So, basically, it is going to be a thinner, bigger version of the first generation iPhone.

Got it.

These fully rounded sides don't make sense to me. They look dated somehow. I think its much more likely that they either stick to the flat edges with chamfering of the 5S, or go for the iPad Air edges with a rounded back angle and chamfering on the front. The latter would make at least the 5.5" model much nicer to hold.

This wasn't all that hard to figure out, but I think what he's getting at is that it has the look of an Android phone. They tend to be rather bland looking, made of bad materials and are not striking in any way; like this.

For the last time... Android is an OS.. So how can a hardware mock up showing ios7 look like android...

Do you mean it looks like a s5 or an experia z?..

Well, it is interesting to see a design study with a reduced top section (vs. symmetrical top-to-bottom). I still contend Apple/JI won’t design something that loses its “balance" in landscape orientation, but kind of a fun “what if” rendering. :)
Ok but we saw an alleged iPhone 6 front panel that had symmetric top and bottom bezels and small side bezels. This render has neither. So I'm not sure what "recent info" this guy is basing his design on.

I've owned every iPhone that ever was, as well as a number of android handsets, big and small. None had a problem fitting in my pocket but still I HATED the galaxy nexus because of its screen size. My thumb couldn't reach all areas of the screen without requiring me to adjust my palm. The hardest area to reach? The top. Where navigational elements tend to be. Even the iPhone 5/s are a teeny bit too tall for my liking, but I was glad they didn't expand width wise. Apple's always been great at making experience decisions for people because they're experts in this field. For whatever reason people have decided that they NEED phones that encroach on the size of tablets. I don't get this, but if they're losing sales because they don't offer this, then I guess I somewhat understand them deciding to go after this. I hope they keep a 5s sized phone though because bigger isn't always better, and I'd prefer the better experience over a bigger phone.

Not that I would have a problem with that at all, but no, that's not what I'm saying. The size of a laptop isn't that much of an issue since almost everyone carries them in a bag already. Have you ever picked up a S4? Are you really telling me that you are struggling to get it in your pocked? I don't see a bunch of guys walking around with man bags because of their phones; nor have I seen any bundling of products, offering a free purse with the signing of a new cell contract. So clearly the phone isn't that damn big. This must be an online trolling issue, I've never heard anyone complain about the size of their 4.5-4.7" inch android based phones in person.

Hence why I hate concepts. It's pretty clear to see where Apple will probably go (iPod touch/iPad like design) and this design looks nothing like that.

Steve also said 10 inches was the minimal screen size for a tablet.
Steve also said no one would want to watch video on their iPod
Steve also said no one would store music on their phones
Steve also didnt want the iPod to be PC-Compatible
Steve also thought that web apps for the iPhone would be a "sweet solution"

The list goes on and on. There ist always a right solution for a certain time. But time changes. They might have made the iPhone Classic screen bigger if it were possible at that time without vastly increasing the thickness of the phone and decreasing the battery life. But at that time 3.5" were the best solution.

Times change and requirements change but the average size of the human thumb hasn't changed.

These "news" of renderings are starting to get old.

lmao this is a RUMOR site. it's MacRUMORS. you don't mind them reporting on things that may or may not be legit, but you mind that they show renders of a RUMORed phone? I don't get it. Arn never claimed that these renderings are "news". they're just articles....

Got it.

looks like a smaller iPad mini to me... just like the iPad Air is a larger mini...

Apple is going to make all the devices look like smaller/bigger versions of each other.

In the renderings, the 4.7" really doesn't look much bigger than the 4". The 5.5" looks huge though.

Yep. In those renderings the 4.7" is very very nice ....
But the price is a no-go for me: if they are going to raise the unsubsidized price by 100$ I'll jump ship ...

If this really is what Apple has in store I'm not buying. Personally I hope they keep the 4'' option in an high end model and introduce larger sizes for people that prefer that. Can't wait :)

A 4.7 inch screen really shouldn't make the phone much bigger, if Apple is just smart (which they use to be ).

Another $100.... Like its not expensive enough allready...

Yes. This scary me.
I hope they are just speaking about the subsidized price on contract.
I paid 729€ for my 5s (it is 1000$ !!!!) and I'm not going to pay more than that

Oh yeah, I have no idea ... probably a crystal ball :D I was commenting on his rendering from a pure design standpoint - interesting to see the basic iPhone design language slightly shifted to minimize the top portion.

Is it really that hard to understand though? With my Note 2 I can read at length very comfortably with the phone basically in my lap while people sit around me squinting at their iPhones. Web surfing is much more pleasurable and navigating desktop sites doesn't necessarily become a complete scroll and pinch-fest. Showing photos to others or watching Youtube videos or streams is a complete different world than on a 4" screen.

And all this on a device that I can slide easily into the breast pocket on my jacket and bring along all the time. It doesn't even matter that I can't keep it comfortably in my jeans pockets, it's still an incredibly portable device compared to any proper tablet which means that 99% of the time I don't even need to bring one of those along.

Granted you may not like or need the format. And I certainly hope for their own sake that Apple keep their 4" iPhone line as long as so many of their customers prefer that. But is it really difficult to understand that the larger format can be incredibly useful to others?

I guess they just ignored the leaked front panel?

A 4.7 inch screen really shouldn't make the phone much bigger, if Apple is just smart (which they use to be ).

I like it, but doubt Apple would go with an asymmetrical front panel. I'm fine with it, but I know many around here aren't.
I'd like to see that same mock up with a 4.5" screen in the same chassis as the 4" and compare them.

I will not buy a 4.7'' phone. I am very sad about it but the only choice for me would be to find the 3.5'' Android phone once my 4s dies. Phone greater than 3.5'' is simply non ergonomic!

3.5" android phones are just crap ... You can find a decent 4.3" I think , the sony z1 compact.
In android world small screen equals to ridiculous devices

----------

hate the power button on the side of my nexus 5. every time you use the volume keys, you hit the power button. leave it on the top

The power button is not on the same side of volume keys, I think.
On a taller device, the power button on top is a wrong choice IMO

Oh look another iphone.. Looks like the old iphone only bigger! Time to move on Apple! It's getting repetitive now.

What do you expect, an oval ? Or a cylindrical phone ?
This rendering has very few point in common with the current iPhone design

Very true. The middle version even looks better, more up to date. I'd feel it really was a shame if Apple stuck to the same bezel proportions as their phones go big. That would make them unnecessarily big - and probably put many customers off who otherwise wouldn't have had a problem with the size increase.

Here's another example of how differently design can be handled in regards to bezel size. These two phones have the exact same screen size!

If Steve got on stage today and said the 3.5" screen was the perfect size, people would laugh in his face. 3.5" was the perfect size in 2007, not in 2014. All of your complaining is for nothing, we all know you will go and get a 4.7"(or bigger) phone, like it, learn to love it, and then go and find something else to whine about. Can we just jump to the last part? Do a lot of apple users wear skinny jeans? I have put a galaxy note in my pocked with no issues. I wear dockers, you don't need a fanny pack or man purse to carry something even that size.

Apple should have been the first to market with a bigger screen phone, not because it's innovative, it's not; it just makes sense. All of you people who are crying about a phone being to big need to go have a pity party with the people who are upset that the chick wheel iPod will go away one day. Adapt or die is equally important to companies and it is to a species.

Congratulations, now you're the one whining and complaining. Steve had a logical reason behind saying 3.5" was the perfect size...and your argument is "bigger just makes sense"? You really make an impressive case. :roll eyes:

Big phones are goofy looking, clumsy and the opposite of practical. I've always snickered at those ridiculous Android phablets and I'm certainly disappointed Apple seems to be going that route. Will I buy the 6 anyway? Yep, I'll be there day one for the smaller of the two...and you're right, I'm sure I'll learn to love it. However, from a practicality standpoint, 3.5" was perfect.
