Wow, sitting outside for a week to get an ipad.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people are

A) So wealthy they can skip a weeks worth of work in order to be in line so they can spend $600+

B) Have such meaningless lives that they've got nothing better to do than wait for the next shiny 'gadget'. The same gadget we'll all have (If we want one) within a month or two.
The same gadget, that will seem 'old' not very long from now. Creating yet another impulse for them to try to fulfill their lives with yet another gadget.
The difference is, we'll have spent this week actually living our lives.

As a father of two young kids, I can only facepalm when I see this.

<rant>
I call them virgin nerds that live in mom's basement.

We have a few of them at work... Last year, after I spent most of my vacation time staying home with kids with flu in the winter, one of them told me that he didn't know what to do with his vacation... Gah!!!!

I guess I'm one of the few who will never order some new bauble sight unseen. I know that will probably translate into a longer wait time, but I just can't see dropping that kind of change without at least waiting to see if the reality meets expectation for the units.

My card has been charged but item is still processing
I went from standard to next day and it still says delivers march 16

Apple now slip 2-3 weeks for delivery.

Fortunately, the ones I have ordered are now listed as "Shipped," but I really question this timing by Apple. As of late last evening, all of the units were listed as "Ships by March 19th." Then suddenly, this morning, a 2-3 week wait on all units. I'm beginning to think that this is being done simply to drive traffic to stores, and create lines and the requisite publicity, on launch day.

Nothing wrong with that, I guess, but I think its more about marketing than a massive increase in demand in the last couple days.

Every time I hear someone claiming this kind of nonsense, it makes me wonder. Every company knows that if you miss an opportunity to sell, the opportunity might be gone. Everybody who has an iPad and wants to upgrade and can't buy will potentially stick with their iPad until the next model is released in a years time. Everybody who wants to buy their first iPad might decide to buy something else instead.

The added desirability (if there is any, some people just hate having to wait, so a "shipping in two weeks" notice make it highly undesirable for them), is far outweighed by the loss in actual sales.

Not to mention - last quarter Apple was selling iPads at a rate of well over 1 million per week; and the new iPad looks like exceeding that. How much higher can supply go?

This is crap! No 4G or LTE? Are they mad? Here in Europe we are a head of the US in mobile technology and not to have LTE that works here is ridiculous. This ipad isn't the big jump we were expecting, and although sales will be high they could have been higher if they had thought about there biggest market and not just their home market. Lets hope Samsung get their act together as this is now to silly to have one player dominating, also Apple seem to have all their eggs going into one basket these days?

Sorry, you are in the uk? There is no LTE there, so why do you want the chip? So it can search for non existing networks and empty your battery in record time? The new iPad WILL be 3times faster from the start with 3G tech the US can only dream of, soon (before summer) it will be 7 times faster.what are you doing with 40Gbs downloads? On a mobile device with at most 60GB storage?
And how is that worse then the proposed 20Mbs for mobile LTE sometime in end 2013 or beginning of 2014?

My iPad has shipped. Funny though, on the tracking Page it says my iPad is in PA right now (one state away from me).

Same. Mine is sitting in TN. I'm considering just driving over there and holding up the place. "Sir, calm down! You can take all the money in the register just don't shoot us!" "I don't want the money! Just give me my damn iPad! Here's my tracking number..."

If you click on a black 16GB Wi Fi. The box says ships in 2-3 weeks. But if you look at the summary on the top right it says Delivers on Mar 16. Same if you pick a 4G model it says ships in 2-3 weeks but if you look in the ATT or Verizon box it says delivers Mar 16. So I think their page is screwed up.

Samsung exec's will be smiling and slowly shaking their heads at the folly of people buying millions and millions and millions of iPads (but not because they want to, of course), whilst thanking their lucky stars that their tablet appeals only a discerning fraction of that number.

Samsungs tablets only appeal to the people that hate the iPad for the sake of hating the iPad. Or to the ignorant people out there that truly believe a tablet is a tablet regardless of who makes it. Only until they fire the thing up, and quickly realize they've been duped by Samsung!

I purchased both a Verizon and AT&T 64gb and only my AT&T version has been shipped out so far! Ordered on the 7th right when the store went live. Verizon better come on the 16th!

At this point in the game, Apples track record is pretty solid. You can keep waiting, while the rest of us enjoy our new iPads! :D

Uh, you appear to be in the UK (in a very nice part of it too, must get back to Bath someday soon) so in case you're not aware: we have no 4G or LTE network in the UK today. The necessary spectrum is, I believe, being made available as a result of the digital TV switchover and will then be sold off in some suitably cack-handed manner which will cripple the delivery of services in some way. The last bit is a guess but based on the 3G auction seems fairly valid...

The iPad supports the fastest mobile data networks we have here right now and realy can't do much more than that until our carriers get both spectrum and infrastructure.

Better watch it or the Apple cops will come and get you.

There's one heck of a large group of college graduates that couldn't find jobs this past year, and are still living with and off their parents. There's nothing better to do with their time than socialize with each other in front of an Apple store. Who knows, they might even get on TV for 2 seconds. Wow!

Best thing about all this is the availability of VERY cheap iPad2 units. We are getting 30 units this week for work, saving us several 1000s of Euros.

So my private new iPad comes as a bonus....free.

Delivery says Friday, 16th, had to get it in the UK as they forgot about Spain.....

Rhetorical question; how do they afford the iPad then? That's a whole lot of justification going on there.

Wait a second - are you trying to tell me that Apple released a statement to the press that said their newest iPad has "off the charts" demand. I'm shocked I tell you. I am shocked that Apple would release such a statement about one of their products. And to the media. SHOCKED!

Last time I preordered something from Apple, it sat in a FedEx building across the street from my office for 3 days. It said "not scheduled for delivery" on the tracking info. Almost drove me crazy thinking up plots to free my package.

Have you heard of iCloud? You don't need to store all your apps on the device, as it is simple to bring them down from the cloud when you need them!

A 128 gig version would be hugely expensive at this stage, and as more and more thing utilise cloud storage, you will need less].

No it wouldn't and you know it. Memory is dirt cheap.

Have you heard of data caps?
Have you heard about insanely expensive data plans?
Have you heard about intermitent access to the cloud?
Have you heard about the sheer insanity of downloading
your apps and data everytime you need to use them?

Have you heard of the simple solution of providing what every
other sensible device on the planet has that doesn't treat people
like stoopid sheeple?

Put a freaking SD slot and USB port for the ability to access
hundreds of GB of apps and data instantly.

Jaybus, totally unbelievble how the cultists have been brainwashed
into defendening expensive, half baked, gimpy hardware.

Well, its a job, right? You sit there for a week and on the day get 500quid for your spot. Not to bad a wage, better then at the golden arches.
Alternativly you do not sell your spot but buy your allocated 2 new iPads, put them on ebay and make your 500quid there.
