p clips with my 7D, but I could have edited that content down a bit as I only skimmed two of the three cards for bad shots before unloading, and I undoubtedly have more shots to erase from those skimmed batches.

If Adobe came out with a version of Lightroom for the iPad [new] that could edit 18MP raw images then I would probably buy one right away. But for now I'm waiting to see how things shake out with these retina apps hogging all the free space. I really hope Apple will pull an iPhone 1 and bump the storage halfway through the product cycle. Here's to hoping!

Have you heard of iCloud? You don't need to store all your apps on the device, as it is simple to bring them down from the cloud when you need them!

A 128 gig version would be hugely expensive at this stage, and as more and more thing utilise cloud storage, you will need less.

mine will arrive on friday...also thinking of lining up at the ala moana store in honolulu and picking up another one. maybe more for the camaraderie...last year was fun w/ipad2...even though it was the day of the tsunami warnings...

Can't say i'm suprised.
I wonder if the rest of Europe will be able to pre-order though  .

Wow, sitting outside for a week to get an ipad.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people are

A) So wealthy they can skip a weeks worth of work in order to be in line so they can spend $600+

B) Have such meaningless lives that they've got nothing better to do than wait for the next shiny 'gadget'. The same gadget we'll all have (If we want one) within a month or two.
The same gadget, that will seem 'old' not very long from now. Creating yet another impulse for them to try to fulfill their lives with yet another gadget.
The difference is, we'll have spent this week actually living our lives.

I'm waiting for the new new iPad

I never like to get the first batch, i'll wait a few months until they fix any production issues that may have come up.

I have my ipad 2 for now and I still love it :)

I could see for like, the iPad 1 or the first iPhone, but you probably already own the previous device and the differences aren't going to blow your mind. Also the pre-orders this time makes going to the store and waiting in line for hours, let alone camping out, completely dumb.

Mine is 90 miles away sitting in a FedEx warehouse

Just looked at my FedEx tracking. It is 90 miles away from me in a FedEx Depot in Ontario California. The remarks say delivery is "on hold for Friday Delivery" Going to be a man about this and not whine, but...

Did not buy an iPad 1st Gen because know Apple well enough that the 2nd Gen is always the one they should have released in the first place. Then did not buy a 2nd Gen because I knew I would regret not having the Retina Display. So I think I am going to be Happy.

You have 14 days to return. Out of the millions produced, I'm sure at least one would be up to your exacting standards.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's rather unusual for Apple to comment on sales like this? Cook's initiative perhaps and it sure makes for a friendlier more open Apple, but the question is if this is really what they need. Maybe the closed off mystique was partially what had Apple going.

Mine shipped

Mine shipped and is in the next town away from me. Gonna try to extract it from FedEx early. Probably won't work though.

I wonder if apple are constraining supply deliberately to make it even more desirable?

Every time I hear someone claiming this kind of nonsense, it makes me wonder. Every company knows that if you miss an opportunity to sell, the opportunity might be gone. Everybody who has an iPad and wants to upgrade and can't buy will potentially stick with their iPad until the next model is released in a years time. Everybody who wants to buy their first iPad might decide to buy something else instead.

The added desirability (if there is any, some people just hate having to wait, so a "shipping in two weeks" notice make it highly undesirable for them), is far outweighed by the loss in actual sales.

I couldn't agree more.

You know what I've noticed, for the most part, since Tim Cook has taken lead of Apple, there are much larger leaks.

In my OPINION, if Apple doesn't step up their game on the leakages front, we'll see a decline in general Apple hype.

Like you said, they'll miss their mystique which we've all grown to loathe and love.

For me, the New iPad leak a week before the release really killed the buzz for me, I didn't even (and still haven't) watched the media event or even read the transcript. Simply because I felt I knew what the iPad would be, before actually seeing it.

Riddle me this; if the next-new Apple TV parts were leaked a day before the announcement, the leak showing a retina/OLED 55" screen, Siri,iCloud sync, etc.

Wouldn't you think "Now, I just couldn't care less.."

I know I would. I really enjoy the media events and product announcements in general.

That being said, this still hasn't stopped me from buying a new iPad. ;)

I cancelled my pre-order so one of you can have it. :)

I'm still excited, but really want to see ifixit tear down to confirm everything first. I can wait a few more weeks.

My iPad shipped from Nashville TN on Friday so apple definetely had them on hand in the US. So it's very possible they sold out of first US shipments and are awaiting the next flights to come
In.

I'm seeing lot of people that ordered at the early hours of the morning compared to me but I'm facing no delay. Why is that?

I think perhaps Apple actually made enough this year. They were still showing arrival dates of the 16th in the US even on the second day even though by then it had started to slip.

Sorry but filling up a 32g ipad and then complaining you don't have space is silly. You have iTunes and you can take off and put on info at will. You can only use so many apps in a day so put your most used apps on and have fun with your device. If you need more space get the 64g, if that's not enough learn how to prioritize your needs.

You only really needed your B option. Sorry but those to are lame and have no life. Yes I'm being judgemental, yes that sucks but come on, really?

No, no, no...

Samsung would be having sleepless nights:D

Samsung exec's will be smiling and slowly shaking their heads at the folly of people buying millions and millions and millions of iPads (but not because they want to, of course), whilst thanking their lucky stars that their tablet appeals only a discerning fraction of that number.
