They usually give out that information several weeks after all the excitment is over. They might even wait until the next quarterly report to disclose it.

Right you are.

If we are guessing though, and why wouldn't we be:

So far every iPhone has sold more than all previous models combined. I think that will extend to the iPad. I bet they come close to last quarters 15.4 million, and that was a holiday quarter.

Same. Mine is sitting in TN. I'm considering just driving over there and holding up the place. "Sir, calm down! You can take all the money in the register just don't shoot us!" "I don't want the money! Just give me my damn iPad! Here's my tracking number..."

yeah mine is sitting in Nashville which is only 2 hours away from me.

So close, yet so far away

The naysayers were right. Apple fails again.

It's just "pent-up demand" or whatever.

No, really. Same thing happened with the iPhone 4S. There was an initial mad rush, and then consumers just stopped buy.......

Oh wait.

No 128GB iPad, no sale (I'm taking the wait and see approach for retina). The other day I freed up 3GB on my 32GB to bring it up to 4GB free so I could install some app updates. After installing them all, including a lot of retina crap from Apple, I had 2GB free. Even without upgrading to retina I'm going to need a bigger iPad as I lost 2GB. How do I know if 64GB will cut it? I don't even have movies or music on my iPad now and it's almost full. Games like Real Racing 2, Infinity Blade II, Rage HD, Gangstar Rio, NOVA 2 and more are all over 1GB each. Then you have apps like GarageBand and Navigon which are huge. Can you imagine the retina versions? I saw a tweet from Paul Haddad of Tapbots who said… I love my apps! I fear these universal versions are going to be the end of that. I guess I should be less of an app hoarder, but I've gone through and cleared out a bunch of stuff several times.

As for the rest of my content...I have some photos. It would be nice to be on a trip and able to dump the RAW files from my 7D. So keep 64GB for apps and 60GB for photo dump. My last trip in January I shot maybe a little over 60GB between RAW and 1080p clips with my 7D, but I could have edited that content down a bit as I only skimmed two of the three cards for bad shots before unloading, and I undoubtedly have more shots to erase from those skimmed batches.

If Adobe came out with a version of Lightroom for the iPad [new] that could edit 18MP raw images then I would probably buy one right away. But for now I'm waiting to see how things shake out with these retina apps hogging all the free space. I really hope Apple will pull an iPhone 1 and bump the storage halfway through the product cycle. Here's to hoping!

I don't understand why your comment is rated so poorly. Lightroom for iPad would be awesome

My first iPad is somewhere around Nashville and I expect it Friday after I get off work. When I get home, it will stay in it's box until after I get my daily workout completed. It's a matter of prioties.

As for the two guys in the UK already in line for Friday, that's a marketing manager's dream. I have given some thought to going to the Apple store that day just to see the excitement first hand but better sense prevails ... so far.

Meh, marketing speak.

Correct. I don't know how people eat this up and take it literally. What was Apple supposed to say? "The iPad 3 is selling OK". Even judging sales by shipping times is faulty as this factor is easily manipulated by Apple. Saying a product has sold out is one of the oldest in the book. Nothing makes customers want a product that everybody else has already bought.

I want one but I'm not doing the camping out nonsense. I mean, you have to have more of a life than that. Jeesh

Not at all surprising given the same thing happened with the iPad 2 last year. I know people who have left retail because of the iPad craze was too much for them.

Did anyone else catch this great article on Slate:

The other potential scenario, though, is far less optimistic for Apple’s competitors. It’s the iPod model. In this story, Apple begins by releasing a novel, category-defining product. Then, as rivals scramble for some way to respond, Apple relentlessly puts out slightly better versions every year, each time remaining just out of reach of the competition. Meanwhile it lowers its prices and expands its product lineup, making its devices more accessible to a wider audience. Then, to finish the game, it finds a way to boost its position through network effects and customer lock-in.

It seems to me that author has it right: Apple is going to continue slightly improving and tweaking the iPad's software and hardware while trying to always be just a 'bit ahead' of its competitors.

Or do you think Apple needs to or should attempt radical changes regularly? It is interesting times for Apple during its time of transition.

I guess I'm one of the few who will never order some new bauble sight unseen. I know that will probably translate into a longer wait time, but I just can't see dropping that kind of change without at least waiting to see if the reality meets expectation for the units.

Do the words "30 day return policy" mean anything to you?

I wonder if apple are constraining supply deliberately to make it even more desirable?

Yes, because turning away customers from buying a device they'd use to buy content through iTunes where Apple makes the most money is a great idea for increasing profits...:confused::confused:

I ordered mine on the 8th morning - initially it said delivery on the 16th but the next day I checked and it's slipped to the 2nd April :(:(:(:(

ouch.

Sorry.

I sat here and hit refresh for over an hour after the keynote to ensure I got one. I saw the next morning that you could still pre-order so I felt kinda dumb... but now I am glad that I sat here in anticipation/frustration trying to get it.

WTF, sold out!? All that's different is the screen. People really want this thing for a screen? Wow, this country really has officially gone to hell. I'm a mac guy but I would not waste my money on a new iPad when it's the same as my iPad 2 only it has a better screen. People are crazy. Sold out? If people will buy this, I bet I could piss on an iPad & sell it. People will buy anything. Awful.

Well, if its only the screen it would be worth it for me, if the difference is similar to iPhone 3GS vs iPhone 4, it should be quite, well, to quote Apple "amaizing"

But it is not only the screen. Its also vastly faster conection speeds (for me going from 3-7Mbs to stable 35-40Mbs) and a double size Battery. I am hoping that without the need for the power hog LTE the Battery life will improve over my iPad2 (and that is impressive)
Since they kept the prices, its only a small amount of money to pay after selling your old iPad2. I think, worth the money.

I guess I got lucky

That's wierd, cuz I ordered late Saturday afternoon (the day after the announcement), and was surprised to see they were still stocked for March 16th delivery. I thought maybe it had flopped.

In any case, I ordered an ATV3 on the same ticket, and I've already received the email stating the iPad has shipped.

Gotta say, this beats the pants off standing in line for three hours (been there, done that... three times).

Whilst expected, the news that sales are 'off the chart' is a shame.

I had the iPad but got rid of it after a few months as I simpy didn't find it a useful device and have always hoped Apple would continue to really push the tablet. But the iPad 2 and now the iPad are just bumps in spec rather than a true functionality improvements.

Apple's profits and sales are going up so I see why they aren't really bothering too much - it's time Apple saw some true competition.

Hmmm.... maybe people are buying the iPad 3 because they:
(a) don't have an iPad at all
(b) upgrading from a camera-less iPad 1
(c) want 4G speeds
(d) a second iPad for the household

but none of those are possibilities? People are just mesmerized by shiny things, right?
