Most people will wait for their contracts to be up.

They're selling to ORIGINAL iPhone owners (and people without iPhones at all).

Anyone who thinks this won't be a huge hit with those 2 groups is blind or in denial.
Exactly. I didn't buy one before, but I'm definitely going to get one now.

It is an incremental improvement to be sure, but it's an improvement nonetheless. What attracts me is the 32gb, video recording, better camera, and the many improvements in the 3.0 OS.

Many people who have never owned an iphone will buy this, and many owners of the original iphone will probably also buy this. Heck, there'll probably also be a fair number of 3g owners who will buy it for the improved speed, video, and greater memory capacity.

What exactly are you disappointed about? No front-facing camera? That would have been nice, but it's hardly necessary to be an upgrade. Same form factor? Again, why does that matter so much?

I have an original iPhone and didn't upgrade to the (minimally) upgraded 3G. I don't see anything to get me to buy this one either.

I feel the same way. Features that I was really looking forward to (based on the rumors) were:

* OLED screen
* Matte case
* Black bezel / no chrome!
* Front facing camera
* 5 MP (at least) rear camera

Not even *one* of these items showed up in the iPhone GS. I've been using Cycorder for over a year now and it meets my needs just fine for video. I don't need to open my apps a couple miliseconds faster and the current battery more than gets me through the day. The extra storage is nice but nothing that's needed for me on a daily basis.

Really nothing the gets me excited in the least.

Well I think it was a lackluster update. Good news is that I won't have to fork out any additional cash to get it. I couldn't care less about the camera in my phone, (I barely ever use it), and really don't see the use of a compass. The enhanced performance would be something nice but not worth 199 or 299 for me on my opinion. Like many have said, I think it is aimed at original iPhone owners and new customers, and not necessary at those of us with 3G iphones.

Yup, I agree with mak10 on his points. This is a big upgrade for 1st gen users who didn't upgrade to 3G.

believe me, I wanted that front facing camera, but honestly what would I do with it? I think the video conferencing stuff would have gotten old really fast, and now if there's something I really want to show someone I can just record it with the new video camera and upload it to YouTube and they can watch it there.

I am a little disappointed that, that matte black back didn't turn out to be true, I'll just have to buy a case for the new one, oh well.

No, people are disappointed when they don't get what they want.

True. From reading posts it sounds like a lot of people would've preferred a whole new redesign of the phone with no real performance upgrades rather than the incremental upgrades of internal hardware. I think the GS will be a great phone and will certainly lure fence-sitters with the low $99 price point for the 3G or $199 for 16GB as opposed to the Pre's 8GB and current 18 apps.

Apple have made no real strides for the hardware of their phones. They're playing catch-up when instead they should be looking to lead.

Agree.

I had the 2g and 3g, both of the screens shattered so I said eff apple and bought a Blackberry Bold. WHICH I ABSOLUTELY LOVE. I was actually going to wait in line and switch back to the iPhone if the rumors were true. Now I'm sticking with my berry.

Since you are JBing then you should appreciate the faster processor and more RAM for running backgrounder. I know I will.

watch the guided tour and tell me its not a pretty sick upgrade...ill be getting one..

So did I miss it or is there not going to be a faster processor and more RAM? I was hoping for more RAM so that large/heavy programs don't crash all the time.

I'm holding out for...

The iphone 3G (s) V.2 (2010)

or maybe wait another year for

the Iphone 3G(s) V.2.1.0 (2011)

LAME. not worth the update. I'll stick with my jailbroke 3G. Then upgrade to 3.0 when its jailbroke and get tethering that way since ATT wont allow it.

Was looking forward to the nice looking matte black instead of another fingerprint infested plastic back again. It's an ok upgrade but dont think it's worth another $300(assuming I can get it at that price) vs my current 3g. 3.0 awesome though.

I hate bringing this up again, but I am betting that we won't see a major overhaul until the AT&T exclusivity ends. AT&T certainly didn't help their cause today. A lot of people will be switching when (if?) this ever happens and new hardware would be a good motivator.

like i said i am a 3g user and this offers nothing new for me. the faster iphone will not be that noticabley faster! probably not the normal human being! and a video and compass are not enough for me to pay 600 or 400 for a new iphone! i have a 3g and am under contract! its a waste of an upgrade for most 3g users. didn't say it wasn't for 2g users, but most people won't go ooh 32gb for 300 thats good!, because those same people would have just gotten the 3g with 16gb.

why would anyone shell out for a new phone if you have a iphone 3g.
You get the new OS for FREE
I think that is a great news.

If they gave new hardware and the new OS did not work on iphones we bought last year, people would be complaining about that.

I think the new upgrade is great. You dont need new hardware every year when what Apple has now, is better than most smart phones out there.

Its still better than the palm that just came out.
Why are people bitching when most iphone users get a FREE UPGRADE we dont have to pay $299 for?

I can't wait until exclusivity ends. ATT around here is sub-par and there's a constant echo which gets "fixed" but returns

Haha!

Well, I love it. Given that I don't already have an iPhone, this upgrade is perfect for my wife and me. The faster processing speeds, bigger capacity and everything... It's just perfect.

You guys can complain all you want, but I say well done, Apple. Thanks for bringing what you've brought.

The new iPhone is an evolution; not a revolution.

Thankfully, it's unchanged enough that I'm keeping my 3G and I'll wait until next year.

If you already said this, then why say it again? Just don't buy the new iphone and move along. Sheesh :rolleyes:
