That's why Apple takes all orders up front and then just delays the shipping notices.
No seriously, look at the Verizon iPhone where there was plenty of stock and look at all other launches. Fear of not getting one on day 1 or close to generates line-ups, which generates buzz which generates free publicity. As long as they can trickle them out, they lose no sales.
Apple is in a special place where it can afford to spread out the launch over the course of a few weeks and hold back some stock to generate buzz without losing sales.
I want one, but I haven't ordered it yet. I kind of knew this would happen! It's a good chance to save some clams up to get the 32gb.
My guess is 2 million over the weekend. Apple will likely wait until next Monday before they announce anything, however, so they can also include the initial retail store sales.
No 4G-LTE
This is crap! No 4G or LTE? Are they mad? Here in Europe we are a head of the US in mobile technology and not to have LTE that works here is ridiculous. This ipad isn't the big jump we were expecting, and although sales will be high they could have been higher if they had thought about there biggest market and not just their home market. Lets hope Samsung get their act together as this is now to silly to have one player dominating, also Apple seem to have all their eggs going into one basket these days?

im in FL too and mine shipped from nashville. looks like apple has instructed fedex not to deliver any of these until friday, but with so many, hopefully a few will slip through and get delivered early (as happened with fedex and the verizon version of the iPhone 4)
There's another thread all about this with several pages of discussion. Parts of Europe have LTE, but it isn't as widespread as it is in the US (certainly not the UK). Anyway, you do get DC-HSDPA and HSPA+ 21, which offer real-world speeds similar to Verizon's LTE network in the US.
It will be another year or so before LTE is widespread in Europe, and I'm sure by then Apple will be ready with an LTE version. They are using old LTE chipsets in the current version that drain more power than ones that Qualcomm is just now getting into production.
Hey MR, make sure you let me know when they announce the time that they will start selling them at retail stores!
Good catch. I think the ship times are only going to get worse from here. There are going to be crazy lines on 3/16
I belong to that second group too. I am just waiting on my tax refund to be transferred into my account and I'm off to the Apple store. And then to the Hofbrauhaus to celebrate
Win 8 looks like crap!
Dates slipped heavily here in Japan, too. Though Windows 8 looks interesting, there is nothing close to the iPad on the market right now.

I think this year is a special case for the 'every other year' buyer. I've got an iPad 1, and ordered a 3, but with 1GB of RAM I think this one will have a much longer lifetime with me. And I think there's still huge growth going on as people see first hand how convenient they are. I immediately got it, two years ago, but that's because I loathe laptops.
Dangit, mine's still "preparing for shipment". I want to see it on its way. Oh, the tension of the expectant first time iPad owner...
What is not real on any order from a reseller? So the original buyer is not keeping it, but somebody else. So? Its a sale, right?
Ordered last Wednesday right away. It shipped this weekend, and I got a FedEx tracking # from 
which notes "hold for future delivery". Looking forward to Friday, but hoping it sneaks thru a day or 2 early.

Phew! Just got a shock - an email from Apple about an unsuccessful order, and how my card had been charged, but not to worry as they were in the process of reversing the charge.
Turned out it was a different order number - one of the several botch jobs last Wednesday when the store was kicking people out midway through ordering due to the high demand.
Original order still OK for Friday!
