Poor voice quality. GPS systems with much more depth are not that expensive anymore. Not in my room.

Stop spreading FUD, there`s nothing wrong with the voice quality of the iPhone. If you`ve got a problem then it`s either with your provider or where you are trying to make a call from.

GPS with more depth, what are you whittering on about? If you mean features you are just nit picking as the iPhone does just about as well as any other `phone` in the GPS dept, with the exception of turn by turn which you should know well by now will be fixed shortly.

Gee, when will people get something real to whine about in this forum?

camera on the nano undermines this rumour. if it's not meant to be camera on the iphone nano.

:apple: really has to diversify...only have one 3.5" is not enough. in europe and asia we are used to smaller cell phones. apple should be able to make a 3" iphone nano usable - especially for people with small fingers - like myself.

Personally, I'm in the same boat. However, I can understand why many people would want to carry one gizmo instead of two-- and why others would prefer the alternative. In any case, it makes perfect sense that Apple would offer an iPod Touch both with and without a phone option (which is essentially what they are doing). The iPod is what is at the heart of Apple's consumer strategy-- the phone is just an add-on capability to cover the market. Think of it this way-- just as Microsoft's goal was once to "own the desktop", Apple's goal is to "own the pocket."

Thats a really good way to put it.
I dont have a problem have 2 devices on me, as long as they both EXCEL at what it is that they are setting out to do. I would rather have an exceptional phone and an exceptional media player rather than a mediocre all in one device.

I was IN LOVE with my iPhone's iPod component, but the voice quality and 3g signal strength irked the hell out of me. I returned it within the 30 day period because I am hoping that the new iPhone this summer fixes these issues. If not, I'll get an iPod Touch and use my upgrade elsewhere.

I will be so annoyed if the touch gets a camera... lol.

Although, then, those iPod's would FLY off the shelves.

Are we buying the iPhone just because it has a camera or are there more important reasons to own one?

The camera isn't what makes the iPod or iPhone. It's nice to have on either, but if I want to take good pictures, I'll use a good camera. If I want to take great or professional pictures, I'll have invested in some lenses and a really great camera. Apple's iPhone and iPod camera will (for me) always be for those spontaneous or quick shots.

Wow.
One: I PERSONALLY don't like the voice quality for MY area. Read my other posts.

Two: Like a GPS for your CAR. You know, one that can actually SPEAK to you. (Yes, I am aware this should be coming with 3.0)

Three: If the new iPhone this summer has better voice quality for ME, with some better features that tailor to MY needs, I'll get it.

Here's what you do. Go to millenicom.com and get yourself a 3G USB
modem and their monthly data plan at $59.95 a month with no data caps, no taxes, no contract, and no cancellation fee. Then get a portable router and use your Touch and all of your other wireless devices on that for one monthly price. No I don't work for Millenicom and haven't done this yet but I'm thinking seriously about it. Put the 3G modem/router in the car, let the kids surf the net, and let my Touch work on 3G from anywhere.

...or from anywhere near your car. So rather than carry one device when I go out anywhere, I have to have my iPod Touch*, my mobile router and my vanilla mobile phone (which I'm also either paying a contract for or PAYG for my usage)? How convenient.

Convergence = a good thing, that I don't mind paying a bit for, especially after years of carrying around a PDA and a mobile.

OK, I accept that my O2 contract is better value than your AT&T one at £35/month for unlimited data + 600 mins talk time, but come on now.

*see everyone, it is possible to type it in full without wearing out your keyboard or fingers.

I was really hoping for some kind of design refresh, I understand why they are not doing one but still, I'm tired of the look of my 3g already. LOL Design is kind of a big deal to me. Oh well I am still hoping for a front facing camera but I'm not holding my breath.

In my opinion the Touch needs at least a mic, now that more and more apps are using it. And a camera would be good, but not as important ATM, but it might be by the time the next generation is out.

People keep mentioning the dock connector and OS 3.0. Just any old dev can't make something that works with the dock connector. In order to use it the device HAS TO go through the "Made For iPod" program and the app is tied to that device. So a generic gamepad won't work (under the current rules) because the pad needs to (a) be "Made For iPod" and (b) have a specific app tied to it. I don't know if Verizon would go through the trouble of the investment in putting together an iPod Touch dock connector device to allow 3G data on the iPod. And since it would have to work WITH AN APP, once you quit that app you lose the connectivity, so you can't run your other network-centric apps while using the Verizon "connection" app. Worthless. I know a lot of people are excited about dock connector being open, but it's not as open as people think.

You are correct but what i suspect will happen is for instance on a game pad. A hardware developer will create a game pad and develop the correct api's for developers to use this piece of hardware with their app. To me its just like releasing drivers for the iphone specific hardware. The dev will write it and instruct other app devs on how to implement it into their apps.

I mean, seriously, should I even get the new iPhone. It seems like the Touch is going to have everything the iPhone has. Come on Apple, don't make the two of them too similar. It seems like the only thing thats going to separate them is the phone. Well, I guess I may as well gone ahead and get my Blackberry Bold and one of the new Touch in September.

Ive said that since the 1st post. Watch out. People don't take kindly to someone thinking from a big business stand point for once. But wait! Its also from a consumer stand point! Do you really want people asking you if your iPhone is an iPod Touch? They hypotheticaly will look the same and do the same things. <sarc> I mean sure, I'd want to save my money, get an iPhone, and have it be mistaken for the red-headed step child. </sarc>

You can just use the Apple buds with mic and remote, I'd rather see a camera as that is harder to add to an existing device.

If Project Charlie has come in through to Best Buy, and it's iPhones (probably the first they heard about it) - has anything come through the inventory system for O2?
Anyone got contacts in O2 stores to check it out?

Well if you are worried that someone will call your iPhone and iPod touch, the camera doesn't make a huge difference. The basic form factor of the two make them look enough alike to have people make the mistake. And its also more likely that someone calls my iPod touch and iPhone than the other way around.

The big separation point is and always has been the phone part. I'm pretty sure Apple's big business stand is doing just fine considering the 20% marketshare the iPhone captured and the millions of iPod touch units. Something tells me they know what they are doing.

I'll make this plain and simple:

The iPhone in its current shape ist just too FAT.

Sure, the awesomeness of the iPod touch is not to be reached within the next five years, but at least a make it a little bit thinner.

I think its fine the way it is. I'd let it be even bigger if it meant better hardware or battery life.
Unless of course you were being sarcastic.

Not to the AVERAGE consumer. You and I know, sure, but Joe Somebody won't know the difference.

And yes, I have faith that Apple knows what it's doing. I'm just giving a different perspective. After all people, this is still just a RUMOR.

Actually, while being a non-standard word, and a double-negative of sorts, it simply means "not without regard" or anyways or in spite of. Besides, horrible words like ain't and creatures of ebonics :( seeped into vernacular despite the watchful eye of grammar-mongers like yourself.

P.S. I tend to agree with you and do not approve the use of stupid words.

Let's elevate the English language to the level it used to be. We've dropped who knows how many levels since Edwardian times.

Maybe you guys should start a new thread on the english language and stay in topic here.

If the design of the iPhone will remain the same, please please PLEASE give us a carbon fiber back! Then all the antennas back there will be happy as well.

I would bet that the next iPhone will be released around late June or so, and then the iPod touch will be released around September...this is how they have done it in previously, so it would make sense.

Most importantly, I'm really hoping that they jump to a maximum of 64GB internal storage on the iPhone (instead of the "next step" of 32GB per chip), as it has been such a long time since they've introduced any storage increases...so by now, they should be able to skip a "step" and go straight from 16GB to 64GB per chip. Plus, that would mean a 128GB iPod touch! Pure awesomeness. [Heck, maybe that would lead the iPod Classic to be re-released in a solid state version??]

Now, remember those rumors about 3.2 MP and 5 MP cameras?

How about the iPhone gets the 5 MP and the iPod Touches get the 3.2 (now in June or maybe later in September)?

Screw those Chinese rumors a few days ago and at the moment I don't think that the nano really needs a camera.

Now this same theory was mentioned in the thread when the rumors about 3.2/5 MP had arose. I am with you on this theory. I believe the 3.2 will go into the touch and the 5 will go in the iphone.

Since we're only one year into our iPhone 3Gs, there's probably very little motivation for me to try to do an early upgrade.

Digital compass? Eh, fun but not earth-shattering.

FM radio/transmitter? Would be nice, but there are many apps that stream FM stations, or just other media in general, and as for the transmitter, I've got Bluetooth with A2DP, so it's working out well even in the car with my Motorola T505.

Higher megapixel camera? Nice, but again, is it worth the early upgrade costs and efforts?

More capacity? 32GB is nice, but I have a hard time filling up 16GB as it is, even with a bunch of movies. It's also very time consuming to watch it sync up that much stuff.

More battery life? I'm speculating on this one, but I'm hearing the next-gen iPhone will retain the same shape, and I just bought a mophie Juice Air Pack, so I'll be OK still.

Video recording? If this was only in the next-gen iPhone, it's a slight possibility. I've lived without it for two years, and I've dealt with workarounds such as my own trusty digital camera.

Front-facing camera? We haven't heard anything on this front, but if there's any indication we could have videoconferencing via iChat, Skype, or some other program in the App Store, I would upgrade both me and my wife the same week.
There has been allot of speculation about the iChat being presented in the iPhone. That gripe about the lack of iChat came about when the first iphone and the 3G iphone came out, so now we have a new model on the horizon, with all of the features that customers have complained about since the 1st gen iphone.
Is it me or does anyone else find it odd that ATT is now boosting its network to 7.2 and will have it completely up and running before the launch of the next iphone.
On the current network speed a new iphone with iChat would not be able to handle the traffic and it would make the network come to a crawl, so the network is getting a good little boost.
The way i see it , is that only the new iphones will have the capabilities of full video chat, although the 1/2nd Gen iphones will be able to use the ichat program they will not be able to stream a video chat.
That being said , the network will not get bogged down as much but will get a good dose of creeping

Woah! I haven't heard many people wanting a 64GB internal storage on their iPhone. Sure, it would be great, but what would you do with all that storage? Woah.

Also, good idea for the carbon fiber backing. It would be much more scratch resistant. I wonder what that would do to the cost of production though. Also, what would that mean on the back end for the consumer?
