That design looks plausible but the thing I liked about the nano was its size - great for the gym, since the shuffle is really small (in terms of memory) - that's just too big for that sort of thing.

Wait, 10.5.6 in 2-3 weeks? So what, 10.5.5 next week? But then we had 10.5.4 in July, 10.5.5 in August and 10.5.6 in September. That's quite a lot of updates and that doesn't reflect the usual cycle of "big" updates.
I sure hope it's not going to become a habit!

trust me it really isnt

Digg.com's Kevin Rose has posted a new blog entry claiming to have knowledge of upcoming iPod updates with a significant number of details:

- Revamp of entire iPod line.
- Small cosmetic changes to Touch, Nano to see significant redesign (see above)
- iPods to see fairly large price drops to distance itself from the $199 iPhone.
- iPod touch 2.1 software, iPhone to get update very soon after.
- iTunes 8.0 ("it's a big update w/new features").
- All of this coming in the next 2-3 weeks.

See Video

Rose has been the source of a number of Apple related rumors over the years with his most recent claims having some accuracy.

I don't trust this guy one minute. All he seems to be doing is taking the other rumours that are flying around on the internet and claiming them as his own, or making them up based on what seems logical. I have a webcam and a microphone! I can say things along the lines of "my sources tell me..."!

Revamp of entire iPod line... haven't we already seen on numerous sites that the iPod is, for the most part, discontinued at this point?
nano to see redesign... doesn't this happen every year essentially?
Small cosmetic changes to touch, new touch software, price drops... all seem logical to differentiate the iPod line from the iPhone line, which is necessary.
iTunes 8.0 - we've been on 7.x for quite a while, yes, it's time.
Next 2-3 weeks... How often on this site alone have I been seeing things stating iPod refreshes in September?
Interesting that he says that he is less sure about the Blu-Ray in Macs - maybe because that's the one that's pushing it.
My two cents.

well he has been correct before with iphone rumours

There displays don't have and there video chips may not have it as well.

First, HDCP is not a technical necessity, so by using superior negotiation skills Apple could get a license to play Blu-Ray without HDCP. Not too likely. There are two more possibilities: One, you don't need HDCP for an integrated monitor, like all notebooks and iMacs. Two, you can get a license to play back at reduced quality, like reduced to 1280 x 720.

Now I don't know what other ridiculous demands Hollywood will make, but if Apple builds a Mac with Blu-Ray drive, it should be no problem to add HDCP to the video card (you just replace one Silicon Image transmitter chip with a different one, and you need a little bit of software. Just make it impossible to turn off HDCP without rebooting the Mac).

hmmm he seem's pretty legit

i think they should lower the price cause they are basically the same product, IN FACT the itouch has less than the iphone, why should i have to pay more. in fact why mor just get a cheaper classic with more memory

You don't pay more for the Touch. The number on the price tag may be higher, but with the iPhone, you pay some money when you get your hands on the phone, and then about 20 dollars every month for the next 24 months.

I know, I looked him up after I wrote that. Nonetheless, he's still talking about rumours here, which isn't based on him, but on the people he knows.

Guess it means a nano with more volume, which means more GB of space for songs, video etc. But the clickwheel does seem to take up a lot of front space when you compare it with the Touch. The whole clickwheel or not comes into play. They could always mini the Touch I guess.

ugh, must i repeat myself, the screen would mostly be used vertically and when you play video, move it on it's side(like a zune) and the actuall screen itself isnt curved, but the casing is.

oh c-mon this is sooo sometthing apple would comeup with,

when ever ya'll dont like something apple it's "that looks like something microsoft would come up with or dell or hp"

Ha! You are the one suggesting it would be OK to use it "like a Zune," so don't get on our case if any of us think it's a solution that M$, etc would come up with. In fact if you use it "like a Zune," then Apple didn't come up with the idea. And not b/c they don't have any but because it's an inelegant solution when the controls are not in the same position as the viewer. The Touch and iPhone work b/c the controls conform to whichever side the viewer is watching. A hard clickwheel nano cannot.

I understand only the casing is curved, but that includes the glass. Have you ever looked at video through curved glass? And if the video doesn't reach to the curved portion that is a waste of space and poor engineering. Form over function at its worst.

iTunes Home

What big features does iTunes need?

The big thing i wish, but prob will not happen is a home server itunes.

I always wanted a Sonos, but couldnt justify the cost, but now have the Apple remote iphone app, and control my AppleTV, and airport express. All my music, tv and movies comes off an old mac mini without screen locked up in a cupboard along with my dsl router. when me or my partner wants to add music, we rip it on our laptops, then copy it up onto a shared folder on the mac mini, then use screen sharing to add the files to itunes. we can then use itunes sharing to see these files on the laptops to play them. we also have an application called simplify media installed so that when away from home we can play the mac mini music collection anywhere we have a net connection.

Apple need make this simple now they have a remote app, and people are buying lots of media from iTunes that wont fit on a laptop, we could do with a media server.

Im hoping for a new airport type device with a large HD, iTunes embedded with a nice web interface for both mac and iphone/ipod touch and folder watching. You can also enroll up to 5 macs/pcs to iTunes to sync up playlists so that i can always have a good collection of tunes on my macbook using smart playlists. iTunes iteself could be the gateway to the web interface like the itunes store is just a web app. from this web app, we can add albums that we have ripped on our laptops, setup playlists, and setup all the syncing to devices such as the AppleTV. Also a backtomyitunes type thing should be done. like simplfy media i could see all my media in itunes while on the road. this could come up still as a shared collection in iTunes. Shared needs improving though because its not split into music, tv, movies, its opne big list!
Although i too think iTunes is getting bloated and not really a tunes application, i would like the server based version to have built in basic iphoto so i can have a master home store for our family photos, and then they will show on the AppleTV and again like with other media, we can sync up certain photo albums to our laptops small hard drives.
Perhaps with the server version of iTunes becoming a bit more capable than the current desktop iTunes, the desktop iTunes could be slimmed down a bit?

Also i want iTunes to support UK radio such as the BBC streams. I know its mostly the BBCs fault for not offering a standard mp3/aac stream, but i wish Apple would work with them and get live streaming and listen again built into itunes and then add support to the AppleTV/Remote app. That would be very cool

my point was that i doubt that HE might of fabricated this

And "high ranking Democratic officials" yesterday were hinting Chet Edwards was going to be Obama's VP pick too.

you see i knew i would regret the zune analogy, im just giving you an example, geez microsoft can come up with a good idea every once in a while. in fact it's an ingenious solution, but lets just wait till it comes out and i'll rubb it in with all cap during the annoucement

i'm just saying i dont think this guy is fabricating this, i think he's telling the truth....as he knows it ,at least

omg what with the MS hate, it's just a company, and it's not AS terrible as people make it out to be, the zune is just as good as any ipod. the only reason Im not getting one is because the ipod LOOKS cooler.

Now im a apple fan like everyone else, but i just dont get why some of ya'll have passionate hate for microsoft, like there some evil coporation built on world domination.

Here is my expectations :

1) Speed Bump for Mac Mini & Mac Pro

As almost everybody in the Geek Community, we're all expected a speed bump from Apple for mid-September.

We can easily expected to see:
- New CPUs speed,
- BlueRay Drive
- Larger size HDs
- probably the new QT chip we saw lately on news, for realtime HD Movie Encoder/Decoder (mostly for BlueRay).

The Mac mini hasn't been updated for a while now and the Mac Pro needs the Blue Ray drive to stay in the race of the Top of the Top desktop computer.

2) New iMac, MacBook, MacBook Air and iPod

We could also expect changes for the current product with maybe:

- a 30" iMac (using the new screen plateform from the future Apple Cinema Displays they will release end of the year)
- a new 13" MacBook version (with Aluminum case and multi-touch trackpad)
- a new MacBook Air with faster CPU and larger SSD
- a new iPod (which will use the same plateform as the iPod Touch, but with 80 Gb and 160 Gb drive) and a new iPod Nano to support the rent movie (and why not the future iTunes Unlimited feature)

Of course, we could also expect a speed-bump on all model, but we know that Apple will release the news step by step.

3) My most wanted one: iMAID (Multimedia Apple Internet Device... LOL, I'm just kidding for the name)

With the success of the iPhone and proof the ability of Apple to reduce the size of a portable computer and the flexibility of OS X for portable device,
we can easily suspect to see a new kind of device, such a mix of Sub MacBook, Mac UMPC, Mac MID, Tablet MAC and MAC PSP.
This device could have all the successful features from the iPhone, plus some new innovation.

[As explain by Marx55 with this link : http://www.ilounge.com/gallery/iphone_concept/iphonePro2.jpg ]

Except the device would have:

- a 5 to 6 or 7" multi-touch wide screen,
- have the dimension of a pocket book, almost like a PSP to fit in the pocket or purse,
- EGDE, 3G, Bluetooth, Wifi connection for Networking,
- iSight for Mobile iChat, Skype call, etc...
- GPS for Car Navigation, Travel information, or Localisation Application
- Accelerometer
- Evolved on-screen keyboard
- GPU and QT chips for high quality gaming and video compression/decompression
- 4 direction buttons, 4 actions buttons, two alternative back buttons and a joystick (such the PSP)
- a 16Gb Slate disk
- a full OS X (with iCal, Mail, Safari, iTunes, iChat, Finder, iPhoto, iMovie, iWeb, iWork, probably few games and even probably some new apps for Mobile, Tablet and Game)

- no drive (such the MacBook Air)
- "on the air" Apps downloading from iTunes

- A price tag between $599 and $799. It could be expensive for a game station (to compare to Sony PSP or Nintendo DS), but it's not so much for a small tablet, sub-notebook, psp, Multimedia Internet Device, etc... We saw lately for the CES, a lot of new coming small form factor device... there's definitely a market for this kind of devices, mostly with we merge with the game market)

After the music, movie, tv show, family stuff (such photo, movie, web) and productive domain (exchange, office, ...), the way to go is the Game Market... it's a really huge market mostly when you see the success of the last game stations (xbox360, PS3, Wii, PSP and DS together!!)

Having multiple device with a common plateform to develop game, will help to have the same game released for: iPhone, Mobile Tablet, Notebook/Desktop or AppleTV (MacMini / AppleGame?).

Also, by having an iTunes Distribution Model, the developers will be assured against piracy. The numbers with the Apps Store proved there's a real market.

By looking the file size for (HD) movie, we can imagine than Apple will go for a complete software electronic distribution with iTunes (even for Desktop Apps). It will be faster, easier and even greener (which avoid paper, box, shipping, gas for transportation) and better security.

4) New AppleTV Hardware with DVR and Game features

The version 2.0 AppleTV is definately interesting. But there's still a missing against some other competitro (I mean Windows Media enter on Xbox360 and/or TiVO, the new coming Netflix box or even the PS3)
The AppleTV needs few features to come against its competitors:

- Video In connector (to plug the cable, satelite, etc...)
- more USB connector to connect external iSight, gamepad, other device
- DVR features to record shows from external source such cable, TV satelite .... or from iTunes (Streaming) directly
- BlueRay Drive
- GPU and QT chips for high quality gaming and video compression/decompression
- DVD import feature (to rip into iTunes your DVDs)
- 2 Wireless GamePad with the same kind of control as the iPMCD (to easily develop the game and be able to finish a game in your mobile device when you start it at home on your TV :))
- Some "Familly" application such: iChat, iCal, Mail and Safari ... to be able to sit down on your sofa and talk with your friend and familly with the external iSight, or even check your email, or chat with your friends during your network game...

5) A new improvement of MobileMe with full integration with new apps for Leopard (such iWeb '09).

The idea of Mobile is great... but in fact, it does not work so well.
The push isn't really a push right now, it doesn't sync correctly, the homepage from .Mac doesn't exist anymore,
we don't have access to the bookmark from the web interface, etc...

So, my guess is: They will release a new version with:
- Real Push this time
- New version of iWeb '09 for a complete integration of the web creation with the new "HomePage" feature
- Support of Php and MySQL for the creation of more evolved website
- Integration of Wordpress directly in iWeb '09 and MobileMe (with a new Tab menu for the WebPage Creation directly from Web interface)
- A better Privacy Tools (to set different kind of level and access to your data (from gallery, shared contact, shared Calendar, shared files, etc...)
- A better iDisk Managing (with a tools to create Pages for different kind of Files Sharing: Public, Friends, Family, Work, etc...)
- Possibility to share some Calendar (mark the privacy degree for each task)
- Possibility to share your contact with your co-worker, friends, familly... (mark the privacy degree for each contact)
- Possibility to set different kind of Picture Galleries
- A new Bookmark Tab to access to your bookmarks directly from the Web Interface
- Direct Integration with iTunes (such the current widget for your last purchase, etc...), but directly from your iTunes to your MobileMe and/or iWeb '09

Also: A new wireless small keyboard (with integrated trackpad) to be able to browse internet and email on your AppleTV (or new Mac Mini) from your sofa.

6) iTunes 8.0

New version of iTunes, written in Cocoa, using 4 different core:

- iTunes Player (for ACC, MP3, Movie, etc...)
- iTunes Store (for shopping for music, movie, apps, tv show, podcast, game, etc...)
- iTunes App Manager (for the installation of the apps/games to your different device: iPhone, iGame, iMID or even Desktop)
- iTunes Sync (for the managing of your sync for contact, cal, mail, etc...)

Of course, each core will be available for another one... as you can open your media (let's say picture) in several apps (Pages, iPhoto, iWeb, etc...). So, it could be possible to "call" your Store when you're in the Player or the App Manager...

The iTunes Player would have the DVD import (rip) to convert your favorite DVD for your iPhone, AppleTV, iGame, iMID

Nota: Of course, lot of people (as me) wait for an iPhone 3 with a dual Cam (for real 3G Video Call) or Skype and iChat video Call (over Wifi, since they will never accept over 3G :( ), and larger size (16 is way not enough if you have to carry on lot of video podcast, music, TV show, etc... as I do.
But we know it's pure uptopia and we will need to wait at least 1 year to see this...

Of course, it's pure speculation. I don't have any Apple contact and everything noted here are just some guess..... and Personal Wish ;)

It might look stupid for some of you... but as explained, it's wish... not pure and exact science...

Sorry for this long post (with non proper english :) )

Thanks,
Spid

You're being generous.

Blu-ray and and a cheaper iPod Touch would make me a very happy man. And cost me money no doubt!

I'd also like to see new displays (with HDMI ports and HDCP) a mid-range tower and/or a Mac Mini / AppleTV hybrid (both machine's features in one box).
